Einhander, Philosoma, Mechwarrior... All the 90s futuristic games point to a dark future

Philosoma deserved more respect than it got back in it's time because we all took it for granted, now after some 20 years it gets it's recognition for being one of the first PS1/X shoot em ups for it's time...

The use of SO MANY different views/perspectives, the unquestionably screenplay-like plot and presentation, The way the cut scenes lead seamlessly into the moment you regain control of the ship for the actual level...woah. I think this just may be the most ambitious shmup ever created

the japanese version (even more melodramatic voice-acting) of this was my first game for the ps1. will always be something very special to me.

my first ps1 game and one of the most memorable. loved it along with Einhander.

Wow I almost had the same experience. Einhander was incredibly tough to play. I had to use a GameShark to finally beat it lol

I like how the sequel is a total genre shift into a survival horror adventure game.

Thats a very expensive and seemingly complex carrier hangar and catapult launching sequence

The endings were different depending on difficulty level. If you beat the game on HARD mode, you get a monologue of D3 describing the mission...

The ending is really creepy when you really think about it.

And that ending is what leads directly to the events of Phase Paradox. Very appropriate in my opinion.

I've seen the ending twice which really scared the hell out of me after I beat the final boss

My favorite Shmup of all time, a shooter with a bloody horror storyline and full in-game dubbing, awesome cinematics and an not so happy end ! Loved it ! And the ship is fucking cool !

You may enjoy the R- type series then, with special note to R-Type Final. It has a homeless bleak atmosphere to the series and a heavy emphasis on futility.

Damn, I completely forgot about this game! Great shooter.

I will never forget that massive freaking swerve at the ending. I cleared this around the same time I cleared Sanvein. Good ol' times.

My #1 favorite PS1 game. Simple and fantastic. Hard to believe its nearly 30 year old.

I'm in love with this game.

I love this game, long time not play this anymore, how nostalgic.

This game is ridiculously unfair. Good playthrough! Definitely an interesting game with all those different angles of gameplay.

Too bad they never released it's PS2 sequel "Phase Paradox" in the USA.

2019 anyone? Plus: did you know that they made a sequel to this game but it isn't a space shooter, it's more like a story arc horror game, but with out the horror elements. It plays alot like resident evil and it only released in Japan.

To me phase paradox and this game feels unrelated and unnecessary for a sequel that has nothing to do with space shooters.

This Pulls You In With The Voiceovers Epic Music And Videos

I watched this exact video when it was first uploaded on KZread back in 2011. Watching it again is surreal because it's like I'm watching a nostalgic depiction of me watching a nostalgic depiction of a game from the 90s. I sometimes wonder if perhaps this is all the human race will be reduced to - watching nostalgic moments from the past as they die slowly.

I am surprised owners of Macross did not sue the developers.

I still have my disc. Too bad I don't have a working PS1. The story behind this game is pretty scary though...

It's okay. It works in my black brick Sony calls the PS2. I will probably get the ROM and emulator though, seeing as discs have a shelf life (that adhesive that holds them together does deteriorate over time)...

That last boss seems easy, but.. I remember getting to that last boss using up all my continues, all my lives, and was down to my last shield. Holy shit that was intense. Then when I beat the game for the first time, I was absolutely ecstatic. Of course the ending gave me the creeps for a while, but damn, what an experience.

Got this for Christmas after I had played it in a Fry's Electronics, enjoyed it a lot even though it was quite difficult for me. I'm very bummed to learn though that the furthest I ever got (going through that winding corridor with gates that keep closing) was only about 2/3rds through the game

This game was hard! I remember finishing this game and was all "Yea! I beat it--ooooh shiiiiit!" Waited for a 2 to come out but I guess it never happened :( Such an awesome game.

Actually there is a 2nd part but it sucks as hell, it's called Phase Paradox for PS2 and it is only in japanese.

One of the very few PS1 games I played over and over again back then. Really wished there was a toy of the Strega.

wow... I looked for this game for a long time... it was not exacly as I remember, but it's definitely it. I remember being very hard lol. well I was like 4 back then.

I beat the game once despite being a hard ass game. Some levels are also rail shooting instead of just shoot 'em up. Ground mode is just like those Valkyries in Gerwalk mode from Macross. Sucks for Lang who couldn't make it at the end. Fertilization Fertilization Fertilization

So what the fertilization thing was all about? Apparently the aliens got what they wanted, but I'm not clear as to what their goal was?..

From what I’m gathering the horror is that when the Philosoma is fertilized the ship basically becomes another carrier to spread it further. So the goal was to lure the Gallant squadron to the core and seed one of them.

It gets worse if you end the game on easy mode... Because A.L.I.C.E. is the narrator...

One of my very first PS1 games. I am wishing I kept it instead of trading it in. I need to check if this is on PSN Network.

@mgreen27 I believe it is. :D Still got my old copy though. Love the game, and always loved the soundtrack, it was awesome when I noticed he 10 years later did the critically acclaimed soundtrack for Shadow of the Colossus.

i hated when the game shifted to the back to front view, i always got hit by the asteroids cuz it was so fricking hard to see where they were going

This game was so and still is awesome for the simple fact it used so many camera angles that was the shit in shooters back in the days that you won't see anymore in today's games ( first person, third person side scroll and over head) that's what I call beast and i'm glad I still have this game to this very day and i'll bet it's worth a lot of money on the classic game circuit since it is a shooter because classic shooters are worth a lot.

I'm going to watch the entire playthrough, and see how far you get! :D This game gets kind of hard near the end, so will be exciting to see how far you get. I remember I was able to do over half the game without dying, but I still got raped near the end! xD

While this is an historic game for me on the PS1, to think, to this day, that I actually traded several Magic The Gathering Dual Lands for this game at a local hobby store......is a travesty.

Danel Lo Gris yep. Einhander took so much from this game.

I like this alot, multi perspective shooters are such a rare treat. That said, they should've used more 3d assets in it, cause while it looks fun, it also looks like a bad saturn game with the psx's 2d capabilities.

Guys, I can't find a video game that I have been looking for for more than 17 years. Please help me out. I vaguely remember some details but other details i know for sure (i'll specify on the list below) - 2d top down shoot em up. - Played it on Playstation 1 (i don't know if it was ported or was a port). - (not sure) Japanese (or japanese influenced) game. - (not sure) Sprite based. - The distinguishing feature of the game is that you have different kinds of bullets that you acquire throughout the game. You can switch between them on the fly. Every bullit kind has a powered up version except the starter bullet type. And at some point of the game (and that blew my mind at the time) you actually acquire the powered up version of the starter bullet type. - (not sure) Each boss is weak to the powered up version of each bullet type. PLEASE HELP ME FIND THIS!!!

Amazing game, still waiting for a sequel to this & Axelay & Silpheed. Keep Dreaming i know it wont happen in this shit fest industry unfortunately. Something like this on PSVR 2 would be something special.

Silpheed had the better soundtrack, but Philosoma was more innovative. Like a proto-Einhander in some ways. Edit/Note: It's weird how the player character is the only one with an alphanumeric call sign.

The music for the cutscenes was not fitting Einhander was far better in that regard, however if you want a great Philosoma media experience, watch the Philosoma trailer on youtube, it's amazing.
