I remember going to see Billy Elliot with my soon to be Irish wife, a few of her cousins and their roommates. I was the only male and I was the only American. It was a late showing so it got out around midnight. We were all silent as we walked across the parking lot to our cars, when all of a sudden one of the roommates said "Fucking Margret Thatcher". The movie really stared up some memories for them about the coal strike as well has the Troubles.

Let's hope that things continue to move forward but are not forgotten. Regarding the original movie of Hairspray, even though it has a man protraying a females character, it is not LBGTQ+ themed, but is still worth a watch.

20:43 Mark Ashton used to work at the gay switchboard. One guy he interviewed for a job there said he realised halfway through eh was flirting with him - asking him about clubs and stuff like that. I don't know whether or not Mike was in love with Mark like he was in the movie - but from what I remember of what I've read about him, I get the feeling that every second man who knew Mark was in love with him. The song played at the end - For A Friend. While it is or can be used as a tribute for anyone who's lost anyone (particularly to AIDS), I'm pretty sure it was written for Mark. Apparently when he died they all came back - the miners from Wales, with the band and the Banners to give him a full send-off. Rumour has it there are still some places in Wales where they talk about him like he was Joan of Arc.

25:33 Margaret Tatcher's government introduced 'Section 28' - a law that banned "the promotion of homosexuality by local authorities". It was in effect from 1988-2000 in Scotland and from 1988-2003 in England and Wales. A lot of student support groups for LGBT's had to close down because of it. To be specific, Section 28: "stated that a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship"." And people complain "we can't say anything"/"everyone's so sensitive" now.

I'm so glad you loved this movie, Ashleigh! The Miners' Strike was a major cultural battle in the 80s - basically, they were the most powerful union in the country, they'd brought down the previous government and because most power stations ran on coal, previous strikes had reduced the factories to working three days a week and left people sitting in the dark. Thatcher decided to confront them head-on, and ended up closing down most of the mines, and it split Britain down the middle, so she would regularly top the polls of both most admired and most hated public figures. At the same time, the intolerance to homosexuality shown here was real - the Elton John reference is hilarious because he was so far in the closet he actually got married around that time. Homosexuality was only legalised in the UK 18 years before this movie was set, and as the movie said, the age of consent was 21 (it has now been reduced to 16 to match the heterosexual figure). I was at school then, and calling someone gay was a serious insult, none of the 1000 boys in my school would have dreamed of coming out. Things have changed so much in 40 years, though they're still far from perfect. It's a lovely story but also the serious acting talent on display is amazing - you spotted Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge), but Bill Nighy (Cliff) was Rufus Scrimgeour in the Potterverse, and was also in all 3 "Cornetto" movies [Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and World's End], Love Actually and About Time. Also, I know you've talked about watching the Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock - which you definitely should - and Andrew Scott (Gethin) was the breakout star from that as Moriarty. Anyway, thank you for working so hard to get your head around the British references: it was a joy, as your videos always are!

You could see in Ashley's reactions at time the disbelieve at the bigotry which was a fairly mildly portrayed in the movie. I had two friends that died from it. One was straight and one was gay. My gay friend was like Joe (Bromley) and Gethin was shunned by his family and basically never spoke to him again. When he died they did not even have an obituary. As a note about this in the film: When Hefina called to thank Jonathan for the Christmas card and winds up talking on the phone with Gethin, he is standing beside a bunch of photos of friends that died of AIDS.

I knew, you would like this, Ashleigh! One of my favourite movies. *Solidarity* sure is a pretty powerful thing - IF it gets used. The LGSM recognized that the authorities/the police had switched from oppressing one easy target _(the L+G community)_ to oppressing another easy target _(the striking miners)_ - sanctioned by the government lead by "the iron lady", Margaret Thatcher. And instead of enjoying that new _(time-limited)_ freedom, they decided to show solidarity and support "the new target" of a restrictive government. Just imagine, everyone, what we could achieve, if we would follow their example and stood together, shoulder to shoulder, against a common foe, instead of tearing each other apart, like "they" want us to.

Some are real, some are based on real with slightly different names (I think), Bromley is an original character - sort of a link between the audience and the film characters because they're both new to the group, and a stand in for everyone just coming out of the closet or finding the courage to come out of the closet.

I'd recommend the 1999 animated comedy South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut for its 25th anniversary, if that's OKay? It's one of the funniest comedies I've seen. It completely goes with Trey Parker and Matt Stones outrageous humor but also good commentary on themes of censorship, scapegoating, and parents refusing to talk to their children. I love that it also kinda makes fun of Disney movies and even the controversies surrounding South Park itself. It's one of the best comedy movies ever and one of the best musicals. Every song is an insanely catchy bop. It's just a great, fun time and a good example of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's humor really working 🙂

Miner's strike - huge, went on for a year. There are still families in pit towns torn apart by it. Miners starved, fighting for their livelihoods. There were battles between the police and the pickets. Meanwhile, Pride in London had been going since the 70s, but 84 was the height of the Aids epidemic fear - nobody really understood it and it was considered a 'gay disease'. You could not admit to being gay if you lived where I grew up. I can clearly remember having a stand up row where my uncle told me he'd hit me, because I objected to him saying gay people deserved aids. The age of consent for gay men was 21. Technically there never was one for lesbians, though under 16 would have been assault. And it was 16 for straight people. It wasn't till 2000 that the age of consent was made 16 across the board. Mary Whitehouse was a Christian evangelist bigot, who wanted to 'clean up' TV. TV bosses were afraid of her, but if you were under 40 in the 80s she was a figure of ridicule. The miners' galas, and the picnics, and the marches still happen, even though all the pits have now closed.

Spliff-ette.... Spliff. You usually need an Henry ( the eight ) and a packet of rolling skins. A Spliff is slang for a joint, devils lettuce, I imagine a Spliff-ette is a small single skin ( cigarette paper ). Whereas a proper joint can utilise up to 12 skins ( papers ) and are often called a "Camberwell carrot", because, obviously, they were invented in Camberwell. Apparently, I'm not an expert, honest. 😁

Most reactors are from the US. And believe it or not - many don't watch movies from the UK (not to mention any even more "foreign" movies). Has a lot to do with actor recognition, I believe. The US market prefers their own actors. That's also why so many foreign films get US remakes.

To add a bit more context to what's going on at this time; the UK, like every other major developed economy, was built on a lot of old fashioned ideas. A MAJOR part of the economy is PRODUCING goods. Unions were the default, and they were VERY powerful. Politically the UK tends to swing between what's considered the LEFT, in Labour, and the RIGHT, in the Conservatives (also known as the Tories). The 70's had two Labour terms back-to-back, leading to LOTS of unions across LOTS of sectors going out on strike in support of ANOTHER union. Some were more militant than others. Some would be looking for excuses to pull a fast strike, where they just walk off the job. Public services like Bin Collection fell apart, leading to the Winter Of Discontent, which sealed Labour's fate in the next General Election. Labour were the PARTY OF THE UNIONS, and of the 1%. In the 1978 General Election, Conservative Margaret Thatcher won a landslide on a platform of "getting the unions under control, and getting Britain moving again". She was the UK's 1st Female PM. She had more balls than the Men in her cabinet. She laid waste to the various workers rights protections, giving employers much more power and freedom to exploit workers. The UK Police were "no nonsense" when it comes to Policing protests, strikes and public order offences. There was a LOT of Police provocation, and a lot of power trips. Minor unrest was widespread, with all these communities being hotbeds. She 100% bought into the "greed is good" view of the world, mirroring Reagan in the US. She Privatised the UK's Public Services, and Public Housing stock. They got a HUGE windfall of revenue, but used it to fund HUGE tax cuts for the 1%. The Conservatives are the PARTY OF THE ELITES. If they'd reinvested that revenue instead, back into those communities, to build LOTS more Council homes, Schools, Hospitals etc then history would have been very different.
