[PSO: Blue Burst] The Lore of Phantasy Star Online (Part 1: The Pioneer Project)

Ойындар

This is the first in a series of PSO videos where we focus on the lore of the game! This series will cover Episodes 1, 2 and 4 (though we may cover Episode 3 after). PSO's storytelling is very passive and requires the player to investigate themselves, so I wanted to cover some of the story elements for players who perhaps aren't familiar with the game's lore!
If you enjoyed the video, please consider leaving a like, subscribing or joining as a member! We're getting close to 1,000 subs as I upload this so any support is much appreciated!
[FAQ]
When do you upload?
I usually upload two videos a week (one mid-week and one on a weekend).
What games do you cover?
At the moment, mainly all things Phantasy Star Online-related. However, I do occasionally look at other games, like the Monster Hunter series.
Do you stream?
Yes! I stream once a week on Sundays, here on KZread! Streams are normally Phantasy Star related, but we may occasionally play other games too!

For those that pay attention to the lore PSO is secretly one of the most bleak and depressing games out there

Yeah that ep1 quest where you go to Caves to find the butler is sad as heck. Kireek slowly going insane was also pretty dark but I love the Soul Eater so..

Man, I love how the later episodes and PS0 expand the lore without destroying what we already had. The meteor, the photons, Mother, and all the other things that just feel like filling in the spots that the initial story just doesn't elaborate on.

It seems P1 tried to teraform Ragol, unlocked hell in process and we the hunters are the cleaners so to speak. To quote David Mitchell 'are we the baddies?'

Welcome to PSO! If you like the loot farming of Diablo you'll probably love it! The devs of PSO played Diablo to research it so they definitely were inspired by it! PSO then went on to be an influence for Monster Hunter!

Great video, and perfect start to the lore and story of PSO. Interestingly I wonder if in PSO we have an 'unreliable narrator' in the government, or perhaps the only information directly presented to the player at the start is only what the government is letting on. There's a scientist in Government quest 4-4 or 4-5 (though admittedly I think government quests are BB only) that says they found Ragol due to a meteor that impacted Coral, and introduced them to Photons, triggering the war that devastated Coral and lead to the Pioneer project.

Yeah, it is hinted that finding Ragol was no accident. The government are the real antagonists of PSO 😂

phantasy star zero is the first phantasy star game story i've experienced outside of NGS as i mostly skipped PSO2's story unfortunately... but hearing that PSO takes place BEFORE PSZero really intrigued me. phantasy star zero is like one of my favorite games ever now and the story has definitely gotten me more invested in the franchise as a whole (and also disappointed w/ lack of remakes!!!). i am deeply intrigued by the way surface society on coral redeveloped post great blank utilizing ancient tech alongside more primitive stuff resulting in the unique aesthetic and setting of coral in PSZero...its probably one of my favorite settings in a game/fiction i've ever had the pleasure of experiencing tbh. i'll probably try to play PSO soon so i just wanna say i really appreciate ur videos :3 i'll b totally fresh so all the info is great to have. i look forward to discovering what happened to those who fled the doomed coral before the great blank?? if i'm following correctly lol

Yeah, basically PSO is the story of those who left Coral to search for another planet. I'm the opposite in that I've never played Zero (I'm planning to though!). Glad you're enjoying the videos!

Great video. I really like how bleak the story and lore is in PSO versus the bright colourful art style. I loved having to piece it all together from Rico's notes, side quests, unreliable narrators and item descriptions, really sold the feel of being dropped into the middle of things with no idea of what is going on. Nice that this style of storytelling seems to have made a comeback with Fromsoftware games and their approach to story and lore.

The FromSoft method of storytelling does seem very similar, yeah. Some people don't like it but I've always thought it's a great way of encouraging you to explore.

One thing I never realized when playing the quest back again is how they seem pretty dark, like how they endlessly fodder hunter's into missions eluding them into thinking they are doin the right thing, also that they shouldn't disobey the government, and lying about there true reasons kinda scary .

Yeah some of the lore is hidden in obscure Japanese art books and so on, it's not ideal! I'll try and cover at least the major story points at least though!

Can you explain the difference between the blue burst and the original, dreamcast PSO v1 and v2?

  • @SectionSkyly

    @SectionSkyly

PSO v1 features Episode 1, with Normal/Hard/Very Hard difficulty. V2 introduced Ultimate difficulty and some other changes. V3 (Gamecube and Xbox) added Episode 2 and new classes (HUcaseal, RAmarl and FOmar). Blue Burst added Episode 4! There are other changes, but those are the main ones!
