You really do a very thoroughly detailed explanation for people like me who aren't a certified mechanic and can understand everything you say and do. I have a quick question??. The Jouncer bumper piece in the rear. I'm replacing mine as we speak. I noticed a bolt in the middle of the sleeve/casing, not sure what it's called. Does that bolt come out and they put into the middle of the Jouncer and screwed in or can I just push the Jouncer in myself without bolting it in??

Thanks Kevin! I will still have plenty of PT content coming up, in fact when I’m done my Neoru my mom’s other PT is next, I’m doing a custom 2 tone paint job on it for her and Pteaser front end kit. I will also be installing air conditioning into it since it wasn’t factory optioned with it.

@@CarswithNash heck yea!! I started at a garage so my car is on hold but I have a paint job planned. At er now currently so I was able to watch ur video.

The lower oil line feeding the turbo is prone to clogging due to "coking of oil". Basically it is to close to the manifold and oil burn in the line and clogs it with soot. A replacement line that is routed differently is available but running synthetic oil prevents the problem and is better for the engine. That's the choice I made for my 2004 GT.

I wouldn’t even consider running conventional oil in a turbo car. Are you talking about the oil drain line? I was always under the understanding it was the feedline I had to worry about…?

@@joncooper9966 They both do but I’m pretty sure it’s a high pressure feed line that is the issue, I could be wrong however since I haven’t experienced the problem myself.

Nice work! Doesn't look too hard. Kinda strange those banjo bolts rusted so much inside. I would think the coolant would prevent that? Never seen that on a Subaru turbo bolt. Maybe a better coating? Looks like it's time for an oil change though!

The car spent most of it’s life in California and I’m wondering if maybe somebody was just running pure water in the cooling system. I already had replaced the radiator previous and it was looking a little nasty inside as well. I did change the oil right after this, not sure why it was so black actually wasn’t even due yet, but I think partly because the turbo was running hot. I’m running Castro Edge full synthetic in it.

@@CarswithNash Oooh that makes sense. Forgot this wasn't a vehicle owned for a long time by you. I knew up North you would have coolant in it! Was thinking the main culprit would be running straight water. Yeah could be excess heat blacked up the oil pretty fast. :)

When my turbo went, the manifold was cracked. I replaced both but left the lower heat shield off on purpose.

Yeah, you really should replace both, but I had this used turbo that I salvaged off a parts car I had.

Great job working in such a small area at the back of the engine. Looking at how tight everything is, would it have help to remove the intake manifold? It doesn't take but about 10 minutes to move it out of the way.

Matt, we just had our engine rebuilt and turbo replaced, but apparently, we are missing that turbo heat shield at 5:19 in your video. Do you know a part number for that bit? Or, any idea where we could buy one?

Can I put a turbo in my pt 2.4 cruiser.

My pt cruisers turbo has a leak and it’s gotten to the point where my motor mounts and multiple other parts have gotten hit hard from the leaks. It’ll cost me 5000 for all the parts but I’m broke. I’m still driving but how long will It last?

What do you mean hit hard by the leaks?

What could be the problem after rebuilding my turbo from caked up lines and it's still burning alot of oil and smoking alot

You were too late on the turbo rebuild and it already took out the engine… (probably, a proper diagnosis from a hands on mechanic is still best, compression test)

Can anyone tell me what would happen if I had a turbo going bad and then it went bad and then I drove another 1,000 miles in the freeway? I'm thinking of picking up a car with a sketchy turbo and fixing it when I get home.

Depends how the turbo went bad, did it blow up or did it just stop giving boost? If metal came off the turbo and went down the line, it could’ve got stopped in the intercooler, so the engine could still be good. Often though the turbos can fail without any carnage and everything might be just fine. Consider changing the intercooler and at least check it for debris.

@@CarswithNash right now it's just making noise. The car has less than 50k miles (although it's a 2003) if that helps. Will foreign material result in other system failing catastrophically, or for that matter, a stopped wheel? I'm wondering about the cat or lube or other systems. What is typical mode of failure on these units? I would assume stall out but really have not worked on turbos myself before.

@@CarswithNash by the way, this has not happened yet; I am considering buying a PT GT out of state with a turbo in questionable condition. I'm a roll the dice kind of guy but I don't want to go overboard and run something that is only partially failed until it's completely failed.

My 2004 gt is pushing oil through to the turbo its breaking my heart and my pockets aren't there yet to fix it any tips ?

Sounds like you’re going to need a new turbo. Unless you just mean oil collecting in the bottom of the airbox which is actually totally normal for these cars.

You mean on a naturally aspirated PT engine? It's been done, but they won't handle as much boost as a turbo engine, so it's not really worth it in my opinion. It would basically be a good recipe for blowing head gaskets.

N/A pts are higher compression. The turbo short block uses different pistons and is non- interference. Lots of problems with detonation and tuning.

Hey from downunder 🦘 Have oil question about my 06 PT. Factory recomends 5W-30. Is 10W-40 better for high mileage engines? Mine has 120,000miles. Learnt heaps good tips from your vids. Cheers.

I always run 5w30, I think that is best because with tighter tolerances on modern engines you have to be careful not to get too thick or you can starve parts of the engine for oil. I have never actually heard of one of these engines failing in a way that could’ve been caused by lubrication or lack there of, they are pretty sturdy in that regard.

I have a question about my 03 PT gt. I'm doing away with the getrag transmission and going with a n/a manual transmission, will the input and output speed sensors work with the ECU for the boost solenoid or will I have to delete the solenoids and run a manual boost controller

Sorry you're talking to the wrong person. I'm pretty good at fixing and maintaining these cars but I'm not that familiar with modifying them. You'd probably find more help and information in the Neon SRT-4 community.

Update on the transmission swap. I ended up having to use the n/a flexplate and starter and got it put in last night. Everything works fine just got to bleed the clutch now
