PRIMITIVE TECHNOLOGY | PORCUPINE Cooked in UNDERGROUND Earth Hangi! | ASMR (Silent)
Ойын-сауық
We cook a porcupine using primitive technology in an underground earth oven, or hangi. This is a demonstration in primitive cooking as done by our early ancestors. We pluck the porcupine of all it's quills then wrap it up in burdock before lowering it into the earth to cook overnight. We combine our wild game with other wild foods including leeks, pestled corn meal, raspberries and maple syrup. My Gear (Shop and Support): www.fowlersmakeryandmischief....
FULL PLAYLIST: • Caveman In The Woods |...
In this epic episode Jeremy and I prepare a porcupine in a very traditional way. Learn how to pluck, singe and scrape off the quills and hair. We then examine how to cook using a primitive earth oven by covering it with white hot hot rocks and coals and cover overnight with dirt to steam and bake.
This entire series is about catch n cook!
Watch and find out how well it cooked and whether this traditional famine food is palatable. We discuss porcupine as a "survival food" and how it was traditionally used.
Also on the menu is crushed cow corn in a traditional mortar and pestle combined with egg and fresh strawberries and blueberries with farmed raised pork fat, cooked over fire as a corn meal.
Thanks to Adam Craig Outdoors for supplying us with a porcupine, filming it, and then letting me use the footage!

I wish the underground oven would have worked a little bit better. If you do this again do you think that you should also put hot rocks on top or does that defeat the purpose. All around great vido

No hate for the silent vid but seems to me that non english speakers would prefer it with the explanations and commentary. I know when I watch videos in other languages I'm able to still understand parts of it just because of the different tones and such. Plus it's kind of entertaining. That said, it's your video do it however you like and don't let haters get to you. I love your videos, keep it up!

For this method to work, half the rocks go under, place the meat and the the other half goes on top. No coal goes inside the hole because it will just stop burning in minutes and only be an obstacle there. The hot coal goes on top after you have covered it all with dirt. I have witnessed this in Papua New Guinea. Love your channel man! Fowler brought me here.
They think 10 times before taking a bite. It seems both of them are scared of eating that thing.

Whilst trekking in Peru, our guides cooked what was basically the whole skeleton of a fresh slaughtered goat with some meat on the bones just like this. It had been bouncing around in a sealed tub on the back of a horse for 3 days, also in the tub was whole cloves of garlic plus losts of other root vegetables, it was one of the best meals I have ever eaten.

Next time, you should probably put a damp cloth on top of the food wrapped up in leaves, before you bury it. To reduce getting any dirt on any of the food.
Best part of that meal was the dessert 😂
Dude, so nice to see these traditional ways of preparing meat! In Finland the out come is called "rosvopaisti", I guess "robber's meat" is a direct translation. Process is very similar, I was thought to do it a slightly different way (I'm excluding your proper way of wrapping the meat with real leafs, I have used parchment paper + tin foil ): dig a hole, put stones in the hole and make a fire on top of the stones to heat them up (same thing as you guys did but in a different way). Then put the wrapped meat in the hole, cover it up and build a new fire on top to keep the heat high enough. Depending the size of the meat, keep it in for long enough so that it's really like pulled pork when ready. I've done 2kg chunks for 10 hours, over night would be even better. Sooo good when ready. Huge fan of your channel!

That's exactly what we do in New Zealand build a fire in the whole with the stones or iron placed throughout the wood structure and burnt for a few hours, when it's all down to ash we put water on the stones to make steam, we then place our food in wire baskets cover that with wet potato sacks cover with big leaves and then the dirt. Which we call hangi 😊

Hangi (ground oven) is traditional Maori way of cooking, from New Zealand, meat should fall of the bone when cooked, ground looks really damp there, may be next time light the fire in the whole to help dry the ground out, oven will stay hotter longer.. Cheers from NZ👍

The Batu Bakar tradition is generally carried out by inland / mountain tribes, such as in the Baliem Valley, Paniai, Nabire, Papua, Indonesia. It is called Batu Bakar because the stone is really burned to a blazing heat, then stacked on top of the food to be cooked.
