Today we are taking a look at Pakistani Al Khalid tank, which is potentially one of the worst Main Battle Tank in the world. Pakistan and India have been going after each other for a long time, and having already reviewed Arjun tank and the problems of the tank, I thought it would be a good time to take a look at its main nemesis, Al-Khalid.

    The frontal armor data is very vague at best(The 400 and 300 im guessing its based on the Type 90 but Al Khalids armor is improved) due to lack of information being given out by HIT (Producer of Al Khalid) all that's actually known is that its modular composite Armour on top with high hardened steel plates over rolled homogeneous layers underneath. Also the assumption based on a few pictures that ERA is not fitted on hull with turret is also wrong as proven in the picture shown in the link below. ERA is fitted on both turret and hull during wartime conditions. pakmr.blogspot.com/2011/10/modernization-of-al-khalid-main-battle.html The engine was choosen for reasons such as better suitability for a relatively smaller tank as Al Khalid and ability to withstand the desert heat conditions of Thai desert and Indian Rajsitan desert. At a speed of around 74km/h its not a issue. Not much is known about it. Yes the original Al-Khalid has issues but so do most first tanks variants like Abrams M1A1 Its said that the Al-Khalid 1 is largely different (the mainstream AlKhalid variant currently) with many upgrades to protection firepower and digitizing a lot of analog components While the Al-Khalid 2 will be based on MBT-3000 according to some sources

    I worked with the company that made the Motion Simulator for Al-Khalid and gun simulator for other Pakistani tanks for crew training back in 2008/2009. I got to speak with a lot of Army personals and all of them told me this tank is not the best in anyway. The way they wanted to use it was "shoot and scoot" tactics and defensive roles. But even in defensive roles they knew a lot of them will be lost, but because of the numbers and weight they will be easy to get to the front and then fall back behind artillery and air cover quickly. In offensive operations they would have used a mix of Ukrainian T-80UD and Al-Khalid supported by Al-Zarar and T-69 tanks. Back then they didn't see any big offensive action happening against India in the future at all. That was because they thought India and Pakistan will not have a big war where the Armour will actually be used against one another to grab territory because of nuclear threat. Which didn't work as Indian doctrine is still attacking with a lot of armor especially T-90s to spearhead the attack in heartland of Pakistan and call Pakistan's "nuclear bluff". Will Pakistan use tactical nukes to stop such advance, I hope we never have to see that, but right now that's the only thing Pakistan got as Tank on Tank Pakistan is way behind India. Maybe the latest acquisition of VT-4s might change the situation a little bit. Even in 2008 the army was not too invested in this tank. The engine is the biggest obstacle to put better armor on it. They tried getting Ukrainians to develop an Engine for the Al-Khalid 2 with at least 1500hp. That never happened so Al-Khalid 2 is delayed indefinitely and probably will never happen. They call this tank an MBT but actually it's more of a defensive and posturing tank.

    @Musa Ahmad motion simulator is basically a big box platform with insides made to match the tanks internal compartments. It's a platform that's placed on hydraulic jacks powered by motors. You can learn to drive and fire the weapon systems. The sights are linked to a 3d env and the sights have lcd screen playing the 3d env like a game. So when you go over a bump in the 3d world your platform moves, giving you the feeling of a real tank going over stuff. Gun simulator is the platform without the hydraulics. But the insides were agian made to look exactly like the tank turret. You have to go through all the processes and workflows of firing the real gun. Or else you can stall the systems inside the tank. It saves a lot of cost in training.

    The video is has some research flaws, but that is in no way the fault of the creator. There is just so little information about these tanks to make anything close to accurate. But I’ll try a little, I’ve driven these and spent quite some time around them. First of all, the protection. The numbers quoted at the start of the video are in fact pretty accurate, but only for the original Type 90-II or Al-Khalid tanks. The newer ones have considerably better protection, though I cannot quote numbers. It is not as good as western MBTs for sure, but that is expected considering it’s not a tank from a advanced nation. It is still enough to deal with a lot of what it will be fighting, plus a lower weight was a bigger requirement when it was designed due to transportation and terrain requirements. Secondly, the ERA, the Wikipedia mention about the APFSDS protection is, as stated, not true. But the question about the ERA only being on the turret is easily answered, it is taken off and installed as needed and during wartime it would in fact be installed with ERA on the hull and the turret (where possible). As for the what the ERA is, Originally it was the mark 1 as mentioned in the video. some later production models do have an indigenous one too which is probably better than the Mark 1, maybe as good as the mark 2, but I really can’t say about that so that stays there. The ERA on the turret does have to be taken off for the VARTA APS to be put on. But that probably wasn’t a consideration when the tank was originally designed. Most of the facts about the gun were correct, as for the ammunition, the best rounds it could fire are Indigenous DU rounds, and Pakistan does have the Chinese 125mm-3 model, but I don’t know if it’s the “standard” ammo the army carries. The rest about the thermal systems, commander not having thermals is correct. Next is mobility, for the original model of this tank, the engine, as underpowered as it is now, was pretty decent since the tank is much smaller and lighter as compared to something like an abrams or an Arjun, but the newer models (The Type 90II and the Al-Khalid “original” are pretty similar. Then there was the Al-Khalid-1, an upgraded variant. Whose basic specs are also available on Wikipedia so I won’t type them here) and the engine did start to feel underpowered for that. Though it isn’t really slow…or maybe I just feel that because other tanks I’ve driven were slower yet. Lastly, the Pakistani army is well aware of all these flaws and Wikipedia as well as other places have mentions of “Al-Khalid-2” (which would make it the third one). Which is indeed in development (and has been for quite a while now, but Pakistani RnD is a little slow due to a smaller budget than something like the USA). It will be fixing most of the issues with the current Gen including a bigger and newer engine, newer optics (third gen Thermals) and thermals for the commander and better protection, plus a New APS that wouldn’t require removing the ERA from the turret. However I have not heard of the gun being changed (the guns and capacity were changed from the first to the second variant.) Overall, still a pretty decent video considering how little information is available, if you have any questions, you can ask.

  • @comradeclaus

    @comradeclaus

    4 жыл бұрын

    id05 id05 id05 id05 the production rate in the past has been As per requirements and Hasn’t been slow at all. You can find production numbers in sources from interviews. The production numbers for the last 1-2 years however have been slow due to the development of the next Al-Khalid, the Al-Khalid-2, plus they’ve been upgrading the older AKs to the newer AK-1 standard. AK-2 R&D has been slow. So slow in fact that the Pakistani military even tested other tanks like the VT-4, but in the end they’ve decided to stick with the AK2 program. Which should be in its final stages by now, what’s holding it back, I’m unsure of at the moment. But it certainly does exist, so do prototypes of it. And it’s still under development, once it is finished production will reach maximum again and the older ones will be upgraded aswell. Funds aren’t really an issue in this regard because it’s an Indigenous project and overall costs are less than if they were bought from another country. Other than that, the military is upgrading its T80UD tanks to the Newer T84 OPLOT standards and is still looking for a third tank to supplement The AK-2 and the newer T84s, the current competitors seem to be more T84s themselves straight from Ukraine and T90s (if Russia allows). The VT4 was tested in Pakistan as I mentioned but it doesn’t seem to have been selected. Interest was also shown in the Turkish Atlay, but it also isn’t fully completed yet, it also seems to be too heavy to fit the Pakistani requirements, but only time will tell for now. Most of the parts for the AK are now designed and produced in Pakistan including the Gun barrels and most electronics like the BMS and the Shells, armor etc. The engine is the only major imported item. (Unlike the original AK which was a mix up from parts from all over the world.) In the Newer AK Pakistan is hoping to put an Indigenous Fire control system and APS aswell. The first has probably already been completed, the second, I’m unsure.

    Al-Khalid is a pretty old tank, it was developed in the 90s when China wasn't very good and enter service in like 2000. I would say it is a pretty cost effective tank for a not very wealthy country like Pakistan. In the last decade these tanks should hold up fine against India's armed forces. But these need to be replaced as they are clearly outdated and India is going to mass produce T90MS under license. Not to mention they already have quite a large number of T90s that is also being upgraded at the moment.

    Andreas Leonhardt why then the leopard 1 is still in service? I'm sure it's not the only tank designed in the 1960s and still in service today. The point is that if the design is good why throw it? It s foolish to disregard a tank which is intended as a low to medium budget. You don't need top tier tanks to fight against lower ones. Romania was guaranteed at that time by the Warsaw pact, so the soviets had the upper hand in the alliance.

    Fair enough analysis. The engine was chosen mainly because it could cope with the summer heat in Pakistan. The British and Chinese engines tested failed completely. The Ukrainian engine was the only one that worked fine, and is the same or similar to that in the T-80UD, which is Pakistan's best protected tank at least. The power to weight ratio isn't too bad, but they've been looking for a 1,500hp engine for years and look like they're going for another Ukrainian one as those seem to be the only ones that can manage the heat. The protection isn't anything as good as it should be, but the composite armour is modular and was always intended to be replaced with more modern types as and when they became available. The Varta isn't fitted operationally (I think it was mainly being trialed for an upgraded variant, but never adopted), whereas additional ERA is. The images that show the maximum number of ERA plates like the VT-1 is the operational ERA plate layout (though even that needs to improve). In peacetime they leave most ERA plates off. They're looking for a new third generation TI sight. I can't say much about the ammo, but it was mainly intended to be able to cope with the T-72M1, which it can do perfectly fine. At the time it was designed the T-72M1 was considered the only tank it was likely to come up against. If that other APFSD round has been acquired (it probably has), that was done so to improve firepower against the T-90. At the end of the day, the AK had to be better than the T-72M1, which it clearly is. It also hasn't been upgraded since it entered service. It can hold its own on a South Asian battlefield, there's nothing really bad about it that can't be fixed, and it should be around for a while even if Pakistan is now interested in the Chinese VT-4.

  • @comradeclaus

    @comradeclaus

    4 жыл бұрын

    The VARTA is optional, most units opt for the added ERA instead since VARTA is getting a little old now. They’re also looking for a newer APS to put on it for the next Generation. The Pakistani army does have the 125-3 Chinese rounds but I don’t know if they’re the standard round these tanks Carry or if it’s the older 2. The 1500HP engine, third gen thermals and a thermal for the commander plus better protection are all supposed to be a part of the Next upgrade but RND is slow because of budget constraints (though it should be close to done by now). Pakistan did trial the VT-4 tank but it did not place any orders or show further interest. It is currently showing more interest towards The newer T84s (and hopefully upgrading its UDs aswell) and maybe even T90s if Russia allows it.
