5 Steps AKA Five Steps - Roll 1 (1960-1969)

Great film about the training of officer cadets in the Royal Navy.
Title reads: "5 Steps - Towards a Commission in The Royal Navy".
Number 1 - Officer candidates wearing civvies arrive on submarine in dock. They are shown around the sub by an officer and ask questions about how things operate. The different candidates show different characteristics. VS of their Officer testing - first in the gym where they take part in a team building exercise against the clock. Second they face an interview with Admiralty Officials. The questions appear quite tough. (Nice sequence as one candidate runs onto station and misses his train home). The interviewing panel discuss the candidates. The candidate who fears his is unlikely to do well is the one they like best.
Number 2 - VS at Dartmouth Naval College. Sequence of room inspection showing how tough it is. Drill training. Gym and PT training. Sailing training. Large inspection. Rowing training. More Physical Training.
Number 3 - Sailing exercise on larger boats. Learning about radar. Being shown tropical uniforms. Flag signalling. Navigation in helicopters. Drill training. VS cadets in their dorm - trying to sleep. Sailing race between cadets. Hiking exercise on Dartmoor. One cadet breaks off from his group to help lost hikers. He saves them from a night on the moor.
The second roll is on PM2759.

A sea cadet ought to know what type of ships the RN had.

Very interesting video…I think that idea was to keep things a little bit light-hearted, show the Admiralty board, Dartmouth, at-sea experience, etc…And, showing at the end there’s the award of being officer of the watch aboard a man o’ war. I really enjoy these old RN videos, and hope to see more of them!
