Hello, I'm SectionSkyly! I'm a huge fan of the Phantasy Star Online series, which I've played for the last 20 years! While I'll mainly cover things related to Phantasy Star, I will feature other games occasionally too (especially action oriented games, like Monster Hunter for example).
If you're looking for a laid-back, informative video style (especially for Phantasy Star!) then feel free to check out my channel! I also stream once a week here on KZread.

oh yes dude im still plan on giving this game a try when life relaxes a bit .. dont kick me out the discord plz xD congrats on the 1k
Thanks! Don't worry about Discord, I have no intention of kicking anyone out unless I have good reason to! PSO and the Discord will still be around later
The Mars system reminds me of meteor from Gangnam City
Love this game!
I'm so glad it's still easy to find players now! Even 20+ years later it's still such a special game.
Maybe they added so many more tests for this version so you can get more experience if you start at level 1. I wonder if the Control Center and Seabed are also different. Also if you read the enemy data on Barbara Ray it talks about it being a theoretical metamorphosis/evolution of De Rol Lee if it managed to escape the sewers.
Yeah, I realised after finishing Temple that there's more data on Barba Ray haha. I'll cover that in the next one since I forgot! Alao good call on why there's so many quests, that makes complete sense.
Also. I think those are the mechguns I really want. The white ones with charge special. I really want them.
The white mechs are Charge TypeME/Mechguns. They're available from the Egg Shop (where you trade Easter Event egg drops) but might be available elsewhere in other events too. If you can't get them, I would just go for Charge Vulcans with hit which will work totally fine!
Another great video my brother! I finally got my Heavenly arms! However, I need a second one to max out my ATA. Then I might be a bit more helpful to teammates by more reliably paralysing enemies. The content to these videos is great! Although hearing anyone talk about pso is always a win for me.
I love this series! Despite having the GC version of the game, I never beat it after all these years. Anyway, keep up the great videos!
Thanks for watching! For what it's worth, the story is essentially the same as GC, just with an extra episode after it!
Let’s goooo!
This was a great discussion. I haven't heard too many comments from people that new to the game, especially having a PSO history as well. :) I started on Gamecube with friends. NGS is like a huge experiment to tool around with the idea of PSO having open environments, which runs counter to its original, hub-based design. I think a lot of the ideas in NGS feel like they did come from PSO, but were tuned more and more toward what sounded good on paper. Combat sectors are like an old PSO stage without walls in concept. You run around killing 'rooms' of enemies for some indeterminate amount of time (used to be navigating the mazes and taking wrong turns), you run into special 'rooms' (trials) and at the end of that trail is a boss spawn. Makes sense on paper, but there are definitely drawbacks, like not having as much of a sense of direction and a solid mission structure that has a definite end point. Combat sectors were designed to remove the need to hard-stop and re-queue to keep grinding in an area, but it seems that in practice, that lack of structure can sort of blur into background noise without any breaks. I think of all the content added to NGS, the one that feels the best is Leciel Exploration, which has a more definite mission structure. It's an excellent expression of NGS gameplay. It makes a ton of gameplay elements relevant and is tuned well enough that a lot of builds can work even if they're not perfectly optimal ones. Oh yeah, no mounts in the game as of NOW, but we're right on the verge of M.A.R.S. release at the end of the month, which is an evolution of a previous system in base PSO2: Dark Blasts. Those, if you didn't get to that point, were a new power you would unlock in Episode 5 that lets you transform briefly. You had a choice of 4 different forms and had higher mobility. M.A.R.S. appears to be like combining SUV weapons with the idea of a single custom Dark Blast that you can swap out weapons on. Looking forward to it. :) (The things you'd have seen that look like mounts are either Dash motions, occasional emotes, like the Ghost in the Shell one that can move a bit, or Wakers riding Fredran). Also, the thing with classes having fewer, more specific Photon Arts comes from the Scion Classes in base PSO2, which only had 4 for each weapon. You unlock those when you reach a high enough level with, I think 2 normal classes. They're honestly more of what people are talking about when they speak reverently of PSO2 base gameplay. I do wish the NGS classes had felt more similar to those. I loved a lot about the story in base PSO2. It originally had more context because of how you found/activated the scenes through the matter board system, meaning you'd find a scene in the field and click on it to watch it in that location instead of just going straight into all of them from the quest counter. The huge variety of characters and storylines did quite a lot to make it feel like I was part of a large organization with loads of people who have lives and things going on regardless of whether I'm there or not. They all had goals, and every so often, you'd run into them again and get an update. With NGS, I wish I had a bit more feelings that the other characters had stuff like that going on; their own plotlines that feel like they're leading up to something important for them. One thing that recently added a bit of extra character to some of them is the addition of Line Strike. Having NPC participate, having different skill levels and seeing what decks/character cards they like to use gives them another dimension they've been needing. :) Oh, if you want a really neat hidden song, check out the cave in Rayjord Gorge and go all the way to the back wall. Around there, you'll hear Leaving Flow. :)
Thanks for the in-depth comment! I get what you mean about the combat zones in NGS, those and the Leciel Exploration are probably the things closest to PSO. I think for me where they fall short (and where NGS in general does) is that I don't feel there's much incentive in NGS to actually go and hunt rares, which was obviously a huge part of PSO. Agreed about the characters, they were definitely fleshed out more in base PSO2. I will say though that I personally didn't like the matter board system as I found it a bit convoluted at times and filled with menial tasks that didn't seem to have any relation to story. To NGS's credit, the latest story chapter does make some strides to flesh out the story a bit. It's just a shame we now have to wait months before the next chapter! Definitely excited to try the MARS out when it launches; it does seem to be NGS's equivalent to Dark Blasts (I played most of JP PSO2 so I've used all of the Dark Blasts before). Fingers crossed it fits into the game well and is fun to use. Ultimately we wanted to try and do a video that shone some positivity on NGS while still suggesting some areas for improvement, as I personally feel that NGS gets a lot of negative press, some of which is unwarranted in my opinion.
@@SectionSkyly : I think the in-world idea for the matter board is that you were doing small tasks that altered the course of events to lead to Xion's desired plan in the long term; saving a little time for someone here, preventing a minor incident there, leading the right people to be in the right places at the right time. It's unfortunate that it ended up eating up so much time and being clunky to interact with. I hope there is more to see with the story situation in NGS. Chapter 7 had a major sign of promise too. That discussion about how the story tends to say everything plainly (this is a white sheet of paper - it's white). Well, chapter 7 had an instance of much more interesting delivery. The scene where you're led to the pod of 909. Zeph didn't say directly what was going on, but pointed out facts that led you to the issue at hand. That's way more interesting. :D
thankssss great in depth guide i needed this :DDD
Glad it helped!
Loved these videos man!
PS0 is the closest thing to PSO out there in my opinion. It’s a great game!
Yeah the story and zone order/progression is completely different depending on the race you choose.
I really like that actually, interesting change from the other games!
@@SectionSkyly Yeah its kinda like sonic adventure with the different story perspectives. Also, after watching the video fully, a few more things to note: - The icons for unexplored areas look bugged due to emulation. - The saber animation is different from what I'm used to on HUmar. I personally didn't know, but yeah there are different animations. - Sabers in general aren't the best imo. I always leaned towards doublesabers, swords, and gunblades. Even then, their PA really makes a big difference on how combat feels. - Camera control is done by holding X and pressing L or R. - A neat trick you can do with PAs is you can start charging it during a evade roll without having to attack first. - You can also pick up items with X and it doesn't have a delay like the A button does. - Unfortunately there's no quick menu. So swapping weapons mid fight isn't really viable. - There's very little touch screen functions sadly. But you can touch the minimap to bring up the full map grid of rooms explored. - There are no section IDs, but there is still item hunting. Its condensed to basically area/enemy and difficulty. - Mag feeding is more like PSO2 with being able to use weapons as fodder. So just way easier basically. Overall, I think this game is worth playing through. I treat it like a PSO demake to excuse some of the jank. But you get used to it once you get the feel.
Thanks for clarifying some of this! A few people have said the combat gets better with other weapons, which I'm glad to hear. It was probably pretty obvious that I didn't enjoy using the saber!
Great impressions. I wonder if the game is designed to play in the order of Human -> Cast -> Newman? The thought came to my mind that the reason items come from a loot chest and not drop from enemies is to reduce the entities on screen at once
Fair play for giving this a shot mate. I could tell the combat wasn’t inspiring you too much! It’s a cool idea for a portable game though!
Apparently the combat picks up, but the range (or complete lack of) with the saber was pretty annoying, yeah 😂 i'll probably try and check some other weapons and see if any feel better. Still a pretty fun game once you're done fighting the controls
I have been reliably informed that the 'Handstick' is actually a 'Wandstick'. I blame the font!
i remember trying this one but not getting in to far. sadly i dont have my ds working anymore so i could try again some day
Nice screen setup for the video :D Lol can you imagine if purple hair wasn't an option? You'd have insta-closed the game and given up on it! I love how each race has their own opening / story bits, and you also start with different maps! (you got the wetlands, I started with the valley) Also the music is fantastic, apparently the DS doesn't have a 'sound chip' per-se so they had to write it all in software which is even more impressive. "How does that even work, old age with a cast" - you've played PSU right? :P And it's called Wandstick not 'Handstick' lmao - the w in the font isn't the best. Even on actual DS hardware the text is a bit smushed. Map icons also glitch out on the emulator. PSZero came out the same time as PSP2I afaik, so there's a lot of crossover (dodge, the item drops are the same). Once you get a better weapon (better reach, or multitarget) combat feels a lot better. You can also use L to lock-on, and holding X along with L or R rotates the camera. (bear in mind the DS only had a d-pad) L and start is a shortcut to items, and R and start is a shortcut to equipment ^^ I tend to hold up on the d-pad and use X+L/R to make walking towards and focusing on enemies easier. You can also hold X to pick up items rather than A (and holding it down auto-picks them up). Enemies don't drop items, it's only the reward chest - but it's contents are based on the enemies you defeated (so you still have to farm X enemy to get Y rare for example). Slots are bound to armor, but no addslot item sadly :( Oh wow, Sarisa talking about landing in the valley and the dragon feels like it's almost keeping continuity between each race's story, that's cool. At least PSZ's birds aren't as bad as PSO EP4 xD I love how Zero's art style was to try and attract a younger croud (DS users) to the PS franchise, yet I'd say the game is way too difficult for younglings haha. Attacks do break freeze... yeah... >.> Chains (*checks the manual*) are when each party member completes a full 3-hit combo without interruption or other party members hitting the enemy (so player 1 does 3 hits, then player 2) - difficult with NPCs. "Shades of De Rol Le" - yep, there's ALWAYS a raft boss, even if this time it's a squid and not a weird genetically-altered-worm/serpent thing haha. The combination of hitbox and tiny weapon didn't do you any favours :P I started with a spear, which in this game is stab rather than slash and had an awful time. Switching to greatsword has improved the game massively. Congrats on beating him first time though! "Give me a dragon anyday" you'll regret saying that... xD Also long video = long comment, I'm so used to live chat haha, enjoy my essay!
Petition to rename Wandstick to Handstick. Good to know the combat improves with other weapons, the Saber felt awful honestly! I agree with you on the difficulty, it certainly seemed a lot harder than PSP2 for example. However, some of that could have been down to fighting with the controls!
9:40 PS0 INSPIRED THE SKYRIM INTRO?
😆 Phantasy Star inspiring everything
Never even seen this game. Thanks for sharing. 👍
My first time with it too!
New f2p progression account series when? Could even do a challenge run of some kind to make the f2p even more of a hindrance ❤
Just started watching these. These are great brother.
How do you get the “Dressing Room” option at character selection screen?
If you're on GameCube or Xbox, have 10,000 or more Meseta on your character and it'll appear. On Blue Burst, you have to instead join a team that has the Dressing Room unlocked.
Im split between Hucaseal and Hunewearl for offline solo play on GC. I like the versatility of Huney, its like the paladin of pso, but i like not missing with hucaseal, as it makes special attacks on weapons more useful and because i like her animations. Any suggestions?
Most importantly, play what you find fun! For me personally though, I find HUney easier for solo play (having lv20 buffs and debuffs makes a huge difference). The accuracy on HUcaseal is really nice and traps are amazing. For the weapon animations, I tend to find that only the dagger animation is noticeably better. The one problem I have with HUcaseal for solo is that their ATP isn't that impressive. They have more than HUney, but once you factor in the lv20 SDJZ HUney will hit harder. Ultimately for solo both will do fine but I personally think HUney is a little easier. That being said, experiment with both and see which play style you prefer.
I’m slowly working through all your pso content. I have tons of meseta on NGS but I keep coming back to pso ephinea. I’m trying to gear up but not that successfully. Can’t even get a heavenly arms.
Heavenly/Arms can be a fairly difficult drop! It might be worth registering on the Ephinea discord and trading for one (they're usually only a couple of Photon Drops).
@@SectionSkyly yeah I can’t even find many photon drops. I play mainly on my own and I can do forest and caves on very hard difficulty.
Don't worry, you'll start to find more as you level. Until then you can use things like God/Arm (an easier drop for some IDs). Accuracy is always a struggle unless you play Ranger until later on when you have the ability to find gear. There should also be an anniversary event on Ephinea next month which usually boosts rare drops a lot!
"These robots are actually really annoying, because they self destruct" - yep... I felt that >.< also I recognise the area, the 'sweeper' robots and even the boss. I guess at some point in the past I must have made some progress in PSP2, unless they show up in another game as well?
I was wondering why you weren't using your charge shots That SUV was wild for this video lol from borderline useless to shotgunning the boss leg hard
This is what happens when you constantly jump from one PS game to another I will try and remember for the next one! And yeah the SUV is weird; it seems great if the enemies are right near you but it has almost no range. Give me Sturm Buster or Paradi Cataract please
Yes love watching these. I’ve just joined ephinea. Struggling a bit in very hard now though.
Love that
Welcome to Ephinea! Don't worry about struggling, as you level and your gear improves a bit you'll find it gets more comfortable (for the most part, there are some exceptions!)
@@SectionSkyly I need some god arms which I’ve been gambling for very very unsuccessfully and a v501
Convallaris = lilly of the valley, so convalarrisega would be lillies of the SEGA valley of course! Edit: Not the religious sega locusts!
Religious locusts or praying mantis? 🤔 Thanks for the clarification on the Lily name, I have zero clue about plants
@@SectionSkyly yup definitely praying mantis but at least now we know to pray to religisega
🙏why praise Religisega when you can praise Farlla!
@@SectionSkyly Praise Farlla! Where is our farlla youtube emote? :(
I'll check if we have space (youtube emotes depend on number of members). If we have space I'll add it!
I think this probably takes place after most of the events of Episode 1, and the reason some characters don’t seem to know about what was discovered on Ragol is that the higher ups in the Pinoneer 2 government and Lab are keeping that stuff secret. It admittedly requires some video game story logic to make sense-I’m assume that, for whatever reason, they are making it seem like your character was not the specific person who followed Rico’s path and fought Dark Falz, which is weird. That said, the mysteries and “inconsistencies” of PSO1’s story is part of why I love it. It almost feels more like a FromSoft game or Metroid Prime with the way the story is delivered, and you’re piecing together the events after the calamities already took place. I would love for Sega to try that style of atmosphere and storytelling with the series again.
I'd never thought about the secrecy of the Pioneer government, that's a really good point! I do agree that it's weird that your character isn't treated as the one who defeated Falz (unless the dialogue changes if you complete Ep1 Gov quests?). Totally agree on the story; I love that it's delivered in a way that makes you question things and figure things out for yourself.
@@SectionSkyly i've been running through the govt quests in order recently (just got to spaceship) and haven't noticed any difference
I start my Phantasy Star exp with PSO2 2012 Japan, now having active account on both Japan and Global. PSO2 story is what drawn me to the series, I start research the classic reference they used in PSO2 and went on checking story and lore for several of classic one then watching gameplay as well. like the first time I heard of IDOLA the Strange Fruit in Base PSO2 I just totally loss my mind, as it is a mix of PS3 and PSOEP3 final boss theme in one fight. a lot of thing happens both good and bad decision from SEGA for PSO2, it been long journey so I have faith that NGS will work out in the end as the true ending of PSO2 at EP6 is just so perfect despite the messy situation in EP5. ps. The recent update with new CARD game is interesting take on reference PSOEP3 Card Revolution.
Glad you researched the older games! It's nice to see a PSO2 player go back and look at the older entries too. For NGS i agree. It's been a mixed bag so far but I'm hopeful it's finally heading in the right direction!
@@SectionSkyly That I've no doubt about them planning something, sadly their developing time is too long It SEGA we're talking about here, I play the game for many years I already adapt to them. There is a dead patch in base PSO2 as well, but everything turns out perfectly fine in the end (again PSO2EP6 is EPIC).
i really got caught out of guard when i did a side quest with tonnio and his girlfriend because i dint not payed attention to his story
I LOVED this conversation. And honestly I don't recall the last time I've heard a new players experience with NGS that came directly from PSO/PSU. Other than my own and some other friends. I feel a lot of the current playerbase is only new to PS series through NGS. So a lot of feedback and complaints tend to lack past perspective. Which can be frustrating at times.
One reason I started doing PSO videos was because it became very apparent that not many NGS players had played PSO before. i think because of that they don't have a frame of reference of how things used to be. Thanks for the kind words, this was really fun to record!
Talking about PSO2 and meanwhile Skyly looks like they're playing Sonic Frontiers xD
Nameless City in NGS is wild!
@@SectionSkyly That sudden finish though :O
Yeah, in that quest you run around and collect points for 15 minutes and periodically open chests with the collected points for gear. After 15 mins you get yeeted back to camp
Love these lore videos. Off-topic suggestion, I recently found out that on BB you can't use the telepipe trick and so rare monster hunting is incredibly annoying. Have you made or have you thought about making guides for what quests offer the biggest amount of specific enemies if chasing rare monster spawns?
Thanks for watching! Regarding the rare monsters, I can definitely look into doing a video on it. Might be a while as I have a lot going on between the lore series and the PSP2 series, but I can definitely do it. In the meantime, your best bet is to look on the Ephinea wiki and see which quests have a high monster count for the monster you're hunting.
Astarks **shudder** At least they don't seem to be able to hit you from half a mile away on this one haha. Hmm it's interesting how in the PSU games the SEED forms are all unique, yet in PSP2 (which I think if memory serves is the one that introduces actual Dark Falz rather than Dulk Fakis) there's PSO enemies as 'new' SEED forms.
Yeah, I'm not sure if it's because of the PSO 10th anniversary celebrations PSP2 was part of and they needed an easy way of tying in PSO enemies.
Ahhhhh yes can't forget one of my favorite Ramar weapons... The Baranz Launcher. Made from Baranz parts!
But yet somehow looks like a Garanz instead Great weapon but they botched the name!
Yay we're back!
Youre a real one for making these videos. I just got into PSO a few weeks ago, and Im surprised at the lack of youtube content available. The world and lore of Phantasy Star is so fascinating!
Thanks for watching! Great to hear people are still getting into PSO in 2024
Stream starts at 5:20
The hero we all needed o7
Ep 2!! Nice! I think the way you plan on breaking it up sounds fine. I’m looking forward to more videos!
How are u playing this. Is it the gamecube episode 1 and 2?
i wonder if it's a modded PC version? I want to play this again too. I remember playing this on dial-up with a crappy Net Zero account before being able to play it regularly. I want to play it again!
This is played on a private server called Ephinea. If you Google Ephinea you should find the website easily enough. From there it's an easy download and that's it! The server routinely has 100-200 people online. There are other servers available but I would personally recommend Ephinea if you want to play PSOBB. I should stress this is a PC version, but you can still play Gamecube online via ragol.org as well.
@@SectionSkyly I actually did some digging and fould PSOBB later that day and fired it up. My three younger brothers and I used to take turns playing it on the dreamcast and later gamecube. Now we can all finally play it together and are planning to jump online tomorrow! This is hands down in my top 3 games of all time and I'm glad I can play it again.
Haven't played this since gamecube. Last I played I was redria and purplenum. Was hunting for eicos ring. Feeding your mags certain food to make them into rare versions. Or the rare enemies spawns. Or making enemies weapons from there body parts. Saw this video and just went and bought a sealed copy of episode 1 and 2 for Ganecube. Can't wait arrives the 10th.
Always great to hear that people come back to PSO after seeing the videos! Hope you enjoy playing it again!
Wow that's a bit different than the GCN version I'm used to. I can only play in Offline mode for obvious reasons. But there is no Nol, instead there is a light blue sphere there. Also at the end of Temple Alpha there is no node to read to complete Temple Alpha, you just go straight to Temple Beta instead. Also I think its great that they fixed the typo at 4:14 on the GCN version it says, "is not an direct order"
Nol in Ep2 was a new addition in Blue Burst! Basically the game introduced quests called Government/Lab/G-General quests (for ep1, 2 and 4 respectively) that tell the story. Each quest is its own thing, which is why I could only do Temple Alpha here. It's worth noting that I could just do a normal run through Temple if I wanted and that would let me do Alpha, Beta and Final. The separation is just how these quests are structured in BB.
Yes! Been waiting for this. Keep these going mate. Don’t stop working through the episodes! Ep 4 and I would even keep watching if you went through pso 2 after this as I never played it.
PSO2 story is absolutely wild I may look into it in future, but PSO first haha
@@SectionSkyly OK so after we save her in the past we go back to the future and kill dark falz *meme of guy explaining and pointing at white board*
Ooooh PSO 2 would be fun. But yes definitely finish up PSO BB first! 😁
Interesting interpretation of the timeline. Funnily enough if you continue a save with completed data from Elly, Nol and the EP1 government quests you get different dialogue too, and I'm sure the lead scientist mentions your success in defeating Falz so I've always seen it as a straight chronology. Also you made a mistake, it's called Twitter not X ;)
That makes sense as I haven't done the Govt quests in ep1 yet! Believe me, I hate X as much as anyone else 😂
These are so awesome! Thank you for doing this.
Thanks! Glad people seem to enjoy them!
On GC I played as FOmarl. I mostly used a Talis and Double Saber to steal TP back. The only thing that made me sad is that I couldn't play a FOcast. Child me loved the idea.
Yeah, at least Sega gave you the FOcast option in PSU! I guess they didn't do it in PSO as a balancing thing since having traps and techniques would be busted
@@SectionSkyly For balance purposes, I would have given traps to all hunters and rangers. Since they can't use techniques above level 15 and they're not as potent from lack of MST.
now i wanna play this again
Good to hear!
