Retention is a real problem in the Navy right now, most of these fine people full of pride will have left the service within 5 years if not before. I remember it well.

Brilliant, great to see William supporting the Navy, ex myself.

I noticed from some other coverage of this that the Prince of Wales' uniform had the rank cuffs of a commodore. If I understand correctly, his current service rank (in all three branches) is that equivalent to a naval commander (or OF-4). So just curious what the protocols are, for example, is the commodore rank here attached to an honorary military appointment apart from his actual service rank? Thank you.

Hi Robert. Prince William is the Commodore-in-Chief of the Submarine Service, and it was in this capacity that he was attending the parade today and so wore said uniform. Usually he would be in the uniform of a Commander for Royal Navy functions but as he was attending in the aforementioned role he wasn't.

Prince William wasn't there out of privilege. He served for 8 years in all three Services. The Royals work, and work under pressure. Even on this occasion he had both cameras and high expectations directed at him. I'll warrant that the only privilege he would acknowledge is the privilege of being asked to take the salute for those who passed out at the Royal Naval College.

@pepperroni6252 British soldiers are meant to salute with they're left hands, and please don't try to contradict me. I used to live next door to The Sargent Major of The Household Cavalry. The reason for this is that it stops police informants from joining our army (in-com-pet-ents). It was not funny the first time that they saluted incorrectly, and it is still not funny now.
