Part of the joke about Wanda's language fetish is that Otto's "Italian" is just reciting restaurant menu items. He does not speak Italian at all.

Respectfully... if Kevin's Kline's Best Supporting Actor Oscar Winning performance of Otto here was played as a "better" character... the movie would have only been half as funny. You aren't supposed to like him.

Somehow you seem to have missed a big part of Ken's character. He wasn't trying to kill the dogs, he just kept missing the old lady and it hurt him every time a poor little doggy accidentally died.

The one that got me was when Ken was trying to name the hotel: "The Kaaaaahhhh..." That's why it was so funny when it rolled out of his mouth like nothing, and he got that surprised look on his face. :)

Michael Palin made the film for me. Even watching this in clips, he literally had me in tears. I just love Palin....

Otto was my favorite character in this movie, and one of my favorite movie characters of all time! Kevin Kline played the part masterfully and hysterically. The rest of the cast was excellent of course, but to me, Kevin Kline made this movie.

Kevin Kline is such an underrated actor, I don’t know why he wasn’t a bigger star. And Jamie Lee Curtis is gorgeous even now, such a beautiful, classy woman.

Kevin Kline won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and the film was nominated for two more: Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

I think that's a very available film to her. It's a straightforward movie with a heart. It's hopeful and earnest. In general it just feels nice. And I see so many Silverado suggestions that I'm hopeful she will see it because I think I will enjoy seeing it through her eyes.

God, that is a stupid movie. Its premise is that being gay is all about liking musicals and caring about fabric designs, and nothing to do with sexual/romantic attraction to the same sex.

Kevin Kline is amazing. Check him out in the comedy "Soapdish" from 1990 with Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg and Robert Downey Jr. Oh, edited to add: "In & Out" with Mr. Kline from 1997. A really fun, wonderful movie and performance.

That is a funny movie. Underrated. January Man with Kevin Klein is not bad either. It did crappy in the theaters. But a lot of famous people in it. Especially a young, handsome Alan Rickman. Right after he made Die Hard. Early 90’s Alan Rickman can get it, lol.

In England 'Lawyers' are subdivided into Solicitors, who primarily work outside of court/are part of minor court proceedings eg handling divorces, and Barristers, who are the ones in the wigs who defend clients in court eg for criminal cases such as murder :)

And Barristers are further subdivided between Juniors and Q.C.s [or K.C.s, if it is a King on the throne instead of a queen]. A barrister's status as a Junior or a Q.C. has, confusingly, no relation to their length of time practising the law and many Junior Barristers can be quite elderly and have had a lengthy legal career. It is all designed to be as mystifying to the common oick in the street as possible, as per every aspect of English society.

they had such a good time making this film that they made another film together called fierce creatures which is really under rated

Maybe I'm misreading your reaction, Ashleigh, but it seems you may have missed that each of Ken's deadly attempts were INTENDED to kill the old lady. As an animal activist, he was absolutely horrified each time they went wrong and offed another of her dogs instead.

So many great lines from this movie. "Hey! Vietnam was a tie!" This movie made me fall in love with Kevin Kline as an actor. He is fantastic.

They named their daughter Portia after a character in Shakespeare's "The Merchant Of Venice". At one point in the play she must act as a lawyer. Jamie Lee Curtis looks perfect because she had great looking parents. And don't feel weird about wanting to look like a young Jamie Lee Curtis - Jamie Lee Curtis would probably want to look like a young Jamie Lee Curtis. The scene where the family accidentally walks in on Cleese while he's naked illustrates one of his basic precepts of comedy: that while it can be funny to watch someone behaving foolishly, it's even funnier to watch someone who's watching someone behaving foolishly.

Funny how you asked about pronouncing Cleese and if it’s like “cheese.” Fun fact, John Cleese’s family name was originally “Cheese.” His father was tired of people making fun of it when he was fighting in WW1, so he changed it to Cleese.

Ken was also of Monty Python. Kevin Kline (Otto) was nominated or won Best Supporting Actor for this. They tried to capture lightening in a bottle a second time when this same group of actors starred in a movie called Fierce Creatures (animals in it so you may like it), but it did not have the same magic or notoriety.

The good thing about comments is that you can confess to things you would never tell anyone you know IRL, and no one who reads it will ever know who you are. I'm a grizzly 60 year old ex fireman... but when John Cleese says at this part "you are the most beautiful, sexy girl I have ever seen in my entire life" it is said with such tenderness it nearly chokes me with emotion. Thank god no-one I know will ever read that, but there you have it... fantastic film and beautiful soundtrack, thanks for posting. P.S if you're touting for classic 90s movies to react to, may I suggest "Scent of a woman" with Al Pacino?

I enjoy Fierce Creatures more than A Fish Called Wanda - mainly because Kevin Kline's character in FC isn't as repulsive as Otto.

Kevin Kline is a freaking awesome actor. He mostly does comedy, but he also does dead serious drama (Sophie’s Choice, The Ice Storm, Cry Freedom). He was Bottom in an excellent version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. More recently, he was Belle’s father Maurice in the live action Beauty and the Beast (and made him a real character!).

Glad you did this one . Loved the Stripes vid, Imma few days behind. You did a great job working around the stuff that would get you blocked and still made it fun!. A Fish Called Wand is one of the best movies, This is a great mashup of Monty Python - John Cleese (Sounds like Lease), Jamie Lee, Kevin Kline (love to hate), and Michael Palin as Ken, the best secondary first rate character ever!

I would also suggest to watch "Fierce Creatures" which has partly the same cast like "A Fish called Wanda", John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, Michael Palin, Cynthia Cleese (John Cleese's daughter). And there are lots of animals involed.

My favorite comedy of all time. I memorised it. I love how everyone in this movie is a complete and total bastard but you keep rooting for them. Fun fact: the actress playing John Cleese's daughter actually was John Cleese's daughter. She changed her name in the credits so no one would notice.

Fun fact: The fish that Kevin Kline ate were made out of jelly. He claims that he offered to eat real, live fish, but the filmmakers politely wouldn't let him. Also Jamie Lee Curtis has pointed out that in several shots you can see her cracking up: when Wanda and Otto have their argument at the dockside ("To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people!") and she buried her face in pillows during Kevin Kline's ejaculation scene to keep her from bursting out laughing at the faces he was making.

Most of this cast reunited in a film called "Fierce Creatures" that you might want to check out (same actors, different characters) . Several people have already suggested "True Lies". And for a different character for Kevin Klein, I recommend "French Kiss".

John Cleese’s father actually changed his name from Cheese to Cleese

I agree. Personally, I found Fierce Creatures a funnier movie and a better time overall. But, taste is subjective and all that so to each their own so long as we love movies and don't fight over the small things.

Sorry to disappoint, but Kevin Kline received his Best Supporting Academy Award for this film. His first film role was a supporting part in the 1982 masterpiece Sophie’s Choice. The film not only took home the Best Picture Oscar, but Meryl Streep turned in unquestionaby the greatest performance by an actress in cinema history. Back on the comedy side, he appeared as lead actors in the movies In and Out in 1997 and Dave in 1993.

Kevin Kline… You have to see the movie “I Love You to Death”, it’s based on a true story and it’s crazy and hilarious!!! Also the cast is insane!!

Hey, Ashleigh, you'll love how Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Swartzenegger turn out in "True Lies" but you might also like seeing her parents, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis leading the cast in "The Black Shield of Falworth". :)

And she also has a really nice personality. Her entire life. I mean she's no Mister Rogers, but who is? But she's always been decent, well-liked, adeva, her co-workers like her, and she is smart too.

As a matter of fact, John Cleese father Reginald Cheese changed his name before entering WW1. John Cleese later said in his Autobiography that he wished to go back to his original sur name because all of his close friends call him Jack and to him Jack Cheese is a great name for a comedian and a great reason to live in Monetary.

The actor who played Ken (Michael Palin) was also in Monty Python. Also Archie Leach was Cary Grant's real name.

If she is ever going to love Kevin Kline, she is gonna have to watch French Kiss.

This film was notorious when it came out for legitimately making people laugh so hard they died.

Yay I looked forward to this all week! Here's a variety list of classic movies to try: "Midnight Cowboy" (1969), "Back To School" (1986), "Rain Man" (1988), "Gosford Park" (2001), "African Queen" (1951). Keep being awesome Ashleigh love your stuff
