Jiang Guonan has been teaching at a rural primary school in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangxi for 42 years. With many pupils and teachers leaving for China’s big cities, student Jiang Haotian has become the only remaining child at his school. He’s still getting an education, however. Guonan has decided to stay and teach the seven-year-old to help him escape poverty, according to state media.

Honestly I find it incredibly depressing. The kid is 8 years old and doesn't have a single other kid his age to be around. Kids are supposed to be around other kids. Both he and the teacher are almost certainly poor given the fact that 1. they live in rural China and 2. everyone else has already left for the city. The little kid doesn't even get to see his parents because they need to live somewhere else to make ends meet. The story is supposed to be wholesome, but honestly it just makes me sad.

@@TheCrazyCrafter98817 A lot of teachers do start off having the same ideas and passions as this man. Imagine working at a school with little to no resources, using books from the year 2000, students coming to school with traumatic backgrounds, no support from parents or the district, over crowding in classrooms (imagine trying to teach 30 kindergartners in a small classroom with no windows), always short staffed because no one is rushing to teach in public schools, no counselors to address students’ mental health, no social workers, and no nurses. There are schools who don’t even have gyms. Schools that are infested with bugs and rodents. Teachers having to spend what little income they have on bare essentials for kids. There are many teachers who have to work more than one job just to make end’s meet. There is a huge shortage on teachers in the US. They have to incentivize young college graduates with things like “we’ll pay for your grad school!” Or “we’ll pay off your student loans!” Then those same folks teach for 5 years and leave for the same reasons I mentioned. Teaching is HARD, and our teachers really don’t get enough credit

Not sure about the poverty part. His parents are working in the city far away from home. The school looks decent for a remote area. The building isn’t bad at all. Even got its basketball court. There are far poorer areas. I have seen video of classroom in a cave. Kids have to climb mountains without roads to attend school.
