    With my 11 year old and I both playing goalie, I certainly can attest to how expensive gear cost is, especially as he grows!

    Honestly I felt like going to the cowlingless skates was one of the biggest performance advantages I have found. I was able to pick up Bauer 1X skates at a huge discounts which helped out but I would go that route no doubt now.

    Interesting topic today, I always figured that my level of experience was less important than the level of the shooter when choosing what level gear. In my experiences over the years in beer league or pick up hockey I have found it not uncommon for there to be one or two guys that are way above the level of the rest. They're shooting the puck like Happy Gilmore and you're standing there in some bargain basement gear from Play it Again Sports and thinking "Why did I want to be a goalie again?" The other thing I learned in the current market is that just because something says Pro on it doesn't make it good protection. I recently sent my new "Pro Carbon" chest and arms out to have the arms upgraded because I was getting bruising. Dave at The Goalie Factory told me that they do a standard package for my brand and model and all the pro's get the arm upgrades. This would have been nice to know when I was at the store spending $550 on a "top of the line" unit.

    I've been a follower for a while and I'm so glad to see you back after you hung up the skates! I'm a 31 year old beer leaguer and having grown up playing hockey, I've always wanted to get pro level gear. After a few years of acquiring gear piece meal, man I tell you having pro level gear does so much for confidence! In my opinion, pro level gear is worth it if only for the durability. If there's any one piece I recommend getting the pro level for, it's the Mask. All it takes is one slapper to the head and it's over. You only get one head, don't skimp out on protecting it!

    My first set of pro gear..... Lange goalie skates, 1979 Bourdon leg pads, 1980 Cooper GM-12 blocker, and GM-21 catch glove with cheater, 1979 (used, with first set of gear I bought) CCM goalie pants, which I "frankensteined" using the pro padding from a pair of Cooper defensemen pants I bought, 1979 CCM chest pad, Cooper SA-95 arm pads, 1979, (best available at that time) CCM helmet, with extra padding I added in the forehead area, with a CCM cage, then a Cooper HM-30 cage, back to the CCM cage after a puck went through the Cooper cat's eye and gave me a black eye! OUCH! 1979 Louisville goalie sticks, bundle pack of 6, wood, 1980 I have other new gear over the years. I currently have Vaughn goalie gear, but with CCM goal pants, all pro style, all purchased new. I'm nearly 60, and still kicking them out!!!

    I play in A-B leagues mostly and fill in in C and below when they don't have enough goalies. I had senior gear and those were clearance and barely survived... Had to explain to my wife over and over the difference between pro and senior... until she saw the quality difference and the vast contrast in my helmets and even the C/A unit. Now she's not mad about me buying custom passau gear that should last me 5-7 years

    I have a question for you. We are the same size in high, but what is your ATK/FTK? Mine is 29 but I cannot find any senior gear that is under 32 without being custom. What size pad do you wear?

    I've got pro skates and body armour. Some of the guys I play with can really rifle the puck so wanted to get something that would give as much protection as possible. The skates? Well I tried mid=level and I couldn't get comfortable in them so I got pro-level ones and, in spite of the cost, feel it was worth it.

    I started with mostly senior gear. As things break down, I upgrade to the pro level as my level of competition goes up. The level of protection really is pretty big, but unless you are playing against high level beer league or ex college guys... you really dont need it.

    I bought senior G4’s new for like $400 right after the G5’s came out. Bought used G4 pro blocker and catcher for $200. My biggest question when buying my first set was under garment. I know it’s personal to each player, but there really isn’t any resources that explain undergarments. So, for the noobs... #TT What undergarments are needed just starting out? Padded shirt? Player jock? (To go under your goalie jock/ gill) Hockey socks and garter, or sweat pants? (or my biggest waist of money) Anti-cut skate socks? Obviously, once you get out there, you get a better feeling of what you really need.

    Just go custom , it's actually cheaper the long run. And you can do your own mods to your gear

    Wrap holds up just fine, only one to know its wrapped is you, take time applying the wrap and it holds up great and looks just as good. Check out my channel, i wrapped my mask and the video is up there, either way its a preference and cost. Cheers🍻

    What exactly is a ‘pro return’? Did an actual pro wear and use it?

  • @VOGoalie

    @VOGoalie

    Typically a "Pro Return" is a piece of gear that.an NHL goalie tried out and didn't end up using in games so it was sent back. Usually they're in decent shape as the gear typically sees minimal practice ice time. "Game worn or Game Used" are typically gear that are sold by teams at the end of a season and are often heavily used and sought by collectors. All this not to be confused with "Bro Returns" which is all my extra old gear in my basement lol!

    Pro skates are my least favorite piece. Just to stiff of boat. I need a bit of flex in my boot. Midlevel was what I go to. But every thing else pro is the way to go for me.

    If you are just starting out, I’d suggest used pro level gear until you get an idea of what you like and what works for you. You can usually pick up high end gear that is only lightly used these days.

    Seniors don’t need pro gear unless you skate 4-5 times a week or you just have the $ im sick of beer league you tubers reviewing pro gear and they can’t butterfly slide without using a hand on the ice so they don’t fall over. How good is a review when it’s a low level player reviewing pro gear. 99%of us don’t need pro gear. Head protection is an exception but the best you can afford
