Protect your knees from injury

If you want to be riding dirt bikes or enjoy action sports for many years to come, this video shows you why finding a long-term solution for protecting your knees is critical.
Some riders think knee pads are sufficient, but they do not help protect you from hyper-extension, twisting or compression. In this video, Adam Riemann explains his experiences with kneebraces and the support they can offer during riding and or crashing your dirt bike.

I can't recommend this highly enough. I'm currently in physio after a minor ACL repair following a first lap motocross pile-up in March which also resulted in a leg break. I was wearing my POD K8s at the time and was a little disappointed until I showed the surgeon what I'd been wearing and he said he was 100% sure that without the brace it would have been a knee dislocation and all sorts of long term damage. Instead I got away with day surgery and a few months rehab, and if I'd have been happy with a 90% recovery I wouldn't have even needed the surgery. I was an early adopter of off-the-shelf knee braces and the Asterisk Cells I invested in back in 2000 lasted over 15 years with a little care and maintenance. I expect at least a decade out of the PODs - this isn't a big investment when spread over the lifetime of use, people spend more on graphics. In all that time, over 20 years of enduro and motocross, this is first knee injury I've had and I'm convinced that's down to wearing braces.

I will never bad mouth the use of braces and highly recommend keeping knees protected. But I broke my right knee twice through impact. both times while wearing a leading brand knee brace. After that I went back to pads. I found I was more at risk from impact than I was from twisting. Knee pads are not all created equal so if you choose that route get a good one that fits well. Leatt make a good version in their 3DF range but the TP 199 is apparently also good. I find them much more comfortable and they don't slip or move and my movement on the bike feels more natural. The best advice I can give is keep your knees strong. Squats are your best friend. I'm 53 and still riding the same way I always have despite two reconstructions in my right knee. The key for me was training after surgery and literally doing squats every day.

I wore custom made braces for most of my years riding. Found they make me a little more reckless with my leg placement. Probably been injured just as much with them on as with them off. The mobility limitation probably put me on the ground more. Wear TP199 mostly now. Kind of torn on the safety benefit. I've also limited chest protector use to rocky days. I've broken at least 11 ribs and lost one lung wearing them... and none while not.

@@rimshot223 Leatt Hybrid has that. But the pad isn't attached to the brace. I've crashed with them on as well as POD and Asterisk. POD are the least painful because the frame takes the hit. Leatt hurt the most. I've also been pole vaulted by a downed tree with PODs on. The limb speared into the brace frame just below the knee pad. It's a very beefy section. I was going 15mph and the rear end of the bike was lifted into the air and knocked to the side. My knee was the fulcrum. Not even a bruise afterwards. No way would a knee pad have saved me there.

Nice words Craig,I do squats almost every day.I cant get on with knee braces and use modded soft pads /acerbis knee guards.I use my leg as a counterweight on corners sometimes but keep it higher than it should be to avoid impact. Its slightly slower but im not in a race pro. I also personally think that 2 strokes are more dangerous as with the addictive rush of power means its easier to get out of control.

As you said beautifully in the video Adam... it's not the brand that matters, it's the fact that you're wearing them at all. I myself invested in Pod K8 years ago. At first I couldn't get used to them. Now I use them not only for riding, but also for skiing. And it just doesn't feel the same when riding/skiing with or without it...it helps you feel more confident... I'm glad the Pod K8's did the job and your knee is ok. 🇦🇺🙌🇸🇮

Absolutely, I decided to pick up braces for this riding season, and I'm glad I did, I've had my normal number of offs and bins, and there are a few that I feel I definitely would have been worse off for not having them. It's kind of to the point if I'm going for just a quick ride I consider low risk I'll skip them, and them spend half the ride thinking about what I'm doing in regards to not blowing out a knee, which makes me ride a little slower, which in turn makes me more likely to dab, thus increasing my risk of injury all the more. I went for some leatt hybrids for a bunch of reasons, primarily because they work well for me, but as long as it's a decent brand, any brace is better than no brace.

I only used to wear pads for impact protection and figured that since I was fit and strong from years of karate and general exercise. That I was ok without braces. Then after several recommendations and being able to ride 70km out the desert with a fractured medial malleus on my left ankle (on what could’ve been a shattered ankle) due to the fact that I was wearing really good boots. Decided it was time to invest in some knee braces whilst recovering. Bought the Pod K8 V2 (K4 V2 was still a few months away at that point and viewed them as a 5yr investment) and can’t ride without them now. Not tweaked my knee since. Thoroughly recommend getting a good set of braces to anyone. I got the Pods after trying my mate’s on and his recommendation after trying a few pairs. Another thing I won’t ride without nowadays is a neck brace. Was never sold on them for years until I saw my same mate go head first into the dirt like superman from about 10ft in the air. He got caught out in a series of small bowls and missed the connecting dune line and tried to change line but ended up getting thrown off the bike at an angle going around 60kph according to his GPS. I had to take evasive action to avoid him, landed the drop and bottomed out but stopped on (another shout out for investing on your suspension…). Saw the whole thing from start to finish, would’ve snapped his neck. Dangerous hobby but with the best of gear it’s easier to get up and walk away. 🙏

Two years ago i falled down at low speed in sand aproaching to corner, front wheel sinked in sand, it was really soft fall down, not dangerous. I teared MCL and ACL ....... after surgery i was lucky to come back riding in 2 months, now i use knee braces on road, off road, no matter what bike i use. Also when i go downhill on bicycle, i use motocross knee braces and buzzer.

I was wearing Asterisk Cell braces for some years but they never fit me so that I forgot about them when riding. Then decided to go with custom braces (saved up for these) and found out that my knees are way different in size - so no wonder Asterisk or any other on the shelf brace felt "off". Been riding with CTi Custom braces for 3 years now - and can't even count how many times it has saved my knees. Bigger spill this year was literally me stalling the engine and losing balance on rocks. Bike fell on left foot and pinned me in place I rotated around with a lot of momentum on that leg ... without a brace that knee would have torn. I had a bruise on the thigh and nothing more (well handlebars broke 3rd metatarsal on the foot). Or even the times when my knee was pinned between something or other and the bike.

I got knee braces early on, as I started riding. Lots of experience bailing and crashing on BMX and MTB. I wasn't going to take any chances with a 250lb bike and higher speeds. They've saved me at least 3 times. One bad get-off was a tip over, down a steep hill, as I was traversing sideways. I flew 10-12ft down and landed straight on my extended leg. Crushed the meniscus. No damage to other ligaments. I'm certain that without a brace, I would've folded my knee sideways. Not only did it prevent a worse injury, it allowed me to ride out 10mi back to the truck because the brace keeps a significant load off the knee. Even if the knee explodes, the brace still keeps the leg together. I don't even ride my DS without braces. Mostly because I can't stay away from hill climbs. Knee brace fitment is like a helmet. I've got 4 different ones, and they all fit different. Go to a shop and try them on before buying. Or shell out $2000 for a custom DonJoy, CTi, etc. Unfortunately, the latter offer pretty crappy impact protection.

I've been riding with knee braces for a while now - I also have the Pod's. Took a little time to get used to them, but now they're like socks - don't even notice them. Up until recently never had cause to "test" them. That was until I was riding down a fairly open trail, probably around 30mph - and clouted a tree branch that was sticking out into the trail. The impact cleaned me right off the bike. The tip of the branch impacted the top of the lower part of the brace and ripped apart the "ligaments". BUT - saved my knee/leg. Just like you showed in the video, I replace my ligaments, almost good as new. Highly recommend the Pod knee braces. Expensive, yes. Worth it? 110% Yes.

Great video. I just had a get off, silly little crash really. The bike ended up coming down on me from about 6 feet up while I was face down and landed on my foot with a fully bent knee. The knee braces saved me from a full one reconstruction no doubt about it! There was a little twisting motion they didn't fully stop, but it would have been a far sight worse without them. Knee is recovering well, I'm already back to riding ready stuff less than two weeks out. Everyone should be wearing them in my opinion.

Super good information awareness 👍🏾It is hard to reckon why most riders seem to reason their way around wearing proper knee braces. I can think of two reasons people are put of from wearing knee braces. 1. The high dollar cost 2. There aren’t any alarm bells going off about the minority of knee related injuries while riding. People just take for granted that knee injuries won’t happen to them.

I also am researching the best boots for ankle support for the same reason.... This is internal debate have with myself constantly. Especially the initial comfort issue while adapting to the feeling of braces. But. After snapping my tib and fib,(and tearing muscle very badly) in a downhill MTB crash and the many operations I have had to repair the leg, my knee and ankle has been severely affected and now knee braces are going to be a must if I want to keep riding as the muslces themselves still aren't strong yet to handle even minor sudden impacts. And that's after 9 years.... As side bar, I have only been able to get back on a bike 3 years ago as that's how long it took to get my leg good enough just to ride a bike.

Recently I did my first enduro trip ever. And I am pretty sure my knee braces (mobius x8) are the reason I didn’t torn my ligaments.

I have broken a bone in my left wrist by trying to save myself from a slow tip over. Do you have any experience of using a wrist brace. Thinking I will have to buy one in near future

I had never had knee braces but when I was working at a bike store and I was customers coming in to buy knee braces after there 2nd or 3rd knee reconstruction I took the plunge myself and got a pair! Money well spent, they don’t take long to forget you are wearing them and when you ride without them you feel naked.

I use full carbon braces. Never thought they did anything until I’m undressing after a couple of falls on the GS throughout the day and see the abuse they’ve taken that I never even noticed.

Good advice from a pro. Actually I didn't found braces that fit for longer rides. I do rally riding and think to buy one. The POD are really uncomfortable for me. The shop where I wear this thing's told me, that tailored Orthema fit best, but they are hell expensive.

despite having my acl completely torn off while wearing my knee braces. I wouldn't go out riding without them on. I was lucky probably because of the brace that there was no play and almost no swelling after the incident. After a few weeks of physio I was back on the bike. after a few years still no pain in my knee as long as I keep the muscles strong ... I also had the pod braces I have no problems with riding inconvienienves at all. my brother has regularly sanded his knee cavaties with his alsterisk brace unfortunately

First time I used Pods were brand new set out of the packet and straight into National Off-road round ... Forgot they were on mid-race. Never looked back.

I will never ride dirt without knee braces again. Had too many close calls, almost tearing my ACL. I'm a small guy and the Alpinestars youth knee braces fit me perfectly

If i was riding at your level then yes i would wear decent knea braces. But Im not taking the risks i once did for my once a month enduro ride. I have been happy just with the plastic shin and knee guards. My risk level is low and my office job would allow me to work with broken bones :P my knees are pretty stuffed from play sport more then riding anyway. A few rides back a guy on a wet down hill single fell over and the bike weight forced his foot to turn 180° spiral fracture in his shin. He had braces on so i guess it stopped the knee rotating.

I beleive you would get more protection by strengthening your knees with targeted training. I still wear knee braces, as a bit of extra backup but I don't count on them saving me knees.

I love my PODs but wish they had better protection for impact, I get hit through the gaps in the knee protection and right through the patela cap often. Rock hits to the side of the patela are completely unprotected when knees are bent. It's a tradeoff.

Last year I was out and new trail. Section in tight trees and I hit the tree hard not seeing how tight it was of course. Finished the lap and hopped off the bike. Couldn’t straighten my right leg. Took off brace and noticed bent the hinge inward. That would’ve been my knee! I never ride without even if a quick ride

I can't agree more, just buy a set. cheaper than surgery and think about the amount of riding you'll miss while healing from knee surgery

Just bought K4 Pod. I measured my knee. My girlfriend measured. I dont know how how but we got me to a small. I got the brace. Waay to small. (Thinks its because you have to measure right below the knee. I dont have much there. But quite big quads.) So am gonna go up a size. They seem like good quality :-)

Could it be knee braces for Enduro, pads for motocross? I don’t even ride yet. Why don’t the knee braces have padding?

Nice if you have between 300 and 800 dollars to buy a pair. The model he has there sale for about 800 bucks in the US. Yeah cheaper than a visit to the ER and specially having a surgery, but the price puts it out of reach for many. Sad!

Much rather a broken tib/fib than a blown out knee. Not so sure about a femur due to the possibility of the fracture rupturing the femoral artery.
