Rooting trees from a branch - The root ball method.Magnolia champaca

Комедия

This is how to root woody ,and hard to root trees and vines. Its fun! You just need to be patient. I have personally taken cutting with this method from many citrus trees.

    lovely presentation,, I too am a propagator freak with the same respect and love for plants that I can sense you have. i am experimenting with Magnolia Stellata, rooting a low branch, at the node in the ground but will try your method as well. You may want to emphasize that the growth does spurt forth from the noded area, for when I learned that a lot made sense. More respect and reverence for plants needed all around. I work in hospital,,,folks do not give a plant to a sick person who cannot care for it, I would be a wash with plants to care for and find homes for.

    Delmis Rios Thank you for posting such a kind comment. This method also works really well on repertories, and tropical plants. Often when plants are kept inside during the winter for many years they will become long and lanky trying to stretch to what little like they can get. This is a good way to start a new plant from those overgrown dracaena’s and rubber plants.

    couple "also"'s- you can use packing tape around the plastic bag to make tight ball. i've seen people use shrink wrap (you can get the small rolls with a handle at moving stores) someone also manufactures a plastic "root balling" device, 2 halves that fit over the branch and do same thing. this was really well done and well explained. only thing i am curious about is you nuking the peat moss? by doing this you kill micro nutrients and good bacteria. i am not trying to be one of these a-holes that says: you did it badly, here's how to do it better. i am trying to civilly discuss, please. thanks!!! i did very much enjoy your technique and shared it with others in a local gardening group.

    Hi Scott, Lovely instructions. Appreciate the presentation, I was here watching your video to know more on use of rooting powder. I liked the info very much. I am also a great nature lover for the exotic variety of trees. The ones which happen to less in my part of the world. These days I am hunting for Baobab (Adansonia digitata) sapling. Perhaps I make a clone your way, one once I get to the tree (I have few leads as where its available- just 7-8 in India). I also appreciate the fact that you used the sentence "Grand mother's plant if you need to clone." Yes indeed my Granny's place has few old trees and they remind me of my grand mother a lot. I would love to have a clone(your way) of them soon. In the presentation you have used Magnolia champaca plant, let me inform you its widely grown/available tree in my place Bangalore.I am also crazy about its smell. I never thought it would cost $70.00 we here propagate it via seeds. I recently brought the same form a renowned Nursery for 65 cents and I had thought it was too high amount I had paid. Any way I am going to take care of it well, now. I'll plant it in my Farm House soon. I wish you please also check out images and posses very soon the following if you love exotic plants Egg Magnolia its same as champaca, in fact better and pls check the Cannon ball tree, Adansonia digitata. Nice, what is the biggest recommended brach size from which you can make a root ball? I suppose the bigger the branch, the bigger the amount of peat moss mass and the longer the wait.

  • @ScottRiddleArtist

    @ScottRiddleArtist

    6 жыл бұрын

    Jose Gascon That’s a very intelligent question. Actually I would suggest using a less mature branch. Because the more bark you have to grow into or the roots have to grow through the longer it’s gonna take. So let’s say maximum 1 inch but shoot more toward a 1/4. To 3/4 quarters inch branch. And the root ball mass is pretty much the same size every time. It’s just to give or stimulate a place on the tree for the roots to grow out of. Actual size? Baseball to softball size?

    Hi Scott, do you apply anything at all to the main stem once you cut the root ball? I have the same tree, but the branches are drying out because I've made cuttings on them without knowing they can't really be pruned. I don't think I can save it anymore at this point, but once you cut the root ball, does the wound heal pretty well?

  • @ScottRiddleArtist

    @ScottRiddleArtist

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello friend. A little mouthwash and then some latex paint. That’s the old-school way of sealing a tree branch after you prune it. Of course any kind of alcohol we work. But as it’s at a premium right now. Mouthwash might be easier to get your hands on. And from my experience. You do not have to treat the routed part of the branch before you plant it. I hope that was helpful! My tree is making seeds this year. I Had read that after they make seeds they start blooming. I sure hope not! LOL. And I can’t imagine there was anything around to pollinate it to make fertile seeds? But we will see. Like life, horticulture is a constant experiment and learning experience.

    Thank you. Very informative. What's the size of the container for grafted Champaca?

    They are trees. So if they’re right and firemen they will grill quickly. I would start with a minimum of a 5 gallon container. Be prepared to get large.

    I'm on certain I've never tried it and that type of tree. I would start the process in the spring. If you live in the north.

    Thanks for the advice and the video. The heating of the soil, etc. for infection control is great. Ok, can you tell me, if the branch was already excised will this method still work ? I have a Ming Aral. cutting, that was given to me, it's still going and I'm trying like hell, but nothing seems to be working. Thanks
