PT Cruiser Electrical System Maintenance

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you're tired of electrical issues and glitches with your PT Cruiser you need to watch this video! I show you step by step how to restore the performance of your PT Cruiser's electrical system and prevent future electrical problems. This process is free and easy for anyone to do at home. Although I did this on a turbo PT Cruiser the process is identical on the none turbo models and should also apply directly to all years of PT Cruisers. The information in this video could actually be applied to pretty much any vehicle.

Thank you making these videos Matt. I have a 2008 PT Cruiser Base Manual 5 speed Non Turbo and I decided to replace everything that I can a little at a time. I have had an issue with my headlights doing a single flicker every now and then. I am trying to track that down. First thought maybe it was due to when the fan kicked on but after watching this video I am going to check the ground. It is too cold to do all of my grounds right now but I will definitely do the headlight ground and then the rest of them in spring.

Thanks, Matt. I realise that this only started after I parked the car in a damp area for several months - it had stuff growing on it, but it was still ok - then I had it resprayed because a pile of rocks fell of a truck in front of me, and they had to basically strip the car. Ever since then, I've had static on the radio, and the worse it is, the more often the tailgate unlocks, so I'll follow your procedure, hope for the best, and let you know the outcome.

I never had issues with my $500 PT Cruiser GT 5-speed until I got a Diablo Sport Tuner and upped the boost from 9psi to 17psi then brought it to the drag track and it had really bad wheel-hop/shake from spinning on the very sticky prepped surface (ran a 14.1 at 101mph). After that it must have shook all the ground wires loose because the fog lights, head lights, gas gauge, and fuel pump stopped working all within the last 3 years and I fix all of them by adding a ground wire to each part that failed. The last thing to stop working is the cruise-control and I think it's probably also a bad ground. This video is very helpful to find the factory ground locations, thanks.

Dude you're a legend. I need to do some of this when it warms up next week, and likely do the ignition switch as well. Last night driving home all the dash lights flickered, then all came on, all guages dropped, complete loss of power steering and acceleration. Car was dead. Threw it in park, turned the key off, back on and was fine. Scary as hell as I had just got off the freeway.

Great video, and good work. Lots of good information here. One thing I would also do, is clean the threads AND threaded holes with WD-40 first, wipe the threads clean, and also spray WD-40 into the places where wires are crimped into the eyelets, wipe off the excess WD-40, then coat everything with dielectric grease, and reassemble. If you're *really* paranoid and want additional assurance of no grounding issues, then add electrical flux and solder the wires to the electrical eyelets where they are crimped, clean the parts with WD-40 as previously mentioned, THEN cover with dielectric grease, and reassemble.

Every fuse/ component I checked tested good. I was perplexed Car only had 42K miles. Then I found this on the internet from a Chrysler mechanic, that I probably would never have discovered, which solved the problem and would probably be a good item to add to grounding preventative Maint (before it becomes a problem) Here is the Solution I found.... "I'm a mechanic in ny ,have just dealt with pt radio/horn problem ,it's nothing to do with any parts or wiring harness issues,it's a riveted connection between dash bracket and steering column support if you jump with a wire between brkt and support with key on your radio will light up,jump a 12ga stranded wire between the fwd support stud and rearward support bracket half's(stud towards rear of car is fully insulated from brkt),i,m going to try to attach pix, this will fix solve the mystery" Good Video. I need help! I bought a 2007 PT Turbo. It's been out of service more than I've had a chance to drive it. I only bought it March 2022. It first started by not wanting to accelerate after every stop. Didn't matter how much gas pedal you gave it. Figured out after I'd shut car off it didn't have a problem for the rest of the day. Eventually shutting it off didn't work any longer. It eventually threw out a check engine light showing MAP, TPS & Crankshaft sensor. I changed one sensor at a time, eventually replacing all 3 sensors. Still had problems. At one point (only once) when I drove it home & idled in my driveway it sounded like a race car with popping noises upon giving it a little gas. That sound was a one time deal. Check engine light still shows TPS & MAP (no Crankshaft sensor though). Eventually it had a VERY bad idle each morning. Like it wanted to stall, smelled like raw gas. Once it worked is way out it idled & drove fine (for the most part). I've even replaced the computer (yes, it was flashed). New computer brought on a new problem. The car ran after computer. I THINK this is when it had the rough idle in the morning. I changed out plugs, wires, new O2 sensor. Now car doesn't want to accelerate.

sorry I missed your comment earlier... Sounds like just corrosion buildup in the cable, it can work up right under the casing and even though it's a solid wire still the corrosion creates too much resistance, that's why it heats up. The new cable should fix the issue for sure, be sure to coat the ends in dielectric grease to prevent the same thing from happening again.

Matt, I am about to follow your PT Cruiser Ground MX video to try and fix my no instrument panel lights problem. Thus far I replaced the all the lamps, the electronic ignition switch, the multifunction switch, and the keyed ignition switch because it was locking up anyway, and the panel itself. Still no panel lights, no highbeam light, and no radio time/frequency display. Your thoughts and recommendations, please. I very much enjoy your videos and have gleaned much useful information already. Your soonest response will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Firstly I just use a wire brush to do this now, I buy little ones that are about the size of a toothbrush and have stainless steel bristles and that works really good and faster than the scotch pad. Sounds like you might have a computer issue, but it could be a ground issue, I would definitely clean all the grounds as the first step. I literally just did this to my $50 plow car (an '08 PT) because no matter what I still want it to run.

Hi Matt, I’ve been having a few issues with my grandmothers 2004 pt touring turbo, it will run good for a few miles, sometimes the whole day. But then it will throw a p0508 idle air control system circuit low, p0300 rand. Misfire, p0201 p0203 p0204 injector “a” circuit codes for 1, 3, and 4. There’s also codes for heater control circuit high bank one sensors 1 and 2. Does this sound like an electrical issue? I cleared the codes about 4 days ago and I currently have a returning p0032 p0038 p0508 and p0300. Trying to keep the car from being junked but at this point it may be headed that direction. Any help would be appreciated. Also, it has a new IAC valve, so it’s concerning that there’s codes pertaining to it.

That’s a lot of codes… Have you tried cleaning up the grounds and electrical connections? Does the car and run poorly when codes appear or is it still running perfect? If it is really misfiring then maybe that is throwing the codes on the other systems because of course if the engine is misfiring that kind of throws everything off. If the coil pack is original it might be worth changing and see if the misfire code goes away at least. Sorry I wish I could give you more exact advice but that is a tough one with that many codes, I don’t want to advise you wrong and have you spend a bunch of money on it pointlessly.

I do understand your frustration but any brand of car can have electrical faults at this age. I had a 10 year old Toyota that would randomly turn the highbeams on, I’d end up having to dim multiple times. If you can afford a brand new car with warranty that’s the best way to avoid having to deal with stupid car problems, but even that can backfire and I hear horror stories from new car owners too. Glad to hear you’re still going to keep it around and try to fix it.

The fuel gauge most definitely is probably the ground on the right side of the engine bay, the small 10mm one that’s kind of tucked up under the underside of the bracing there, that grounds the fuel pump and gauge. The dash lights might be a bad ignition switch and the interior lights might be a bad door switch, both pretty cheap and easy. I have an ignition switch replacement video and it fixed the dash lights on my car, they flickered.

No I can’t do that because my videos just won’t show up in the search then, I have a few videos I didn’t monetize and they got absolutely no views. I don’t like the ads either but they are necessary, I make very little as it is off the channel, by the time I pay for my editing computer, cameras and just the extra time it takes to make the video it’s nearly a break even deal as it is. I believe KZread offers an ad free service called premium if you want to pay the monthly subscription, it’s just like Netflix then I believe.

@@CarswithNash thanks for the reply, matt; you're the first content creator to give an answer, others don't or give snarky replies... other channels i follow have switched off the mid-roll ads and have no problem getting their videos seen; it's the youtube algorithm that pumps their videos, based on what a viewer watches, into the 'others watched' list of the viewer... would you want to pay over $60/month to watch ad free youtube videos...? that's what youtube (google) charges, so that's not an option for me... have you considered patreon...? or the pay button youtube has next to the like/unlike thumbs...? other youtube content creators i follow, who switch off the mid-roll ads, usually supplement their content income with merch and other ways (like patreon)... best of luck to you... i doubt i will be watching your future videos as i only needed info on my no-start 2007 pt cruiser; your video provided that... now, since i watched your video, your other ones from years ago will pop into my 'you might like this' list... after a while the algorithm will understand, no, not interested, then your videos won't be suggested...

@@carlsmith6613 I don’t like the idea of people donating to me, I feel like most my viewers would rather watch the extra ads then feel obligated to donate to me. Honestly when I started I was manually placing ads every 10 minutes on longer videos and I was getting the views and actually making more money than I am now… but KZread has changed a lot in the last few years and it’s become much much harder to make income from a channel. I will probably eventually have some merch, I’m just not big enough yet and haven’t had enough requests for it, it’s not something I want to push on people. I’ve actually been doing this channel full time for over 4 years now, I have health problems that come and go so I’m not able to work and thus I have been trying to make this my job and my income source basically by making videos about what I have always done in my shop. KZread doesn’t like that though, they like channels that are focussed on one thing, if I just did videos on PT cruisers and nothing else I’d probably do better. What I actually love doing is the custom car building, but I can’t get enough work done quick enough to post regular videos on that, so I have to make repair videos and car stories and stuff to fill the channel, as soon as you go a week without posting a video your numbers start to fall, it’s a constant battle. Anyways I always try to be straight forward to people who comment and as long as they are polite I am polite back, if somebody is rude or snarky I may be that way back to them. I’m glad to hear my video helped you out and hope you will at least scroll through my videos and see if there is anything else that interests you because I have a whole lot more on the channel then just repair videos. Either way I do appreciate the feedback and maybe if the channel gets a bit bigger I may switch up the way the ads are placed, but for now my numbers are going up so I am going to keep things as they are.

@@CarswithNash hello, matt... thank you for the reply... sorry to hear you are experiencing health issues; never a good thing--hope you get better... i will guess you have done research on youtube and had to read their long policy about video posting, but just doing a perusing search about youtube policy on mutli-topic video content on a channel, i found: "There is absolutely no KZread rule against uploading different types of content on the same channel as long as your videos are meeting the Community Guidelines, so it is entirely your call." You mention you like doing custom building, and yes, camera setups and editing would be massive but if it's what you like to do, i say go for it... here's a link to a channel i follow whose videos are over 20 minutes with no mid-roll ads: kzread.info (i joined her patreon site at $5/month which gets subscribers certain perks depending on the tier one signs up for...) quinn (blondihacks) has been doing videos for a long time; they are great to watch even if one is not a machinist or metal lathe enthusiast... again, best of luck to you on your journey in 'video content land'...

@@carlsmith6613 You have to understand that is not a fair comparison, females have no troubles getting views and building channels quickly and just like my previous remarks you are not going to find that in the KZread policy but it just is the way it is, same as I’m saying that a channel with multiple topics doesn’t do as well, that is not in their policy, it’s just how it is, that is how the algorithm works. You seem to misunderstand what I was trying to say and clearly you never scrolled down my videos or you would notice that I have already done a lot of custom car building videos, that was my point is I can’t make enough of those videos to make a channel solely on that. As for the ads of course that matters to KZread because KZread is an income generating platform and if I’m making less off my ads than they also are making less money and so they are not going to promote my videos as much as another creators who are making them more money… Also that channel is already well established, once you get big it’s easy to grow and get your video seen. When I make PT cruiser videos they rank up very high in the search because KZread knows I am the channel to go to for PT content. Just check out this video here, I installed a Ford V8 into a Mercedes, The entire swap is covered in this one concise video, hundreds of hours of work, only 236 views two months later! Check it out it’s a good video: I Swapped a Ford V8 into my Mercedes Coupe! kzread.info/dash/bejne/moNnrtKLha64c9Y.html
