The system I've started using for propagating cuttings is to cut a large plastic bottle in half, use the bottom as a pot, then once the cuttings have been prepared and planted, slide the top into the bottom to create a more or less airtight, high-humidity capsule. Obviously if you have a greenhouse, there are probably better methods to propagate plants in bulk, for the amateur hobbyist it's a cheap and low-maintenance way to ensure your cuttings don't dry out.

Thanks for your comment. Here is a link with some photos today. The first shows some of the 2 yer old cuttings in an outdoor holding bed. The next shows a recently planted cutting of "Yellow Lantern". The third shows some magnolia seedlings planted last month, another great way to propagate magnolias. photos.app.goo.gl/2LyXoM2rE23o45uh7

Any experience with jane magnolia propagation? That's the variety I want to try. Looks like you did a good job. Curious how much better success rate you would get with an air layering method.

We did not try Jane but had great success with Ann which is related.(80% of cuttings rooted). Cuttings are a common way of commercial magnolia propagation. Have not tried air layering with magnolias but will this year.

What are the light requirements? When can you pot up? What are the soil requirements when potting up? How long should you keep in protected area/green house?

Our misting bench has a mesh cover that admits filtered sunlight. We potted up in one gallon pots with Promix in late summer after roots formed at the misting bench. Pots were moved outside Ito a sheltered area, lightly covered with leaves during the winter. Most are held outside in pots for another year.

Suspect you may need to wait and take the cuttings in June. You can also grow magnolias from seeds collected in the fall.

Would you have a higher rooting success rate if you have a portion of the "heel" from old growth at the bottom of your cutting?

Am not sure. We had about a 50% success rate, with some varieties easier to propagate than others.

Yes, if they are taken in the softwood stage like in this movie. We had about 75% success with the cuttings in this video.

Hi Brad. Thanks for the video. I was excited to find steps for this process from someone near me. I attempted to root 6 greenwood cuttings. Following your timeline, it look old like I have one which may survive. This has hardened off, and sits in peat pots at this time. So…what’s next? :)
