@@DNotzz well it's been 8 years since the last one, I understand that they are ultra dense, accurate, complicated and intertwined plots and characters through out many books. But at the same time the worst thing that could happen is that the books are never completed, say that Winds Of Winter comes out in 2020 (9 years ) and the seventh one takes as long as the sixth one the series won't be finished until 2029, it will have taken 40 years. The likelihood of this actually happens is pretty low to me, GRRM would be 80 at that point so it isn't impossible but I'm just saying the guy doesn't have forever.

Massey is the perfect man for the mission, if the mission is actually to feed information to the Boltons. Massey is pragmatic and defeatist: he believes Stannis's cause to be lost and looks after "Number One" above all else. He has also just had his request for a lordship dismissed by Stannis without even a moment of consideration, and in a paragraph or two will have his request for Asha's hand turned down, albeit with the prospect of reconsideration if he serves well. All in all, Massey is ripe for turning his cloak, whether by an active decision on his part, or by way of saving his skin if captured. What is he going to tell the Boltons? That Stannis has no hope of victory, that even Stannis sees this and is making provision for the safety of his family. That Stannis's one hope is the recruitment of 20,000 sellswords, funded by the Iron Bank (if Massey doesn't reach Braavos then, no doubt, others will be sent on the same mission: it's only a matter of time before someone succeeds). All of this may be designed to goad the Boltons into thinking that they'll never have a better chance to, not only defeat Stannis, but to crush him utterly, and if they wait then they may find they have little chance at all, once Stannis has his sellswords. Stannis would love nothing more than for the Boltons to commit everything they have on a single throw of the dice: dice which, unbeknownst to them. are currently loaded in Stannis' favour (due to him being precisely in the location that he's chosen to give him the best chance).

I think Stannis is much like the Hulk, he is ALWAYS angry, and biting sarcasm is just his language. H'es always cranky and can think rather clearly in that state.

stannis is buying mercenaries for jon snow. Stannis knows the future and knows his death is coming he is buying swords for a special event in the future to support the real azor ahai. He is going to sacrifice a large part of his army to take out most of the boltons and sent the pink letter to start the string of event that will lead to johns resurrection. Stannis knows almost everything and can see the future, since he has looked into the flames after the blackwater he could see his death. After that point he had a completely different personality seen by davos, he was more secretive and grew a darker confidence despite suffering a huge defeat. Stannis then went on to come out of nowhere time and time again to influence huge events surrounding the north and john snow.

1) first 2) I love your Stannis voice, it makes me laugh 3) Stannis is amazing at hiding emotion, and imitating them when needed, he probably saw how emotions can be the bane , or the ally to a players of the game. 4) I love Stannis, he is the Mannis, but the man is perplexing at best, a very cunning Stag, not one to be cornered by Wolves or Lions easily, nor fool enough to tread on the thorns of roses. really enjoyed your bid Preston as always.

I do find it kind of ironic that he wanted to use the golden company when they just started invading the Stormlands.

And it's even more ironic when Stannis says that Bittersteel founded the GC with the purpose of putting a Daemon Blackfyre's son on the Iron Throne and failed while the Golden Company are (probably) fighting for a Blackfyre again!

I think Massey is a pretty standup guy in the Stannis cause, he seems genuinely loyal to me, telling Stannis that he wants to stand beside him in this battle (which he believes there is no hope for) instead of just taking the money and making himself a lordship.

And the wait for Theon I Part IV, which HAS to contain the quotes we all know and love from this chapter, continues!

I think that line about "the dreadfort or winterfell" is sarcasm. KInda like if you found out someone was going to kill you and you asked "did you plan to use poison or a knife".

About the ravens, it seems to me that going one way and back could be seen as one house. They know the direction to and back. A two way raven can go to let's say: Kingslanding - White harbor and Kingslanding - Riverrun. I could be wrong but that's what it seems like to me

Though I do wonder if Stannis is just screwing with the Iron Bank, what if he's secretly sending money to Edric Storm over in Lys? Though he is a bastard, at least he's not a bastard born of incest, and he is still Stannis' nephew, so I wonder if Stannis is going to try to get money to him to possibly build himself an army if he should fail. The other two horses that he gives to Massey make me think that he might be sending Shireen and Selyse (or possibly Patchface if you believe Mel when she says he's dangerous and has something left to do in the series) across the Narrow Sea where they'll be safer. Maybe he wants them to meet up with Edric and possibly have Andrew Estermont begin plotting in the event Stannis loses and dies. All he would have to do is declare Edric as a legitimate Baratheon and now there would be two left to take up arms against the Lannisters and continue the main lines of the House on. I might just be talking out of my ass, but the idea that Stannis is smuggling money to the Caymen Islands to fund an Edric-Shireen army would be a very interesting. And it was also Justin Massey who Stannis told directly to, quote, "avenge my death, and seat my daughter on the Iron Throne. Or die in the attempt." And even though knight's vows are shit, he did swear on his honor that he would do that. So it might just be that he is smuggling Shireen out of Westeros.

The other reason why I think Edric is getting money from Stannis is because he kind of parallels Aegon in a way. 1) He's being sponsored by a rich benefactor. (Edric=Iron Bank, Aegon= Illyrio) 2) He's the son of royalty. 3) He's an exiled nobleman living in the Free Cities avoiding Westerosi nobility 4) He has a company of five people: Aegon= JonCon, Haldon, Duck, Tyrion, and Septa Lemore Edric=Estermont, Gerald Gower, Tristan of Tally Hill, Omer Blackberry, and a guy called Lewys the Fishwife 5) They both seek the employment of the Golden Company (and if you want to be technical they both also have Targaryen blood in them, assuming Aegon is an actual Targaryen/Blackfyre)

Stanis may have instructed the banker to send the money in another way, he only wants to get rid of the knight

Stannis knew from Jon's letter that the Arnolf is betraing him. He also knew that Arnolf can only assist Winterfell via raven messages. And who takes care of the ravens? Maesters. A Dreadfort maester only adds to the suspicion. So that's how he knows about Tybold.

Stannis has a guy called Six from house Goodmen?

This was the best/most interesting video in this series so far, great work and analysis!

Stannis loved his maester like a father but yet her let him essentially poison himself.

You said it's interesting that Theon can tell who pissed himself just by the smell, considering how overwhelming his own smells are. But it brought to mind how Tyrion knew who pissed themselves by the smell in his own prereleased chapters. Maybe on Planetos, that's just something everyone can do. 😏 I doubt it, but just in case, I'm glad I live on planet earth. That's a super power I just never want to have.

I think you're missing that Stannis's anger IS a measured thing. The guy is literally always angry. But it's a sullen and brooding anger.

The information about the ravens just made me realise something & I feel really dumb for not seeing it before. So presumably each maester raises ravens & trains them to fly back to their castle. Those ravens are then exchanged between masters as required. It makes sense too though, that each maester also send a few ravens to the Citadel each year so that they always have a goodly supply capable of flying to every castle in Westeros. This opens up a few glaring security issues, the biggest of which might have some serious effect in the story. So the maester of house A wants more ravens that fly to the castle of house B. He sends a message to the maester of house B asking for a batch of ravens. The message is intercepted by house C, who are at war with house A and have spies in house B, They replace the ravens being sent to house A with ravens that fly to their castle instead. So whenever house A thinks it's sending a raven to house B, they are actually going to house C. House C simply read the messages then send them on to house B so as not to arose suspicion.

The Raven Office/Service is something that occurred to me a while back. Their adventures on the road, maybe as a sitcom. Since it’s an essential service they’d be immune from the warfare mostly and it’s be a good viewpoint to see all the craziness.

Hi Preston, I believe you missed something important. At 8:41 Stannis says "leave the ravens", and the next sentence is Theon observing that Stannis has a vein throbbing in his neck. I believe that the two are related. Stannis gets nervous at this exact moment because there's a strong possibility that he *knows* that the ravens are actually skin-changed, and he may even know by whom. I mean, why would he want two stinking, cawing ravens with him, in this small room, especially at this crucial moment for him, where he has to decide his battle plan and receive various important characters? Stannis is not angry, he's just anxious because he knows the "boss" (Bloodraven?) is there with him. At this point, a connection between Stannis and BR (or any other greenseer) is just as likely as a connection between him and the Mance/Umbers/Manderly crowd... At least in my opinion. Cheers

14:00 Those Horses are Starving to death Preston. It's a Smart move to give Justin a few extra Horses, just in case any of them drop dead on the way. They might have to finish the trip walking considering Castle Black is what? 500... 600 miles away? At least Justin's group will have plenty to eat. A few horses could also carry supplies.

About the extra horses, it was common for travelers to bring twice as many horses as riders on long journeys. This is so they could alternate between them and give some of the horses a break from carrying a people on their backs. It made for more efficient travel. It could be that George R.R. Martin expects the readers to already know that and that's why he doesn't bother describing the purpose of the extra horses.

Maybe if the iron bank flakes on the contract because they think he's dead (pink letter), then stannis can later argue that he is under no obligations to pay back the iron thrones (and his brother's) GIGANTIC debt when he wins. But then, stannis is never getting on the damn thing anyway

Good talk about Massey and the sells words. Either Stannis has a brilliant plan that we don't see, or he has lost his marbles.

If Stannis bankrupts the Iron Bank, Braavos must turn to Slavery to stay liquid. This would do two things for Stannis: 1. Increase slave-traffic with wildling-slaves from beyond the Wall. This would reduce the threat of another wildling-invasion (and it would bleed away bodies for the Others to turn into Wights), whicht would secure the North both from the Wildlings and by gaining sympathy from the Lords of the North. (It might be a problem for the Wildlings south of the Wall though...) 2. Make Stannis well liked in the Free Cities, especially Pentos. Bankruptcy of Braavos might even mean that Pentos will become fully independent again. I'm not sure how important those things would actually be for Stannis (the effect would probably be relatively small), but Stannis needs a long-term plan beyond conquering the North if he wants to become King of all seven Kingdoms. These reasons may at least be part of why he does what he does with Massey.

The extra horses are probably just in case a horse breaks a leg or falls sick, or needs to be slaughtered for meat. The weather is harsh and accidents can happen.

Stannis, Jaime, and Theon are the most interesting characters in the series.

Prehaps Stannis' last 'fuck you' to the Baratheon/Lannisters in Kings Landing is to land them with a huge loan to pay off which, along with all the other debts they have, will lead to them being completely and utterly in financial ruin and cause them to lose any respect or power they had over the small folk and their vessels.

Here's my (occasional) problem with Preston's work: He just flat out says that the ravens seem to be skinchanged, with zero support from the text, and then rolls with it. The analysis is great as always, just that every now and then, there's a big fat baseless assertion sprinkled around.

when someone compares a political figure to a non political figure, its not necessarily politics that is the point of comparison.

I think the most robust explanation for Stannis sending Massey to Bravos is that Stannis wants Massey's to do exactly what we all expect him to do, piss away Stannis' money in a brothel. The drunken exile talking of seating Shireen on the Iron Throne while he's in his cups would really help sell the idea Stannis is dead to the wider world. It's more & more clear that Stannis really, really wants people to think that he's died in the upcoming battle with Bolton's forces. I think he's planning on taking the North without anyone outside of the north being aware of it. Think about it, if Stannis is declared dead & that news disseminates throughout the world, spymasters like Qyburn may use the fact that Massey has abandoned Stannis' cause as proof Stannis is dead. If Stannis can then take Winterfell, eliminate all the Freys & the Boltons & the disloyal Karstarks then he has a shot at claiming the north while the world at large still thinks him dead. At the very least he'll cause massive confusion.

I could hear you read all the books analyzing each chapter, so much that im missing in these books.

I'm really looking forward to the Alayne sample chapter.

In regards to massey, it is winter - if stannis wins the coming battle, winter will shield him from southern action, so he might have those years to get the men.

Regarding the blood contract and the less than fully supportive Massey, Stannis has seen first-hand the power of Kings-blood magic via his relationship with Melisandre so he would be careful in terms of how he uses his own special blood. Part of me wonders if having observed LF on the Small Council he understands LF's debt game, so he's playing some kind of bloodmagic trick on the Iron Bank, eg look at the sequence, he calls in Tybald, Karstarks and Massey..the first two he quite clearly calls out so maybe it's no different with Massey. Massey is perhaps like Selyses brother, being used as some kind of sacrifice which was Selyses brothers fate after he proved less than fully immersed in the cause.

Imagine if someone burned that letter with Stannis' blood on it because they thought it was worthless now.

I always thought the idea of taking extra horses was in case some break legs. Given that the roads will be totally covered with snow.

It matters a lot if the raven goes to winterfell or the dreadfort. The dreadfort doesnt have any known leadership that can write a letter or tend to a raven.

No, he means Winterfell or the Dreadfort regardless of the fact that one would notify the other. Each are potential locations if someone were to inform on Stannis

Also if they were going to the Dreadfort, then that could mean the Boltons were more than likely there in force instead of Winterfell

Stannis wants Massey to betray him. That is why Stannis gives him this absurdly difficult task. Notice how Stannis excluded him from his encounter with the spy maester, but left Godry Farring, Richard Horpe and Clayton Suggs present. Stannis wouldn't want Roose Bolton to find out that he revealed the maester's treachery. A very important piece of information that was given to Massey is that if Stannis would die, all his supporters should rally behind his daughter Shireen, which is at the Wall. Here is my theory: 1. Stannis will send a message with his newly captive ravens to WInterfell, which will say all of Stannis' plans to buy 20 000 soldiers have them rally behind his heir in case of his demise. 2.Stannis will defeat Hosteen Frey and the Frey forces with a combination of his swiss cheese-like lakes and Manderly support. 3. Then Ramsay who is said to be right behind the Frey and Manderly forces will find Stannis' camp destroyed with Manderlys claiming to have killed Stannis, but could not retrieve his body. Wyman would hand Ramsay Stannis' Lightbringer sword as proof and lay the news that Theon and fArya were no where to be found. 4.Ramsay believes that Theon and fArya have reached the Wall, where Shireen, Selyse and the last known Stark are as well. He sends the Pink letter. He probably wants Val and Mance's baby so as to not have the wildling army join forces with Shireen. I don't think he has Mance caged. But he does know Mance is in Winterfell by torturing the spearwives. Mance is probably scheming in the crypts. What exactly I can't tell. 5. Having the information that Stannis is dead and that his heir is at the Wall. The Boltons would leave Winterfell and march their forces north to kill Shireen. By then Theon would have arrived at Castle Black and inform everyone of Stannis' plan. The Boltons would be trapped between Stannis' forces at their trail, the wildling army lead by Jesus (Jon) marching south and Dustin, Ryswell, Umber and Manderly traitors from within. The Red Wedding would be avenged in some great "The North Remembers" poetic slaughterhouse.

Maybe Ravens are left there, so that Bloodraven and Bran can see what has happened? As for Iron Bank, Stannis doesn't want this money for himself, it's for his hair Shereen in case he dies.

stannis is smart enough to know that marching to winterfell without siege weapons would give him a disadvantage, so he took a risk in waiting out. luckily the freys are not familiar with the northern environment and stannis has the hill clansmen as allies for now.

Hi Preston! I hope you still read the comments on older videos, because I had an idea about this one. You couldn't figure out why Stannis was sending Massey to waste money, but what if it's not what /Stannis/ wants, but Tycho Nestoris? You said Massey might succeed in sending back some sellswords from Braavos- and that might be exactly what the Iron Bank wants, if it has something to do with the upcoming election. Furthermore, what if Arya was one of the Bravos recruited? She could be in training and disguised as a boy and this is how she gets back to Westeros, especially if she hears about Jon's death and adds to her death list. That would put her in the perfect position to be used by 'Pate' who was said to be looking North with the glass candle. Let me know what you think!
