5:55 a divining rod is something they used to use for dowsing to try and find sources of water underground. Some people probably still use them but it's a pseudoscience that we did away with when we learned how to actually find water.

The thing is, seeing isn't always believing. Mentalists are stage magicians who specialise in providing the illusion of having psychic powers and they can do absolutely anything that a supposed "psychic" can do except they are honest enough to admit that it's a trick.

If psychic powers were a real thing there wouldn't be any debate on the matter at this point. Police would employ them. Security would employ them. The military would recruit them. You'd probably have known one or two personally. Most importantly, they'd be _effective_ and not just relegated to dubious call-in TV shows, hotlines, or niche businesses.

If you had psychic abilities you wouldn't need to go on tv and tell everyone. Because you could make a lot more money without people knowing you were psychic than you could make on tv appearances or being a fortune teller. So that being said, the only reason people would do that, if not for money, would be for attention.
