CORRECTION Mike; That was NOT Tamales “with shredded pork inside.” It is actually a dish called “Pasteles,” and you can get it with pork or chicken inside. It’s also made with green bananas or yuca. It has no corn base whatsoever. It’s also great with Hot sauce 😁 I’m glad you enjoyed the food in Puerto Rico, and I encourage you to try a pastel the way it should be eaten and appreciated. It’s quite good. Thank you for visiting PR, and sharing the experience. I was wondering when you might possibly come to Puerto Rico, and you made my day, by watching this video 😍

Mike, those are pasteles, not tamales! For others who are confused, no, these are not “cakes”; pastel(s) in Puerto Rico refer to what you called tamales. The word for “cake” in Puerto Rico is “bizcocho.”

I really respect that you really try it out before giving us a heads up, it’s always a hassle when traveling and bringing all of my vitamins, that formula and solution makes it so easy! So happy to you enjoy our food and happy to see my little island pulling its weight in the world of food, like we have been for a long time. I’m so homesick now, AND home hungry, I hope you get to try Alcapurrias, puertorican fried tacos and relleno de papa. All super iconic, all friggin delicious. And for the sweet options I recommend arroz dulce, and tembleque, can’t go wrong with that, but maybe those are more countryside Puerto Rico dishes now that I think about it. Oh man, I just thought of even more food, tripletas, chily (it’s actually a sandwich mostly sold from food trucks) pastelillo de chapin, coco and/or guava. Guineito en escabeche, mollejas, and my personal favorite which I seriously think is right up your alley, it’s called “Granito”it’s actually rare to find being sold on the street, but it’s white rice, shaped into like a palm sized almond, and then fried, soft white rice on the inside, golden brown on the outside. Alright that’s it!! I’m taking a little trip back home!

Next time your there try piñones, that’s sweet plantains with ground beef, it’s like a Puerto Rican lasagna, it very good. That mofongo with shrimp had me salivating, it’s been a long time since I’ve had it. Goodness gracious, also you can try buñuelos, that’s like a little donut ball with syrup, very good as a pastry. There’s many other things you can try while visiting. Keep ‘em up!!!👍👍👍👍

Mikey, you need come to Minas Gerais, Brazil one day and try the "porco à pururuca" (pururuca pig), a way of making the pig skin incredibly crunchy and delicious, after roasting the pig whole you pour boiling oil on it and the skin sizzles and become the "pururuca" Also, Minas got an amazing good local cuisine, the people is very nice and the desserts are worth it - you will want to stay for a long time :D
