Procrastination Isn't Always Laziness

Ойын-сауық

Fr. Mike teaches us the two questions we need to ask ourselves to figure out whether our procrastination is laziness or 'strategic procrastination'. He also draws the distinction between procrastination and sloth, and gives direction on how to break out of a pattern of sloth.

    Thanks for the practical and to-the-point video! My notes: 1:30 To get CLARITY, ask: 1) Is this what I'm supposed to do? 2) Is this what I'm supposed to do RIGHT NOW? 2:29 STRATEGIC procrastination is beneficial for complex tasks that require: creativity, analysis, and/or planning 3:31 Do right away any urgent tasks that are CLEAR-CUT or simple e.g. Gotta leak? Call a plumber 5:51 How to break out of procrastination: Take a step back and PLAN What am I supposed to do right now? Start SMALL and just do it Break down complex tasks into subsets of smaller tasks e.g. Read just one chapter from a book

    I like your quote: ‘tasks we have to do are not meant to be overwhelming, but empowering.’ Take the next baby step in the right direction. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Keep taking the next baby step in the right direction. The thought of doing something is always more difficult than the actual chore. Sometimes Satan likes to exaggerate things in people’s mind to keep them from serving God and neighbour.

    College student too. Procrastination master. Seriously, I could share stories...Sloth is probably my most recurring, habitual, "main" sin. Pretty much straightforward sloth, too. This video gives a great, deeper insight into sloth though that is intriguing. Huge sign I stumbled upon this video, I feel like it was a wink from God. I always underestimate His patience. "That's why KZread exists. For procrastinators." Father, if you had any idea... Spot on video as usual! Love the enthusiasm brimming in each video. Between you and Bishop Barron I can at least feel spiritual while I procrastinate!

    +Bob Del Re God judges the living and the dead. Even if part of the trinity may live in you as the Holy Spirit, we are still broken. So your fear-monger personal theology where you self-determine everyone else's salvation based on subjectivism, well my friend, that "i think" could be heresy itself. My best advice, because I love you as I assume you love us, would be to go to confession to multiple priests to seek multiple perspectives and solutions. You'll get your peace back, your joy back, and it'll help you happily invite people into a Catholic relationship with God, rather than scare-tactics. Trust me my wife's spiritual gifting is evangelism and being a missionary, and scare tactics scarecly ever worked for her, when she made the transition to building a connection with people and seeking to understand them first and hear their story first, and then inviting, had we learned to build His kingdom. Do I agree with everything every pope, bishop, priest, deacon, sunday school teacher has ever said? No... but obedience in love, respect, forgiveness are principles required above corrections in theology. People who do wrong but aren't openly psychotic or possesed shouldn't be labelled as you have, they are people in God's image who have fallen, who need to recieve his mercy through first, connection, then love, then mercy. I am humble enough to say I may be wrong on this, just felt i had to speak. May God bless you with peace and joy, I trust in His plan for us. ;)

    Whilst washing the dishes, you could be thinking about the theme for the homily? I am a great one for leaving the dishes for 'the morning'. Then, a few sundays ago, I watched a priest cleaning the chalice immediately after serving the Eucharist, as priests all over the world do. Can you imagine a priest giving out the last Host and saying 'I'll just put all those bits and pieces over there in the sink, and do them in the morning'?

    You're acting like an offshoot Protestant. Catholics don't typically go around bashing others. I grew up being attacked for my Catholic faith, for which I'm grateful because it only sealed me more firmly in the arms of Holy Mother Church. May the Blessed Virgin intercede for you with the Holy Spirit that you may be showered with graces and virtues.

    Thank you, Father Mike. Procrastination for me is not because I don't want to do the thing I am supposed to get done, or I'm too lazy to do it. I'm actually a very hard worker. I think its rather a type of mental block and my brain goes, "well what if I make this decision or do this NOW and then something changes in the future before this deadline is here and I have to redo it or I've made the wrong decision", and thus I wait til the last minute to fully commit to whatever it was I was supposed to get done. It guess it can also be characterized as an insecurity or indecisiveness when it comes to making decisions about how soon in advance I should complete certain tasks.

  • @Nyx773

    @Nyx773

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, to me, it does sound like insecurity/indecisiveness and perhaps a reluctance to committing. I've used self-help books/videos to gain confidence, but the most effective was mental/behavioral health professionals and support groups. An example situation that isn't quite the same, but maybe it might help: I once had a wonderful boss with only one significant flaw: he would change his mind often. What helped me was to do the easy stuff first, talk to other employees and vendors (who knew his ways) to get their perspective, then check with the boss again before doing any difficult work. I also created lots of "to-do" lists and recorded my process for reference when it came to my yearly review.

    Hi! Sorry for the delay haha. What she meant, I think, is that people that had great ideas but never did anything to achieve them, because "well, it's too complicated, or hard, or I don't really want to do it", They never tried. But those in heaven did what they could, in the moment they could. Maybe they were'nt super bright, talented or naturally generous, but they acted when they could, they knew that any little thing is better than nothing at all.
