Procrastination Isn't Always Laziness
Ойын-сауық
Fr. Mike teaches us the two questions we need to ask ourselves to figure out whether our procrastination is laziness or 'strategic procrastination'. He also draws the distinction between procrastination and sloth, and gives direction on how to break out of a pattern of sloth.

Thanks for the practical and to-the-point video! My notes: 1:30 To get CLARITY, ask: 1) Is this what I'm supposed to do? 2) Is this what I'm supposed to do RIGHT NOW? 2:29 STRATEGIC procrastination is beneficial for complex tasks that require: creativity, analysis, and/or planning 3:31 Do right away any urgent tasks that are CLEAR-CUT or simple e.g. Gotta leak? Call a plumber 5:51 How to break out of procrastination: Take a step back and PLAN What am I supposed to do right now? Start SMALL and just do it Break down complex tasks into subsets of smaller tasks e.g. Read just one chapter from a book
I like your quote: ‘tasks we have to do are not meant to be overwhelming, but empowering.’ Take the next baby step in the right direction. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Keep taking the next baby step in the right direction. The thought of doing something is always more difficult than the actual chore. Sometimes Satan likes to exaggerate things in people’s mind to keep them from serving God and neighbour.
Thank you father, loved the words, "it is not supposed to be overpowering its supposed to be empowering"
As a college student, I really appreciate this video. Very encouraging, and it made me step back and think.

College student too. Procrastination master. Seriously, I could share stories...Sloth is probably my most recurring, habitual, "main" sin. Pretty much straightforward sloth, too. This video gives a great, deeper insight into sloth though that is intriguing. Huge sign I stumbled upon this video, I feel like it was a wink from God. I always underestimate His patience. "That's why KZread exists. For procrastinators." Father, if you had any idea... Spot on video as usual! Love the enthusiasm brimming in each video. Between you and Bishop Barron I can at least feel spiritual while I procrastinate!
Lately Iam procrastinating and I have been praying about it and this video popped up, I didn’t search for it on KZread or web nor talked about it. But video came in my feed, Gods way of answering the prayer in Jesus name,
Thanks Fr Mike, needed this video because I was 'supposed' to be praying the Rosary and not watching KZread and I decided to watch your video and well, now I"m off to pray the Rosary.. God Bless you Fr Mike...

+Bob Del Re God judges the living and the dead. Even if part of the trinity may live in you as the Holy Spirit, we are still broken. So your fear-monger personal theology where you self-determine everyone else's salvation based on subjectivism, well my friend, that "i think" could be heresy itself. My best advice, because I love you as I assume you love us, would be to go to confession to multiple priests to seek multiple perspectives and solutions. You'll get your peace back, your joy back, and it'll help you happily invite people into a Catholic relationship with God, rather than scare-tactics. Trust me my wife's spiritual gifting is evangelism and being a missionary, and scare tactics scarecly ever worked for her, when she made the transition to building a connection with people and seeking to understand them first and hear their story first, and then inviting, had we learned to build His kingdom. Do I agree with everything every pope, bishop, priest, deacon, sunday school teacher has ever said? No... but obedience in love, respect, forgiveness are principles required above corrections in theology. People who do wrong but aren't openly psychotic or possesed shouldn't be labelled as you have, they are people in God's image who have fallen, who need to recieve his mercy through first, connection, then love, then mercy. I am humble enough to say I may be wrong on this, just felt i had to speak. May God bless you with peace and joy, I trust in His plan for us. ;)

Thank you, Father Mike! As a writer, I gotta tell you that you need crock pot time to stew on ideas and improve your writing. It helps me every time. Writers' block can be so frustrating but it's inevitable. God bless you. I love you!
Straight to the heart of the matter -" I need to do 'this' - - but, I'll do the dishes first," which leads to doing other stuff, and not taking care of the first really important item - something I've been doing for over 50 years! Thank you Fr. Mike - glad I watched this!
Thank you Fr. Mike. I've been trying to put a Catholic art history blog together over the past 5 years and I've always faltered because I was overwhelmed with ideas; particularly the big and the grandiose. I prayed to Our Lady last night for guidance and clarity. This morning your video was the first thing I saw on my homepage - She has clearly lead me here. This is everything I needed to hear and I will now try to take things one step at a time. God Bless you.

Going down a rabbit hole of your videos is enabling my procrastination, Father Mike! LOL!
Encouraging and amazing! Will never get old. 'Heaven is full of energetic people'. Thanks Fr. Mike!
Thanks for the video! The timing is, once again, impeccable. I remember watching the "What's Your Bedtime" video at four in the morning while avoiding going to bed, and now I watch this video while I ponder my syllabus for this semester. Its perfectly timed, a little creepy, but definitely appreciated. Thanks!
This is an excellent companion video to the one you did on being overwhelmed nearly a year ago. Great as always! Now lets see a book by you!
I am so glad I have found this channel. All these topics are equally entertaining, relatable, insightful, and helpful.
'Crockpot creativity' might be the most Minnesotan phrase I've ever heard and I say that lovingly as a lifelong Minnesotan
Thank you for this wonderful talk, Fr. Mike! I'd never heard it explained like that. God bless...
Wow! I so needed to hear this. St. Theresa of Avila is my favorite saint primarily because she says short, exacting words as you just quoted. I hadn't heard that particular quote but it's so St. Theresa :)
Thank you! I’ll start doing what I know I need to do “now”. Sounds like “Power Of Now”
A timely video ; I found Father Mike on the KZread Channel probably in the month of June 2017.... I suffer from Mood Swings and this year has been awfully chaotic. I've watched several of his videos today, 11/10/17, saving the one on Procrastination and Acceptance hoping that I can get back on track by reaching out to our Lord and Blessed Lady in praying The Rosary. God Bless Father Mike.
That's a brilliant quote to end this great video! Thank you Father Mike
LOL! I know what you mean. Father Mike is addictive. He is sincere and funny and really full of insights
LOL, KZread was created for procrastinators! I really like the concept of putting ideas in a "crock pot" ... but don't overcook them Thanks Fr Mike you have inspired me to get some [ugh] housework done :^)

Do I hear the timer ???
Whilst washing the dishes, you could be thinking about the theme for the homily? I am a great one for leaving the dishes for 'the morning'. Then, a few sundays ago, I watched a priest cleaning the chalice immediately after serving the Eucharist, as priests all over the world do. Can you imagine a priest giving out the last Host and saying 'I'll just put all those bits and pieces over there in the sink, and do them in the morning'?
Thanks for this! Been procastinating for weeks and this helped me find ways to work already ♥
Thank you father Mike for this Video!
The moment you realized people would be happy if you didn't say your homily. . . . It was so funny! I'm glad you kept that in the video.

You're acting like an offshoot Protestant. Catholics don't typically go around bashing others. I grew up being attacked for my Catholic faith, for which I'm grateful because it only sealed me more firmly in the arms of Holy Mother Church. May the Blessed Virgin intercede for you with the Holy Spirit that you may be showered with graces and virtues.

In a way motherhood is a meditation on what you are supposed to do now. Children, especially babies won't let you do it any other way and even teenagers need so much guiding and managing to stay on task.
Thx Father Mike I needed to hear that.
Great video man! Glad we got people like you in this world💪🏽
Thank you, Father Mike. Procrastination for me is not because I don't want to do the thing I am supposed to get done, or I'm too lazy to do it. I'm actually a very hard worker. I think its rather a type of mental block and my brain goes, "well what if I make this decision or do this NOW and then something changes in the future before this deadline is here and I have to redo it or I've made the wrong decision", and thus I wait til the last minute to fully commit to whatever it was I was supposed to get done. It guess it can also be characterized as an insecurity or indecisiveness when it comes to making decisions about how soon in advance I should complete certain tasks.
@Nyx773
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, to me, it does sound like insecurity/indecisiveness and perhaps a reluctance to committing. I've used self-help books/videos to gain confidence, but the most effective was mental/behavioral health professionals and support groups. An example situation that isn't quite the same, but maybe it might help: I once had a wonderful boss with only one significant flaw: he would change his mind often. What helped me was to do the easy stuff first, talk to other employees and vendors (who knew his ways) to get their perspective, then check with the boss again before doing any difficult work. I also created lots of "to-do" lists and recorded my process for reference when it came to my yearly review.
Thanks for this very detailed explanation and solution. I will apply this process immediately
The moment when he said "Hey Mr. Plumber, or Ms. Plumber": that was a true moment of good character coming out.
Thank you for sharing St. Teresa de Avila's quote. I struggle with procrastination/sloth in some areas for sure.
Wow, this was fantastic!
Thank you for sharing God bless
Saint Josemaria Escrivá has a teaching abou the "Heroic Minute" that I was reminded by this video. It is basically get up immediately when you wake up, but it can apply to lots of other things in life
Thank you Fr. Mike for your powerful witness in today's confused, troubled world.
Sometimes I get so dizzy and sleepy and give up it's so dangerous
Brilliant thank u 👍

God bless you Fr. Mike!! Thank you for sharing the simple but extraordinary truth through these little videos!! They have been so helpful and inspiring to me - we need more priests like you to be so on fire for their faith!! Praying for you to continue what you're doing and keep persevering!!!

This is one of the best Fr. Mike videos I've seen so far - maybe because it's so relevant to me!
Thanks Fr Mike!!! Truly what I needed to hear today. Love all your stuff. Including the Podcast with your homilies. I am laughing when you make your jokes and am shocked no one else gets them. Many blessings to you, your work and your family. Have a great weekend.
Does this apply to prayer as well
Gosh do I feel better! I call it marinating. Let’s form a procrastinators club.. Laughed my head off.
Fr Mike gets me😂😂😂
Fr - I LOL when you said 'homily - bad example' Thank you- and the Holy Spirit, for your insights and sharing those with us in KZread land!

Thankyou father for this message!
Me too 🤔
Thanks God firstly for Fr. Mike! Thanks Fr. Mike for such helpful pieces of advice! Thank you very much! Since I learned what the word "procrastination" means, I've thought it as a bad habit, then now I know that it is not too evil as many people tend to show it. May God Bless You too!
Merci beaucoup mon père ! Thanks a lot Father for this most-needed podcast! I'm actually struggling to move my b*** to do my household tasks and find absolutely no motivation... This video showed me that I need to find out what I should really do first. God bless
I’m confused. What are we supposed to do with our big ideas and projects then? What if you are « talented » what do you do?
❤️
thank you Fr.
Thank you Father
Thank you, thank you 🙏
Love your chats... crock pot creativity is a great term and concept. I got bogged down tho wondering if one of your sideburns is longer than the other. Augh. You have been a great find for my spiritual journey.
Thanks father!
I have gotten your best Hamleys from doing the dishes got might’ve spoke to you about dirty dishes or something as a family

Cause that’s why youtube exists. For procrastinator like you and me 🤣🤣
I’m procrastinating from praying rn 😄
I hope to see you at Seek, ever since I saw at SLS, I've been a fan! Keep doing what you're doing, these videos are awesome! Can you do a video on Irenaeus' claim that Jesus was over 50 when He died?
What am I supposed to be doing?
I don't get it. The st. Theresa of Avila quote is super scary. Why energetic people in heaven and people with talent etc in hell ? I know this isn't strictly literal but I'm just lost on that. I have some great ideas I'm working on to help the poor. An idea that would feed them and me. It's a lot of ideas where I have to use my talents and skills and put together ideas and make it happen. ;(
@adrianatorres4813

Hi! Sorry for the delay haha. What she meant, I think, is that people that had great ideas but never did anything to achieve them, because "well, it's too complicated, or hard, or I don't really want to do it", They never tried. But those in heaven did what they could, in the moment they could. Maybe they were'nt super bright, talented or naturally generous, but they acted when they could, they knew that any little thing is better than nothing at all.
