Ongoing petition to do the "Drunk Chefs remote control Sober Normals" here is why. 1. It would be an absolute blast and very funny. 2. It could be a chance to bring back James or poppy or a new guest chef. 3. It is SAFE the normals who would be cooking would be sober and in no way intoxicated. The chefs would be drunk giving instructions. 4. You can pluggy plug plug your Gin! Love you guys!

Yes, I totally agree with you! I once had a pinot noir with some goat's cheese and it literally killed the taste of both for me. It's not that they then tasted bad, but rather that I could taste almost nothing from either of them when paired together.

I totally agree, but lets take it up a notch. Mike and Jamie, who have some basic wine knowledge, don't know that this is what the episode will be about. As in, you sit them down and have different wine/food pairings. Some are designed to be good, some bad. They have to tell the difference, and why.

I love that Mike still was high-energy and genuinely learning, even though he doesn't really "do" wine. It's a nice reminder that it can be fun to learn more about different culinary topics without the pressure of feeling like it needs to then become part of daily life.
Would love to see this with beer pairings! So often people dismiss beers as if they are just the big lager brands we are familiar with in pubs and shops, but there's so much more to beer varieties and styles that people don't know about and it would be great to see a showcase of this! :D

Basically, they're not stuck using only the grapes from their region.. So a Bordeaux can't use grenache or mourvedre or shiraz because they don't grow there, same way a wine from the Rhone region can't use cabernet sauvignon that was grown in Bordeaux.. But a Vin de France wine can mix both and call it a day. So basically, regional wines give you more of a terroir feel, and broader appellations give more freedom to the winemaker to make something different (but you can also make cheap wine that way, because you can just buy whatever grapes and mix it all and ferment it, lots of boxed wines or wines that just say "table wine" are made this way.. You don't really know what's in it most of the time but usually people who buy those don't care about that information.

Lately, I have been leaning toward blends because that’s where winemakers are being able to put their creativity to work and show their brands’ innovative skills. Although I still love single varietal wines from well established houses, it’s become an adventure, and oftentimes a pleasure, to explore new trends and labels.
Fantastic episode. I love this woman. She provided concise, descriptive and clear information. Would love to see more of her. The food pairings were so mouth watering as well.

This was a great introduction to wines and I would absolutely love to learn more in future episodes. I`m much like Mike, I dont know a lot about wine and I primarily use wine in cooking, rather than drinking. I will try to use this knowledge going forward to look for types of wine to go with the meal for a better pairing. Also, I would love an episode like this regarding beer. And Christina was lovely, so plesant to listen to and learn from.
I've never been more jealous of the food served. Great job food team.
Great video. Two things I would have liked to have seen were 1. “Bad” or less than ideal pairings to see how they stacked up against the suggested pairing 2. The boys trying their suggested wine with the dish they recommended it for as well as the expert’s pick.
Hi (: I currently work in helath and social care. I was wondering if you guys have ever explored SALT assessments, an assessment often used to guide carers on what we can feed the clients we work with based on textures and them being able to eat and swallow the food. The assessments often limit food massively and ist hard to find many options to give our clients, there's only so many times someone wants to eat mash potatoes! I think it would be a really cool thing for you guys to research and come up with some creative and delicious options and ideas for those with very limited options (:

This is so great to see. As an ex-wine heavy bar manager, being able to see how quickly these guys picked it up was amazing, but it's also pointed that while they learned a bunch, they still have a ways go to. And that can be said about every phase of wine understanding. There's so much out there, it's incredible.

I work at a high end restaurant with a lot of expensive wines that are meant to go with the food- Unfortunately, I also have no interest or taste for wine, they all taste about the same and gross for me. It was really interesting to watch this with only my experience through osmosis- I got the answers to the challenge mostly correct, save for a couple of flavours I wouldn’t have noticed without tasting the food itself. (You got me with the Coriander+lemongrass! I still guessed a white wine would be best though.) I really appreciate the educated answer to the “”dumb”” questions Mike was asking! Our in house sommelier would never have such patience haha. I learnt a lot! Loving these more educational videos you’ve been doing, keep it up!

By the way, the game in the other vid that was mistakenly posted was great! Would love to see that played again. 👍🏻👍🏻
As someone who doesn't drink alcohol and knows hardly anything about it, I found this fascinating. Makes we want to think of how I can pair my food with variations on water. With ice or without, a lemon wedge or lime. :)
As a Retired Wine Buyer (8 years at Nieman-Marcus, 11 as Wine Director for a 32 Store Liquor/Wine Chain with 17 prior years before those as an Intern in Retail Wine Departments) calling 'Vin De France' Winemakers the "Artist of the Wine World" was not only a Slap in the face to literally Thousands of hard working Winemakers worldwide using their expertise to create their (KEY Word Here) UNIQUE 'Art in a Bottle,' but also thousands of other Wine Professional's and normal Wine Lovers that think your opinion is just 'slightly' biased and uninformed. Brilliant session. Thanks guys 😊
What a lovely selection. Now taste some South African wines too. Same grapes, different flavor profiles. It all depends on the terroir (soil conditions) and temperature ranges.
It's great that Mike enjoyed the wines despite not being a wine drinker at all, and was great at describing what he was tasting. I predict he will give wine a shot at home or in a restaurant now. I am not a beer drinker typically unless I am at a brewery with friends I would always get wine. However if my partner is having beer I would have a taste and there are so many great kinds brewed here in Ontario. Also ciders, spirits, and even sake. Also non-alcoholic options which are decent. And of course beautiful wineries where you can get a flight of what they have to offer to learn more. Funny in wine country you see groups that are staying at bed + breakfasts nearby biking around to tour the vineyards that are pretty close together so that everyone can partake for some fun without driving.
Thing is, the whole time I'm drinking wine I'm thinking, "I'd rather just have grape juice."

Fantastic episode- Christina is a perfect guest expert, and I loved her straightforward narrative. I would never have believed just how strong pairings could be until a Chef friend of mine catered a wine makers dinner. The winery in question had a very challenging desert wine, that frankly I thought was undrinkable - until he paired it with a grapefruit cheesecake, which was pretty horrible on its own. The two together were magic!

A number of years ago I used to go to dinners where they paired wine with food and it was interesting to taste wine with food that it ‘went with’ and food that it didn’t necessarily go with.
That was really interesting I’d like more videos on wine and how it made and how to pair etc ❤
Excellent video, more content like this please.
As someone who rarely drinks wine this is wasted on me, but I learnt something !
As an Australian who grew up with McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, & Coonawarra red wines (Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvingnon, etc.), hearing a Grenache/Mourvedre blend wine described as "really rich, indulgent, full bodied" made me chuckle. I highly recommend getting some big Australian, South African, or Californian wines (that have been cellared for at least 10-15 years) to get a lesson. "Vin de France" wines are, in my opinion, a tired/stale French wine-making industry desperately trying to catch up and compete with the other major wine-making countries that have been kicking French arse for 30 years. The French make some wonderful delicate wines, petite & pretty wines, that are excellent with delicate foods. But you have to go elsewhere to get properly full-bodied wines that are life experiences.
The guys really enjoyed the food. Christina was a delight, a proper lady.

yo i want a recipe for the haloumi and aubergine, that looked real good
Fantastic video!
Some of us normals think that wine pairings are bollocks. To test this assertion I propose the following test: Let Ben make a number of dishes, let each of the normals taste the dish with 3 different wines. One wine is a safe pairing, one is considered exceptionally good and one is considered exceptionally bad. Normals need to comment is the wine good? Does the wine make the dish better? Normals get a point for correctly identifying which wine is in each category. Ideally the same wine could be in different categories for different dishes
The most important thing to remember about food pairings is to go with a wine that you like over a wine that pairs well with the food. What I mean is.. if you don't like white wine, like, AT ALL, don't go for a white wine just because white goes better with fish, go with a lighter red wine, or a rosé. Or a white for red meat if you don't drink red wine. Or grapes variety. If you don't like sauvignon blancs 'cause they're too acidy or you don't like the herby citrusy flavours, just go for something else. If you go for a wine that pairs well with the food, if you don't like that wine, you won't enjoy the meal as much. Same if you shop the other way around "Oh I really like this red wine but don't eat red meat, but red wine = red meat, right? so I'll buy a steak despite not eating red meat" you won't enjoy the meal as much as if you had cooked something else. (Plus you'll probably burn the steak or overcook it if you never eat red meat :p)
