"one of the essential ways that knowledge advances, is through questioning" (1:54). . . there are Buddhist versions (Jataka texts), Jain, (7:07), etc. . . the compositions that go into the making of the Mahabharat, span from 400 BCE to 400 CE (10:24). . . the essence of history is understanding the past (27:27). . . I loved this interview so much; it was balm for my soul after having been immersed in so many male religious narratives of late! two great intellects practicing samvad, respectful dialogue that enhances the learning of us all; thank you!

She is selectively picking things from here and there and presenting them as one, she made so many false claims and many anti nationals things, in all her claims she tried to glorify western and painted India as some backward place, if read history and cross question the events then u will realise that she is lying, Alexander stopped and idea of conquering the world after the battle of hydaspes and and the Indian king with whom he fought was just an ordinary king, Alexander won against small kingdoms and after coming to India he realised that his army is so small and can't win, so he decided to return, 3rd century BC

@@Goofyderclown Mahabharata was an oral tradition at the beginning. Later on those fragments were compiled (during 400 BCE to 400 CE). The Epic genre is not History. It looks back at the past nostalgically (just like Sanjay Leela Bhansali movies). It might be possible that while compilation of Mahabharata some Buddhist ideologies were introduced, since the audience was already exposed to it. The historical past for understanding is right here today in 2022 describing what a particular community or cult have been religiously evolving to what they present themselves as, today. Romila seem to clear out that Indians (hindus) did not have any recorded history. Whereas even Islamic rulers/clans had recorded history which clearly and openly are in praise of mughals desecrating temples and looting more than just 80!! Even in British national library there are books written on how mughals deceivingly massacred hindu armies in Hindu Kush.

Mahmood of Ghazni destroyed important Hindu shrine- Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple (known as Kesava Deo Temple) in 1017 AD along with several other Hindu and Buddhist temples in the holy city of Mathura. Mahmud of Ghazni destroyed and looted one of the most sacred temples of Hindus - Somnath Temple in 1025 AD killing over 50,000 people who tried to defend it. Due to this Mahmood Ghaznavi is considered as a looter and plunder by the most of the non-Muslims of South Asia. // Mahmood of Ghazna became the sign of respect and bravery for South Asian Muslim and is considered as their Hero. You can see how much these two peas in a pot politicize history by always referring to the present nationalist government. However, ironically they dont analyze anything about the marxist historiagraphy Romila is part of which is is directly responsible for saffronization of indian history now. Teesta doesn't ask critical questions and doesn't give the grace of her opponents. But she expects that of her critics. She asks questions in which the answers she can agree with. She says its a "tragedy" that babri mosque is destroyed, which it is, but never uses that word to describe the destruction of indigenous structures by foreign invaders. Ever. She is the typical emotional professional with a vendetta. Not very intelligent.

She conveniently avoid mentioning burning of great libraries at Nalanda, Taxasila, etc. during the time of Muslim invasion, which caused discontinuity of knowledge in India. It is also intriguing that the supposedly greatest Indian historian has publicly claimed that she has no expertise in Indian languages like Sanskrit, Parakrit, Tamil, Pali. Most translations she relies are from European scholars whose translations were funded for the colonial agenda. Her main influence D D Kosambi himself was an amateur hobbyist Historian who dabbled in applying dialectical materialist framework on indian history while he had idle time in his day job in the Indian Statistical Institute. I am as a matter of fact highly intrigued by the idiocy and gullibility of her eulogizers who claim that she is some kind of scientific historian who relies on archaeological and literal scientific evidence. My only guess is that these people are impressed by her authority and pomp and have not read her works where she does not hide her biases and politics. It is pretty open out there and you don't need to be sherlock holmes to discover her Hindu phobia.

That's how they have been playing and setting narratives for past 70 years. When it comes to Muslims - they say don't generalise, terrorist are just 0.1% of population while all terrorists are Muslims. When it comes to hindus - Even if it is only 1 person, they will say all hindus are like that.

Thanks to Dr R Thapar for sharing her view on a variety of topics relating to ancient India. We all need to shed our biases and 'understand' history as it is. Once is amazed at the way in which mythology is being replaced by history. My earnest request to those who demean her and other historians of repute is to prove their own theories in logical, rational and scientific ways so that they can be examined and debated by the academic community.

She did it by actually challenging them academically unlike some random human on KZread. There is a reason she is highly appreciated in history academia around the world.

VIjayalakshmi history is extremely selective science in fact it is not a science at all.Problem with any humanities subject like history is that you can come up with a view point and then select evidence based on that to prove your point and that how people like Romila earn their living.I have no problem with that. There is no point debating but i find many of her conclusion against common sense.

Why can't they rewrite it at least now and all the stinking facts of our history is removed. Like the fact that the supreme warrior Karna who was fostered by a shudra was not accepted as a disciple by Drona due to that same reason. May be that would serve the purpose of the inflated Indian pride. Doesn't it? :)

This misinterpretation of history by left oriented people like Thapar needs to be countered systematically. Their undue influence has led to an entire generation of Indians misreading history and feeling that their past is something to be ashamed of. It is high time history books are re-written to reflect a balanced view rather than a concocted and unscientific version of history taught in school so far in India.

Clearly she has something against this present govt and would probably work for its downfall no matter how much progress this govt makes and would unequivocally deny any thing good about this govt. She is nuts and was totally surprised that Romila bluntly corrected her assumption that somnath was already destroyed many times by earlier indian kings.
