Proportioner Build & Test

I built a proportioner for my soft wash system. I tested the ball valve on the water side to see if the draw is the same as the metering valve.
Updated 5/4/2024: Parts list for all fittings from Farmchem.com. Farmchem does not have the check valves so you need to get them from US plastics.com or another source. Just remember to make sure they are 1/3 crack pressure. You will need to purchase the metering valves separately. I went to my local pool company to purchase Pentair valves. I upgraded to the 1/2" Asahi valves from the Pentairs. You could also convert all the fittings to 3/4" for additional flow if needed.
3- HB050 (1/2" MNPT X 1/2" Hose Barb)
1-HB050-025 (1/2" MNPT x 1/4" Hose Barb)
1- CR050 (1/2" 4-way)
6- NIP050-SH (1/2" x 1.75" Nipple)
3- HB050-90- You can use this 90 or a straight fitting depending on your set up (1/2" MNPT x 1/2" 90 degree Hose barb)
3- 22210 (1/2" Check Valves from US Platics.com)
2- SL050-90 (1/2" Pipe Elbow)
1- HB050-075 (I chose to use this fitting from the proportioner to the pump. (1/2" MPNT x 3/4" Barb)

I run a ball valve on the water side and two Pentair valves for soap and SH. Ball valve stays open for a house wash I dial the SH between 1-2 number on the Pentair. Works good. I throttle the ball valve back a 1/4 turn for roof washing. I run the SH between 4-5 number. I run a NorthStar 7gpm pump 12 volt. Going on my 3rd year with that pump. I buy my SH at 10 percent. Pentair valves are going on 3 yrs with no problems. I run 200 ft of 5/8s flexilla hose. My system works for me no issues. I will say I tried running a Pentair on the water side at first and it restricted my vertical distance by 10 feet when it was on. The 1/2 inch diameter proportional system is restrictive in my opinion when running a 7 GPM pump. Now a 5.5 gpm might work fine. But just wanted to share what works for me.

What I’ve gathered from the pentairs are they are honestly the same when it comes to percentage. All the way (if you’re using 10%) would be a 50/50 mix which would be 5%. Half way would be 2.5% and so on. The numbers tend to scare a lot of people cause they think the numbers on the dials are 1%,2%,3% etc lol

See the above post I don’t run a Pentair on the water side. I run a a ball valve that is left open all the time. Since I switched to 12 percent SH I leave the ball valve open all the time even when doing roofs. Also a Pentair valve on the water side will restrict your vertical distance by 10 ft. It did mine anyways. But do what works for you. This is just my experience.

“Hey catch up”.. I love it when you say that on your vids😂😂 Anyway there’s a brand ASAHI who’s metering valves design solved this phenomenon. By full open the metering valves practically the same inside diameter as the ball valves. If you look at the other metering valves the inside diameter at full open is way smaller than the ball valve, hence less flow! Wash on brother 🤘🏽

What a lot of people don't understand, is the reason for quality proportioning valves. One look at the cross section of the two valves tells you everything you need to know. That being said... in negative pressure application, it is CRUCIAL to use valves with REPEATABLE CONSISTENCY. Do you need a proportioning valve on you water pickup? Not necessarily. What IS important, is that YOU know YOUR equipment. Know your settings, and the results the produce. Also, know your chemicals. Density and viscosity will effect flow in negative pressure (pickup) applications. A high density/high viscosity foaming agent or surfactant isn't going to flow like a low viscosity solvent/detergent. Take a day and run flow tests on your equipment with the chemicals you use. Keep a cheat sheet with the various valve settings and flow rates.

Assuming the flow rates remained consistent day to day on the first test, wouldn't that result in about 3-4% mixture and more flow overall? Curious what the comparison would be in gpm for the ball valve/pentair vs 2 pentairs wide open.

  • @allproexteriorservicesllc5338

    @allproexteriorservicesllc5338

Not sure about the GPM test. However, with a ball valve flowing more than the Pentair it would dilute the SH%. The pump is only a 5.5 GPM so not sure about the extra flow. Thanks

The biggest issue I was wondering about before getting a blend manifold was the size of the suction hose going from the manifold to the pump. I run all 1 inch suction hoses to my 5.5 pumps. I was always told to double the size to whatever size your inlet opening is for your pump which is 1/2 inch. I was wondering if you can do the same for the suction hose going from the manifold to the pump. 1/2 inch seems like it would be a lot of stress on the pump trying to pull through that and also trying to pull from 2 more separate 1/2 inch lines plus another 1/4 in line. Just wondering what the thoughts were on that.

I never tried anything bigger than 1/2" feeding the manifold. I did use a 3/4" from the manifold to the pump, but did not see any improvement. This is why I run a 3-way ball valve on my SH line. So I can convert my SH line to H2O without losing any flow. Hope this helps. Thanks

am I wrong in thinking you could just use all ball valves? wouldn't both h2o and sh being set on full open be 5-6% mix, set h20 full and sh to half, now you got 2.5-3% and so on. as for surfactant just crack it open till you like the draw.

I'm not the brightest light bulb, but is there a need to meter the water. Can you just run the ball valve for the water fully open. I understand it has a different flow rate from the pentair valves. But does that really matter. Please clarify. Also wouldn't more water flow be an optimal scenario. I don't know anything, I'm just trying to learn to set up for myself. Thank you

Yes, more flow from the ball valve will not give an accurate mix. Knowing the percentages with accurate valves equates to applying to correct solution & chemical savings. Knowing your chemical draw is key in the industry. Hope this helps. Thanks
