Done it many times with crepe myrtle, sweet pepper bush, butterfly bush. Wait until the sucker is about 8-10" tall and just take a shovel and dig it up about a 10" circle. plant as soon as possible and miracle grow transplant formula with water 😁

Works well with them - I have done several cultivars

So after you do that would you prune I somehow to make it fuller or leave it alone and just let it grow?

not sure what you are asking. I grow the suckers for several years until they are bigger and prune normally.

How long should you wait until you try to separate the sucker from the mother plant? I’m trying to do what you need with an old crabapple tree that has suckers growing.

1) depends on the plant and when you do it. It takes months to root. I usually leave it a year. 2) if the suckers on the crabapple are from below a graft, they will not be the same plant as the top part. 3) apples are more difficult to root.
