    There is a tool specifically made to install and remove that type of clip. Snap ring pliers make it insanely easy. I suspected the size selection is determined by the speed setting. 33 rpm = 12" record, 45 rpm = 7" record. All other combinations have to be manually cued. Turns out I was right. Some old autochangers worked that way too. The reason it rejects so easily is it's probably a velocity trip. It doesn't detect the position of the tone arm, like most other automatic mechanisms. Instead, it looks for the tone arm changing position more rapidly (the runout moves the arm much faster than it would playing audio). The buzz in the audio and when you touch the center spindle would probably be resolved if you grounded the unit regardless of whether the preamp is on or off.

    Correct on all counts, I'd say. Moving the tonearm manually on a velocity trip will usually trigger it, and that is what you see in the video. The design of the speed and size control is essentially lazy. I think Recordology should measure the speed with the tonearm on the record. The drag may not have as much effect as you think and the turntable may still be running fast.

    I agree. I think that mechanism is a cheap version of an old BSR mechanism, and the way the preamp board is just glued to the plinth is totally cheap.

    It's amazing and disappointing to see how so many modern turntables still cannot measure up to high-end vintage turntables or match their features. It was great to see this Pro-Ject Automat A1 demo to see what it could do and what its drawbacks were (while in contrast, other Pro-Ject models are fine), but it just makes me appreciate my Denon DP-45F direct-drive fully automatic microprocessor-controlled Quartz-locked turntable made in 1999 at a retail price of roughly $700 US (roughly $1,000 in Canadian dollars at that time) that I bought gently used on eBay for around $150 plus $50 shipping which has a light sensor to detect record size and buttons to switch the speed if needed, to lift the tone arm, to move the tone arm across the record, and to repeat the side of the record if desired. Anyway, there are pros and cons to both vintage and new turntables, but when one thinks of Pro-Ject as a brand, one has high expectations that were not met with the Automat A1. Thanks for the thorough review though, Record-ology.

    I like these German classic automatics. I own two that came from the same factory in Germany. They are a higher end chassis. I have a Thorens TD 103A and a Thorens TD 240-2. Thorens is no longer using this vendor, but the Rekkord brand will now be imported and Pro-Ject will likely have more models from this line. If you're curious what a high end model from this factory looks like check out my Thorens TD 103A review.

    I appreciate this review, as I had considered buying this sight unseen. It definitely doesn't convey the level of refinement I'd expect from a $500 Pro-Ject, though a few minor improvements could make a major difference. I hope they continue development of the concept, and come out with a nicer version 2.0.

    Looks like It's a re-badge THORENS TD 158 - I guessing the company that purchased Thorens contracted this out in the current German factory (it can be found under obsolete devices on the Thorens website). Anyone would be WAY better off buying a properly functioning used DD Technics fully auto - or semi auto at that price!.

    Actually, the Thorens TD 158 uses the same arm, but a better, slightly larger floating chassis with a rotating spindle. It is used on the more expensive Fehrenbacher produced tables. I own a Thorens TD 240-2 and a 103 A, and they both use the better chassis. I also had a TD 158 for a while, and it had the better chassis with this arm. The control panel on the right is how you can tell without pulling the platter. Unless Pro-Ject did something special here, this has a fixed spindle and is based on the old bottom of the barrel Dual CS 415-2.

    There are a couple of quibbles about this TT. I have had one for a year and the issues you mentioned are very slight. I can elaborate if you wish. This TT is well worth the price especially if you swap the stylus to a 30. It needs the ground wire connected. You have an early sample as the fit and finish is much better on my unit. Snap ring pliers for the clip, 3 seconds to remove it.

    You may be able to sand that and then re-apply spray paint. Of course, be careful not to mess up the balance of the platter. For a Pro-ject table, I can't say I am terribly impressed with that unit, especially for the price. That Fluance (R85 if I recall?) table that was reviewed a little while looked like a much nicer turn table.

    That speed sensor for automatic is just like the Garrard record changer where it has two 33 1/3 speed one for 12 inch and one for 7 inch. A 45rpm is assumed to be 7 inch and 78rpm is 10. That is a poor assumption especially when in UK they have more 12 inch 45rpm records than the US and with the new half-speed masters there are that play at 45rpm, this isn't a good buy.

    Thank you for your heart! I´ll give you one too! But, in the case of this TT, I must mention, that although it may be mediocre, it isn´t bad at all! For old Geezers with shaking hands like me, it´s a perfect Turntable. And you can upgrade the Cardridge quite well. A Nagaoka 110 fits properly, and the AT95ies with all the available needles are also a great upgrade as well. My two Duals of the same buld, I pimped them with silverplated Tonearm cables! I bought them used for €40,- each, and they had an issue with the tonearmcables. So I took the chance to upgrade to high-end stuff. I do this with all of my Turntables, so it´s not a big deal to me. I have ten working TTs overall, and 4 of them are set up for playing in my system. Two are Some Unitra GS 531 those that have a high-end tonearm, and a metal plinth! I damped the plinths with MDF inlets and covered them with pure fine leather in red, and the other one on black. To be ridiculous, I invested more than I paid for them, but it was worth it. They are high-end Turntables now, and solid and no noise at all. And good looking too. But to come back to Project TT here: It is in fact a proper Turntable for people with tremor issues, and way better than any crosley lol. Fitted with a proper Cardridge, and they will sound really good too. Can I recommend the Project to buy? Absolutely yes! Is a Fluance RT85 the better choice? Absolutely yes too. But as I say, if one has a tremor, he makes a good buy with the project!

    The design looks like a pre-existing design from the late 1970's to early 1980's. Those switches look familiar. In any case, what was Pro-Ject thinking? I doubt they made this on their own.

    A couple of points that should be addressed or made more clear for future review improvements: 1- Is the counter weight adjustable? How? 2- Is the antiskate adjustable? How? 3- Is raking angle adjustable? How? Although this table probably doesn't have it, as all lower quality table. 4- AC synchronous motors have buzz in them. Reversing the plug polarity may fix it. They need anti vibration couplings. Does it transmit to the stylus? 5- Need plinth tapping test to gauge noise transfer to stylus. 6- C ring is your friend, not enemy. You probably have a c ring plier by now. If not, there are other ways to remove/install c rings without damages... needle nose pliers, fine tip screw driver for prying (use the spindle as lever). 7- Is the record run out pickup position adjustable? How?

    I do like that it has a matte finish, but I think I'd disassemble one and give it a re-spray in something like a khaki so dust wasn't so visible on it as I think even with a rattle can, I could give it a better paint job than what it has now. That's the one thing I don't care for about black is it shows EVERYTHING. Unfortunately my receiver setup and all the components are in black except for my white Pioneer turntable, lol. I also wish that rcord player companies could go back to putting a 10 cent diode and a dropping resistor INSIDE the chassis to convert the household AC to DC instead of all the bulky wall wart power packs that always manage to partially block any other outlets no matter whether they're wall outlets, or power strips.

    22:09 I wonder why there is a buzz when presumably you attached the ground wire to a grounding post on one of those powered speakers? Is it possible that this turntable model is not designed for direct hookup to powered speakers, but may have no buzz if attached to phono inputs and a grounding post on a regular receiver or amp? That would be odd indeed. Hmmm.

  • @a0ch

    @a0ch

    4 ай бұрын

    Not sure if you are still interested, but I got this player recently and had the buzz issue due to using the phono-preamp and connecting to my active speakers. The buzz was there even after connecting the grounding wire onto one of the screws on my speakers. Also, touching any part on the player that was metallic, e.g. the pin in the middle of the record, created more noise. I only managed to get rid of it by buying Pro-ject's high power grounded power supply AND connecting the grounding wire on one of the screws. Now touching parts on the player makes no difference. Just leaving this here in case anyone has a similar issue. I truly considered returning the player and getting an Audio Technica one (in fact I did return 2 units, 1 because I thought the buzzing must be a defect of the unit, 2 because the power supply was broken), but I really like the specific automatic mechanism with the levers, although I do know it is an older Dual mechanism they built in there. And the sound is so warm and lovely.

  • @georgebliss964
    @georgebliss964 Жыл бұрын

    Shockingly bad, but at least they can't cock up the cartridge. The buzz is down to the RIAA preamp design in combination with the cheap switch mode power supply, or possibly just the power supply. Worth trying a linear wall wart or batteries to see what happens.

    I will start out to say I am, like you, a turntable fanatic who works for a company that offers returned, slightly scratched units very cheap to employees, so it has given me the opportunity to test out a very wide variety of turntables mainly out of nothing more than idle curiosity. I look at your review after I have purchased, however not received my Pro-Ject Automat not so much to see if I made the right decision, but more to see what I am in store for. I currently own a several Pro-Ject turntables including a Debut Carbon Evo, a T1 SB and a T1 SB that had come in with a bent arm around the same time another Debut Carbon Evo came in with a pretty seriously damaged plinth, thus the T1 SB Carbon Evo was born. Of course I own plenty of other units from Audio Technica, Technics, JVC, Pioneer, Philips and Music Hall. I think about 20 last count. Looking at the unit in your review one thing that was very noticeable it that it really does not look anything like any other Pro-Ject turntable in their line up and the reason for that is Pro-Ject did not build this one as it is built by a German company called Rekkord and sold under the model Rekkord F-100 which is their entry level deck. In fact the only differences between the Rekkord and the Pro-Ject is there is a better cartridge as the F-100 comes with a AT-3600L mounted to it (which seems odd as that tracks MUCH heavier then an Ortofon OM-10) amd Pro-Ject has a black platter where the Rekkord platter is a natural finish. Of course in normal Pro-Ject fashion, they removed all of the Rekkord badging and replaced with nothing, except on the dust cover. Regardless I am still looking forward to playing with it and while, no I don't think it is worth $500.00 (especially since the Rekkord version is $369, albeit with a cheaper cartridge), I paid about the cost (if not a little less) than I would have for the Ortofon OM-10 alone, so if I hate it, I'll just mount the cartridge on one of my other turntables.

    A couple of weeks ago, I picked up for $20 a 1980s-vintage Modular Component Systems (J.C. Penney house brand) semi-automatic turntable with a straight tonearm and a P-mount cartridge. I had to clean it up, replace the belt, and replace the cartridge. (Well, the cartridge is probably fine; but it was easier to install a P-mount cartridge that I had sitting around that I know is good.) The old MCS turntable sounds great. And it doesn't look half as cheap as that danged Pro-Ject. Pro-Ject should be ashamed.

    First off, I'm really happy to see new automatics being made again and not just the ultra cheap ones. Whilst this isn't for me and I'd probably just go for a vintage turntable (that needs fixing), this is a great alternative for those who want to get into vinyl. It's weird how "audiophiles" are still spout uninformed BS on forums saying that an automatic mechanism will influence the sound. One of the best thing about automatics is that most of them mute completely when the auto mechanism is working. Second, the c-clip needs a special needle nose plier and shouldn't be that difficult to remove with the right tools. Could they have done it differently? probably, but this isn't the worst I've come across. I wouldn't pay $500 for this. At that price point I can get a really nice vintage auto turntable. Not only that, but at $500 I'm expecting a replaceable headshell and pitch controls

    The Crosley Stack-O-Matic was a BSR auto changer clone made up to around 2010. To many plastic parts to wear out and mess with the operation. Up to around the mid 1970s, most of the mechanical parts were metal. This is why you can clean and lube a vintage turntable and it will play like it was new. Auto indexing features were dropped in the late 1960s in favour of auto repeat.

    well i have seen this on if i remember correctly : cheap audio man : channel he was not fond of the plastic switches and on the start i noticed when you engaged it it is supposed to move when it finishes cycling but it did not that is why the unit did it twice on each speed the switch is sticking it could be a defect or it was a return i noticed that when you removed platter there was the outline of platter ,to me it means that this was used and returned and may have gotten sent to stock by mistake ,a lot of the Dual tt's when the lub is getting dried up it may stick when you operate the unit i had a Dual do that to me everytime till i cleaned out the switch mechanism and it was fine , for 500.00 dollars it is too much i do not like the speed set up for 45 and 33 to me it looks like they were cutting corners for that much money,i know some older Garrards did that and other Dual TT's you had to if it was 45 but a 12 inch it was done manually i can buy 2 used old turntables fully automatic and it would have very little plastic in it and it would be able to tell what size record to play with a few minor adjustments ,i am glad that some of these co are starting to see the benefit of automatic tt ,but i think before they design a automatic tt they should at least find a decent old automatic tt and study them !!!!! a little more ,i do not minfd the plastic switches if they are not going to charge 500 bucks for this one JRo

    If it was direct drive you wouldn't have to take the platter off, further more I have both a belt drive Thorens and a direct drive Technics and the direct drive is much quieter than the belt turntable. My Thorens belt has been replaced 3 times at $30 a piece so the heck with belt drive.

    It is based on a 90's era Dual turntable and is a very good product. I owned the near-identical Dual CS415-2 in the late 90's, and while it lacked adjustable counterweight etc, it was still a solid performer. Dual turntables tend to cost at least double of what they used to, so this one is going to cost also.

    God Bless this channel for exposing this product for what it is: bait! Also, I can't be the only one who thinks this looks A LOT like the P-Mount, entry-level Technics units from the 1980s. You may not be able to fit those old Technics with a 1/2-inch cart, but they are built A LOT better, are WAY simpler to service, and have stood the test of time! You can hunt your local Craiglist and find a serviceable unit for close to $100, spend another $100 on a mat, a belt, and a new cart, and it would still be HALF of what you'd pay for this!

    Ya, need to get you a set of snap ring pliers like at Lowe’s or an auto parts store. As for turntable I’d send it back ! Not worth anywhere close to 500.00 ! It lacks too many features it should have had for that price. No adjustable counter weight or even a removable head shell. 😒

    Lege eine 7" 33er Platte auf, stell die Drehzahl auf 45! Wenn der Tonarm abgesetzt hat, stell die Drehzahl auf 33! Bei 12" 45er umgekehrt! Ich wollte diesen Pro-Ject A1 kaufen und meinen 1977er WEGA P 550 ersetzen. Aber die dünnen Plastikhebel sehen wenig vertrauenserweckend aus! Sie können bestimmt brechen! Ausserdem kann ich den WEGA bei geschlossener Staubschutzhaube bedienen! Es beschämt mich, das dieser miserable Pro-Ject A1 "Made in Germany" sein soll!

    Def not a 500 dollar turntable. except for the cartage, its very mediocre. cant disconnect the rca cables, the switch for the pre-amp is in a weird place and the snap ring to get to it requires the correct tool or you scratch up the platter bad. not impressive. I would not give up my audio technica for this. such a shame, they have work to do on it. great honest review..

    I could get that clip off, or back on, in seconds with something called "snap ring pliers". The whole product looks cheap and crummy. Really, if you want a respectable piece of equipment, $500 isn't going to get you close. In the mid-1970s, a Dual 1229Q would have set you back about $250, equivalent to $1510 in 2022.

    I am so sorry for you. The finish is cheap, the knobs and switchs are cheapo, the specs disappoint, the head shell is fixed, the platter is stupidly fastened, paint, small spots, dull black. Top fail: the counterintuitive arm lift operation. Only positive I can think of is that the width is 430mm, so compatible with a lot of my vintage stereo equipment. But hey, few people have that kind of equipment these days, considering the SONOS and streaming culture. I have bought a Project phono preamp a last year. I sent it back, it was disappointing. No Projects for me. That is a pity, considering that it is built in Europe.

    This TT isn´t a Project Product. Its a plain and simple clone of an 1990ies Dual CS 415. Also sold as Grundig TT... The technic isn´t that bad, but the Tonearm is crap! I own 2 of those old ones, and both of them are .... mediocre Sort of turntables...

    Just the same miserable manufacturing quality the Fehrenbacher factory had been churning out for the last years of the life of the original Dual CS models. Might have been the reason why they lost the license for branding their output 'Dual' (just a guess).
