PUBG's Avoidable Fall Off Explained

Ойын-сауық

When you think of PUBG in 2024,
what do you think of?
My guess is probably either one of the countless memes,
or perhaps the massive success the game has found on
mobile.
What some of you might have forgotten,
is that long before PUBG ever graced half a billion
android phones with its presence,
and long before it was on consoles,
it was a PC only game.
Originally, PUBG was released as an early access game
on Steam,
and right off the bat it was a monumental success.
It was basically H1Z1 but good.
After coming out of closed beta and into early
access on Steam, meaning anyone could play it,
the game skyrocketed in popularity
over the following months.
by november 2017, the game managed to average
over a million concurrent players,
and by January of 2018, reached a
Steam record of 3.2 million concurrent players,
which still hasn't been beaten to this day.
PUBG was on top of the world in under 12 months,
and was looking bulletproof.
But a couple of unforseen events, and one huge
corporate cock up completely reversed the game's good fortune.
Just as quickly as it picked up steam,
it lost it.
In the following 12 months,
PUBG's average player count fell by over a million,
and the player count continued to steadily decline long after
that.
But what exactly caused such a drastic fall off for such a promising game,
and how did PUBG reinvent itself to become even bigger?
Firstly, let's address the elephant in the room,
Fortnite battle royale.
They had the same formula as PUBG, but
it was destined to be more popular.
It was free, cross platform from day one, more visually appealing,
had building as a unique element, and was just more suited
to a casual audience.
To sum it up, Fortnite was PUBG
but more colourful, fast paced, and most importantly free.
Once fortnite had established a foothold
in the battle royale genre,
it almost immediately
made PUBG's offering less pallateable,
especially given PUBG's $30 price at the time.
I remember actually playing PUBG before moving to fortnite
around this time, along with countless others.
Even if you were fairly decent at FPS games
PUBG often felt unrewarding,
and the game began incentivising people to bush camp
and hide until the final circle.
I remember a majority of the times I would lose
in the top 25, were situations where I couldn't even
see the enemy, which was much less of a problem in fortnite,
although the same problem did still persist to an extent.
PUBG became frustrating, and increasingly so as more and more
casual players left the game, to play Fortnite instead.

But compared to Fortnite (PC / Console), it's got a fraction of the players - It's still a pretty big game but a majority of its players have left

Dude Fortnite is a fantasy game, more people like fantasy games, it should actually have more players than PUBG. In addition, PUBG apart from Fortnite, its players are at least far more than the rest of its competitors@@blags2

Great video but it missed the fact that PUBG is the 3rd most played game on daily basis on steam, only behind CS2 and DOTA. I at least would not classify that as "fallen off" for a 7 year old game

PUBGM is managed by Tencent so krafton only gets a piece of the cake. Krafton launches New state mobile but it’s not doing that well.

dude did you pay attention the last 7 years?. pubg was big and still is. every day it is top 5 on steam often top 3. sure it has been lower but remember the game was popular for 2 years straight. that for a shooting game that was new and faced big competition is very rare. and now it is still big. people are back streamers are back. and not even half of players went to fortnite you didnt included the first cod br and other shooters that came out. after two years often three people are going to other places. thats natural. and they had to do something about the skins because it is was there income to keep the game going and make a profit because it is a company it needs profit. you call it greed and sure there is a part that is greed look at the skins now. but people dont need to buy the skins. talking abnout greed what did your favrite game fortnite do more greed often over the back of little kids. so dont throw greed in there because if that was a reason to leave pubg that there is now selling of skins why go to fortnite then. saying that just makes you sound dumb imo

Fortnite definitely isn't my favourite game, I don't play either anymore - I completely agree, Epic Games is equally greedy. But warzone didn't come out until 2020, by which time PUBG had already lost a majority of it's players, so it's mainly down to Fortnite taking their players away. Also, Fortnite didn't have a P2P economy which they shut down, it was locked from day 1. That's where I have a real problem with PUBG's management - either have a community market, or don't, but screwing over their most invested players overnight it a dumb move from them.

I think your problem is the lobbies. Esp if you play in NA. PUBG is doing really well here in SEA. I play every single day. Also, people who are still playing in NA are probably grinders or new players. So if you play it now and don't grind, you probably won't have as much fun and would be going back to lobby a lot. They are trying to balance the SMG's for casual players like yourself to also have a chance to survive. I feel your video is kinda unfair as you haven't played the game as much and haven't done as much research. Have you read the latest patch notes for example? It feels like me, coming on your channel to give you a review after watching say 5 random vids. Wouldn't be fair, right? I have been playing for over 4 years now and am still having fun. I still sometimes can't see the enemy, but that IS part of the game. It's when I can and take em out that makes it all worth it.

That's fair. I think the main point I'm trying to get across is that Fortnite took all of the wind out of PUBG's sails, which explains why it's a lot less popular nowadays. I just personally think it's a shame that they seem to prioritise mobile players, with console/PC seeming to be an afterthought. The game still has massive potential but after playing a ton of games recently I thought it would be worth trying to put across why there aren't many new/returning players
