In China’s southwestern Yunnan province, two-year-old Haoyang may only have a few months to live because he suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Menkes syndrome. In a desperate effort to save his dying son, Xu Wei has assembled a home laboratory to try and create a treatment for his child. The disease is incurable, and an experimental drug that could help ease his son’s symptoms is not available in China. Xu says he was left with no choice but to teach himself to recreate the drug.

Dude as a former molecular biologist, this guy is nothing short of a genius. The type of lab work he was doing can be difficult even for someone with a master’s degree, but he achieved it in a meager SIX MONTHS from secondary school level with his own equipments! After he finishes taking care of his son, he definitely should get a formal education in that field, because he is truly gifted.

The fact that you didn't get that in the first place already lets me know that you are the same as these other people. I never once mentioned I knew the facts of this video here. Reminded me of Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain. Wasn’t the biggest fan of it but it was a compelling film nonetheless. It’s about a man trying to desperately find a cure his wife’s cancer himself, that’s his life’s work, until she dies. And he has these visions of his ancestors, of him in another life where similar tragedy happens. Until his wife inevitably dies, and he comes at peace with the fact that it’s too late, and he should have spent more of time with her instead of curing her. Not that similar to the movie but close enough. I do hope for the best for him and his son.

However, given the fact that he's ventured out and learned enough pertinent things in biology and chemistry to try and engineer a cure for his son's genetic disease, constraining his education level to that of being secondary school level and his lack of chemistry knowledge at the time of synthesizing said formula is incorrect. Learning and mastery isn't mutually exclusive with formal schooling, and you often consolidate the majority of your actual education through your work/career.

It's pretty risque though and not something that I think should be condoned. His treatment hasn't even been confirmed successful and with only 6 weeks of creation with such a short test on rabbits, there's so many possibilities that aren't accounted for. I wish him the best, but medicine is not something to be taken lightly and casually made by just anyone. From the lack of proper testing, the production of the medicine in a gym, and the lack of experience, there is so much possibility for error. At least with this guy he has the funding for top of the line equipment. If an average person tried doing this then there's a 95% chance that they just end up producing something terrible to be injected into a body.
