Cameron Drake's speech in the Oscars was based on Tom Hanks' acceptance speech when he won the Oscar for Philadelphia. Tom Hanks consulted his own teacher before the speech and asked his permission, but Frank Oz thought, well, what if he hadn't? And that became the premise of this movie.

One of the biggest shocks in this film was seeing Tom Selleck without his moustache. It was his signature look, he'd had it for decades. He was a big TV star with a very "man's man" image, so this was a real breakout role for him. The really funny thing about him taking the moustache off is that moustaches like that had become a huge gay image thing in the 70's. Any other actor with that kind of image would have _added_ one to look gay, but he had to take it off. The gay stereotypes were already starting to wear thin by the 90's, as were many of the tropes in this film. That was the point - it was a parody of the ideas people had about gay men (limp wrists, liking Broadway and disco, being "artistic"), pointing to how outmoded it all was as acceptance was slowly starting to creep into American culture. We still weren't there yet, but Hollywood was loosening up some. So after a spate of films about AIDS and homophobia (like "Philadephia", "Boys Don't Cry" and "It's My Party"), we started getting a few films that went past that and were about "let's just drop the hate thing, it's getting old". Some people didn't like this film because of all the tropes, but poking fun at them was the whole point.

This movie made me nearly black out from laughing so hard the first time I saw it. It really, seriously, used to be like this movie in terms of jobs and crap back in the 90s. If there were ANY kind of whispers or rumors at all, you would never ever get hired unless that particular place was an ally or just didn't care if it faced a lot of backlash. In my teeny tiny small ass town in my state, my mom was a badass hair stylist and was very very popular. Back in the early 90s she would stay after hours when it was dark to help out crossdressers and drag queens with like two of her co-workers because they felt it was the only time it was safe for them to come in. Everyone knows a salon is a massive gossip mill, and if anyone knew their secret not only would they be tortured socially, but professionally speaking they wouldn't have jobs anymore. Sexual orientation was not a legitimate discrimination back then. Even in my small town, it's STILL omitted from anti discrimination clauses. We have really taken a lot of steps forward, but we are still so damn backwards we see our asses when we look down.

A Star is Born has the unique distinction of having been made 4 times and generally being considered really good all 4 times. Each time they made it, it was redone for the current generation with changes that were important, but without losing the basic core of what made the story good. And all 4 were both well received at the time and have held up over the years.

I love Kevin Kline! FYI, he's been married to Pheobe Cates, who you saw in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", for like 35 years. He's been in lots of great stuff, but a couple of my favorites, are actually both Lawrence Kasdan flicks. Not sure how familiar you are with that name yet, but he is a writer/director that wrote a couple of the original Star Wars movies, and has had many successful films of his own. "Silverado" is an 80s western with Kevin Kline among a great ensemble cast, that he and his brother wrote as a nostalgic homage to the Hollywood Westerns that they grew up on as children, but had basically died out by then. A real Fun watch. The second is one of my two favorite romcoms that involve European travel, called "French Kiss" with Meg Ryan, who was the queen of romcoms at the time. Btw, the other one is "Only You" with Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei. Also, another good Tom Selleck flick is another western from the 90s called "Quigley Down Under", about an American cowboy that goes to Australia. Oh, and "A Star Is Born" was originally a movie from the 30s, and had been redone in the 50s, 70s, and the one you know with Lady Gaga and Bradly Cooper. The 70s one starred Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. And, did you say that you don't know Paul Newman?
