Propagate Lilac Shoots or Suckers - Easiest Way to Start Lilacs!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
The easiest way to start lilacs is by digging up suckers and this video goes with my blog post How to Propagate Lilacs from Suckers.
Update: • Lilac Update - Side Ga...
Using this easy method you will get more sweet-smelling lilacs in your garden that bloom sooner than lilacs you may start by cuttings. You’re going to love this one!
Spring is a great time to do this as the soil is moist and easy to dig and the suckers are really growing. It is also still cool enough that the freshly replanted suckers can establish easily with little stress.
And the lilacs that may already be blooming won't be harmed or lose any blooms. Win, win!

You're so inspirational! I will be transplanting a shoot off a gigantic, sprawling 120+-year-old "Mother" lilac bush from my great-grandmother's farm that just sold. Having never done anything like this before, you make it look so do-able. ... Also, I never knew I could pot a lilac bush! ... And Brilliant tip to spray paint those black growing pots. Thank you so very much! Am looking forward to exploring your other videos! 😀

Wow! That's incredible!
Thank you for this. I've been afraid to keep lilacs in pots because I didn't think they would do well. I have 2 very special lilacs trees from my mom who passed a couple of years ago. We are renting a house right now so I don't want to plant them and leave them here. This gives me hope that I can keep them in pots until we land in a forever home.

Interesting to hear about the potential spreading of suckers and having to pull them up etc. because after 7 years of living here, the 1 lilac I have, which was here before me has never really spread. Lilac is probably my favorite natural floral fragrance and I just love it and came searching to see if some how it could be propagated. That'll you for sharing, I'm going to go look and see if I see any suckers....side note, my rose of sharon sends to spread seedlings all over and they start to grow in places is rather not have them and have had to pull some, I wish my lilac was like that. 😁

There are Lilacs that have been grafted onto root stock that won't sucker, so take a look at the base of your Lilac and check if it is one that has been grafted. You will find a definite area along the trunk that is different if it has.

Loved the video! I have a nightmare on my hands. A couple years ago, I thought I propagated my Grandma's lilac bush, but turns out I've been babying Bittersweet Nightshade! UGHHHHH. Now I've got to destroy it and start over. I think I'll start by spraying and getting rid of the nightshade, then in the spring, I'll follow your steps and get the lilac just in a pot, wait another year and then plant it where I wanted it in the first place. I hope I can get rid of the nightshade. I'm so embarrassed. It must've been growing under the lilac bush, and those were the shoots I dug up.

LOL, it took me a few moments to figure out what FPF was! There are over 400 cultivars of lilacs so I don't know which new variety you mean exactly but some lilacs, like the korean lilac varieties don't seem to sucker as much and I am not sure about the old, yet popular Josee reblooming lilac. I would love to get one of those. These are all very old lilacs and tend to sucker a lot but mowing down or clearing out the suckers is a simple spring chore while the ground is still soft. How many suckers they produce varies widely.

Only the cuttings really need the rooting hormone to help it grow roots, Lilac suckers usually have roots already if you took it correctly. I just dug a sucker up from a friends lilac and did not get roots but I stuck it in a pot anyways and so far it is still alive. We shall see if it develops roots. I did not use any hormone on it.

Most lilacs are hardy down to -40F degrees as long as they have well draining soil. I don't know about whether they need to be planted deeper for that reason or if they will need to be trimmed as I have not had to deal with the deep cold. Our lows in the winter usually don't go below 10 degrees Fahrenheit and that is an extreme, we are usually in the 20's and 30's for lows.

I am in Zone 8a. Look at the description tag on the plant you wish to plant in a pot, then deduct 2 zones. So if you are zone 7 then see if the plant is hardy to Zone 5 then you know it can survive in a container. Also, you need to consider where your plant is located on the property. Being closer to a building or in a sheltered spot can also affect its ability to survive.

Lilacs can endure temps down to -40 degrees. Just be sure they are free draining, what would kill them is not the cold but having them sitting in water that froze. If you are still worried put them in a unheated garage. Bringing them into the house would wake them up before they are ready.

Thank you for the video! If putting the lilac pot in an unheated garage for the winter, I assume it needs watered, how much how often please?
Is there a certain month that I should dig up the suckered? My daughter has a tree and I would like to take a sucker to grow in my garden 🙂

I like to do it in Spring and early Summer when they are throwing out new growth and the ground is soft but I am sure you can do it anytime you have a sucker to dig up.
Do lilac bushes do well in shaded/ partial sun areas?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse

The ones I have are in partial sun and so far so good. Others around this neighborhood are also in part shade and do just fine so I would say yes.
Mine doesn't have the suckers and is on the side of house. It is bent over and very thick on the limbs. Almost like a tree but several of them coming out of the ground but no new ones. I bet it doesn't get enough sun where it's at but does make fragrant blossoms. Can you help me. I had to go to KZread because the video didn't work on Google.

If you don't have any suckers then try rooting from cuttings. www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/rooting-lilacs-or-semi-softwood-cuttings/
Do you feed them while in pots or change the soil?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse

I give them a houseplant feed with NPK ration of 10-10-10 in Spring while in the pots. And I haven't changed the soil. I would if I saw signs of distress but so far so good. If they are in the ground I don't feed them.
Can you keep the potted lilacs out in the winter zone 6A?

It depends on the variety but I have seen it done. You may want to tuck them up close to the house to get some of the escaping heat to give them a little help in winter.
Do you know if the dwarf miss Korean lilac sets off suckers? I've got a hedgerow of that dwarf variety,and would love to snag up some starts 😃🌸🏵🌹

@@jeansandhoodiegardengal2975 Cool, thanks for letting me know!
Hi I have many suckers that I want to take out but they are very close to the mother plant. I don’t want to disturb it either. Is it still ok to do this?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is, they can be a bit tougher to cut through but it won't hurt the mother plant.
What about the sucker that is growing from the trunk of the lilac? Can you use them?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse

I have never tried that. To me that would be treated like a cutting instead of a sucker as it does not have roots. I have a post on starting lilacs from cuttings here: www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/rooting-lilacs-or-semi-softwood-cuttings/
Can you transplant in the fall

It is worth a try. I have not done it in Fall myself but I don't see why not.
Nice video, thank you. About how long does it take for a cutting such as this to grow into a nice sized plant? I'll be planting my straight into the ground.

I planted it in a pot because I did not have anywhere for it yet. It is now out in the garden.
How long does it take before you see blooms on the suckers you transplanted?

It can take 3 to 5 years to get blooms.
