Taking Cuttings of 'Jane' Magnolia - Propagating a Deciduous Magnolia

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This time of year is an excellent time to start making more plants with plant propagation. Today I took some cuttings of a Magnolia x 'Jane' which is a deciduous magnolia that grows best in plant hardiness zones 4-7. Jane is often called a "Tulip Tree" due to its tulip like flowers that bloom in the Spring.
Our original plant came from a layered branch cuttings at my in-laws house and today is about 8 feet tall. For this video I took 15 cuttings of the'Jane' magnolia and snuck in 3 cuttings of Oak Leaf hydrangeas. Why not?
I've not rooted 'Jane' magnolias before and thought now would be a good time to try it. Hopefully in 6 to 8 weeks I'll be able to share the results with you.

I have had my Magnolia Jane for 10 years in my zone 4 nearly zone 3 location in western Wisconsin. A few years ago we had a winter with 59 days with below zero temps. She almost didn't make it but now she is fine. Easily my favorite tree.

Thank You for these videos. I love learning and experimenting with plants. I'm going to try the crepe myrtle branches. To provide shade for parking under and make this property look pretty.

Unfortunately these didn't work out. I think the cuttings were at the wrong stage and I took them too early. Ill try again and see. This was attempt number one. The oak leaf hydrangea is doing great though.

They didn't do well. I've been able to root them through layering but they don't seem to enjoy being rooted from cuttings.

That first batch did not make it. I tried a second batch without much success as well. Timing may be the issue. I'll try again and see if summer cuttings do better.

@@Growingthehomegarden I did the same thing and put them inside a closed white trash bag in the shade. I had about 6 root but I took the humidity away too early so they dried out and all died. I think if I gradually introduced them to regular humidity they might acclimate better and maybe some survive plan to try this next summer.

I have never been able to propagate Magnolia cuttings. I even tried air layering with no success.

Try layering a branch on the ground. I've done that by placing a rock on the branch and leaving it. It takes some time but eventually roots are formed and you can dig them up and separate them from the original plant.
