The Unsullied are armed like the Roman legionnaires with 2 throwing spears ,a fighting spear, with a sword for close combat.

TMSD 72 That's what I was gonna say. I always imagined them as legionaries/hoplite mix to denote the time their training comes from. The Roman legions were highly mobile and capable of quick and precise formation changes during combat. Unsullied are even more disciplined than the legion. I have full faith in their fighting abilities.

The honestly struck me more as being like the Pikemen that were employed by Alexander, which were far less mobile and were ultimately struck down by the more mobile Legionariees. Legionairees closed the gap by throwing spears yes, but they used, well... thowing spears, which were anything but cumbersome. After closing the lines they used swords, which benfitted close quarter fighting way more than spears did. Unsullied use long spears for melee combat, which Legionairees never did and make much more sense if you're going to a close formation Phalanx style. Point being, Unsullied to me seem to be some weird amalgenation between Roman legionariees and Pikemen and I am not so sure how practical that is at all. That being said, they are still highly trained elite soldiers and have no buisiness dying against ridicoulus yunkish slave soldiers or Sellswords. So Mereen should have this battle in the bag.

Abraxas Roman throwing Spears were very heavy, made of thick wood(thicker than normal fighting Spears) with a long iron tip. The legionnaires were the heavy infantry of their time and we're supported by various troops that usually carried Spears, like hastati or triarri and others. Pikes are not Spears and are used to keep lines and cavalry at bay. Macedonian pikes may not have beat the legions but pikes were used in most militaries until only a few hundred years ago due to their effectiveness. The famous mercenaries, Landsknechts, were primarily pikemen. Scottish pikes defeated English knights and so on. I made the connection to hoplites as well to cover their use of spears as many hoplite units had multiple kinds of Spears for multiple purposes. They used these while maintaining skirmishing mobility. Spears were the primary weapon of war for thousands of years. German literally means SpearMan. In European tradition, the male lineage is the Spear side of the family. I can't express how prevalent and effective the use of the spear in human warfare has been. If you join the military today you learn to fight with an assault rifle and maybe your sidearm(pistol.) If you joined the military at any other time, you learned to fight with a spear and maybe a sidearm like a sword or axe. Some people today are trained as snipers or machine gunners, some people through history used specialty weapons as well; but for every one of them there were 20 spearmen.

Close. The 3 spears means that unsullied likely are fighting in a lockstep formation. Besides the golden company, who we know use this formation, the unsullied are the only other fighting force in the world that could have the potential discipline to successfully employ a lockstep.

Concerning Unsullied tactics in the field: the Unsullied are primarily inspired by Ancient Greek Phalanx/Hoplite and Roman Legions. Those were the top-tier infantry units of their time. They didn't win their battle by strength or ferocity but endurance and discipline. When a Phalanx or Legion forms up in the field, they are near unstoppable. The multiple ranks allow them to swap the first rank fighters periodically to maintain their fighting force without suffering exhaustion for long periods. Concerning the weapons of the Unsullied: they are carrying a shield, a short sword, and three spears ... which is not to unusual for highly trained soldiers. The shield and the short sword are perfect to keep up an endurance fight in tight formation. I guess the three spears (assuming they are different) are likely some long spear to ward of cavalry attacks from the front, which will be planted in the ground, when not in use, once they are formed up. Another spear is likely a kind of javelin, which Roman legionaries could keep stored at the inside of their shield to be use for simple ranged attacks. I guess the last spear will be one for light close quarter combat (in case the line gets broken and things get messy), so I guess it would be something akin to a trident, which might be also be stored in the shield. So I don't think the weapons are actually a burden for the highly trained Unsullied. However, history has shown us the weaknesses of legions and phalanx: if they get outflanked, while locked in battle with infantry (as Hannibal did in the Battle of Cannae), they can get crushed. Also, when they are not able to line up properly due to a chaotic battle situation (as Arminius did in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest), they can get defeated. However dragons and elephants are wild cards in the battle of fire and betrayal can always mess up everything. I personally think that, if they Unsullied can line up and keep their flanks save, they could repel any attack from the besieging forces with barely any losses and a guess the Yunkish and Ghiscari are stupid enough to attack them.

That diagram of Meereen and the six sisters was incredible helpful. It has been a while since I read this chapter but I remember the layout of the war being confusing as hell without a visual aid. I hope GRRM decides to include more maps like the one of King‘s Landing in the published versions of TWOW to better illustrate these complex scenes of war and battle.

Regarding the bit about the trebuchets not being able to throw the corpses at long range the way Joffrey's trebuchets were doing at the battle of the Blackwater, I think one thing you're forgetting is that Joffrey's trebuchets were on top of the wall, which would give them a longer range than the Yunkish trebuchets which were down at ground level and trying to fire over a wall.

With the four battles in the different corners of our story and the mention of the pale mare at Meereen I have been wondering if GRRM is making a deliberate reference to the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, and that each battlefield has elements of each horse. It could be that it's just a reference and that these images have no bearing on the story they are just references to the book of Revelation. But if one thinks about it, Meereen has the pale mare and the one who rides the pale horse is Death. It is interpreted as disease as in the Greek the horse in "chloros" which means pallid, sickly green, the color of a rotting corpse. And the horse really does bring literal death on it even though it is not associated with only disease in the Bible. The second clear reference is War, who has a red horse, which in Greek is described as being the color of fire, but the more important image is a great sword that cuts both ways and has the power to take peace from the Earth. This reminds me of Stannis who literally has a red sword, and whose unyielding sense of justice guarantees that he will fight until he is King, meaning his victory will guarantee that there is no peace. Also he has likened justice to a hard truth and hard truths cut both ways. Now the other two riders are a little harder to place in our story, being famine and conquest. I suppose the white rider with a bow and a crown could be Aegon, who goes from victory to victory. Also if he is fake, it would be a parallel to the white rider as he is thought to represent the Antichrist as a false king who will be overthrown in the end. The last horse would be Famine, someone who causes the price of food to increase but not the luxuries like wine. It could be Euron as Famine has a black horse, but the association is weak. Euron is attacking the Reach the only source of grain that hasn't been burned and pillaged but how would Euron stop that by raiding on the coast. Maybe he will cause the Reach to focus in on itself and therefore cause the flow of food to other parts decrease therefore instigating famine. This part is really weak.

Thanks, but it was just a hunch and me trying to fit it into the story. Only the first two are even remotely accurate (Death and War). The third one if intentional would be interesting, since it is yet another hint that there is something false about Aegon. The last, Famine is really off, the only thing that connects him to Euron is the colour black. Still we shall see what happens when the book comes out.

I would rather guess that the Battle of Fire (Meereen) is Pestilence (because they are suffering from a plague), the Battle of Ice (near Winterfell) is Famine (because they are starving up there), the Battle of Blood (Redwyne Straits) is Death (because Euron used the death/blood to his advantage), and the Battle of Steel (Storm's End) is War (because of the massive confusing battle to take place there). My alternative guess would be that Meerreen is War and Storm's End is Pestilence/Conquest, because of the multiple meanings of that horseman: Pestilence (Griff is suffering from Greyscale), Conquest (what the Golden Company is trying to achieve), and Anti-Christ (Aegon Blackfyre/Young Griff, who seems to be a fake saviour). No matter the exact interpretation (and we will see how well each fits once the book is released ... and maybe GRR Martin also (intentionally) mixed stuff a little bit up), I think with the four battles and four horsemen you are definitely right. It would also fit the overall narrative, because after the four horsemen, the apocalypse comes (the Others). Furthermore, each battle has at least one Christ metaphor in it, so GRR Martin is clearly playing with religious symbolism here.

  • @psevdhome

    @psevdhome

    6 жыл бұрын

EquinoxOmega You point out alternatives well. I juat focused on different aspects of the horsemen. Also they kind of symbolise all death during war together so in a sense all horsemen are present at every battle. And as you've listed there are actually two lists of horsemen. In popular culture they are pestilence, war, death and famine but in the text of the bible they are conquest, war, famine and death, but death is associated with disease.

Considering aDwD came out in 2011 and an entire HBO show has come and gone before tWoW ( 8 years assuming 2019 ) He is well. Within his right to bitch as are the great of us. Maybe it is time we give the readers a break and stop sucking up to the author. If he has gotten so lost in his own story then that is his damn fault. Not ours who pay 60 bucks for the hardcover, 30 for the audiobooks, 49 for the blue ray and the HBO sub. Plus yes, it takes time..but GRRM is supposed to be a professional writer. Is not like me who writes when I have time in between jobs.

Unsullied resemble Roman legionaries. depending on the era (but let’s go with prototypical), a Roman legionary would have a large scutum (curved rectangular shield), a gladius (short sword), and 2 javelins ( 1 heavy and 1 light pilum). The pilums could also be used as spears if needed. The pilums could be stored with the shield, some depictions have them slotted on the inside bottom and sticking out above the top of the shield upright or as an X pattern. Regardless of storage, a main battle tactic was to dispose of one of the pilums before melee is even initiated (these javelins were also designed to break upon impact, meaning they couldn’t be thrown back but also would get lodged in the enemy’s armour and shields if it didn’t kill), so throwing them fist made the melee much easier. I’m not sure what the third spear could be, the Roman legion did transition to plumbata, which is a type of war dart (think large arrow made of lead with a lead bulb behind the arrow head and many could be stored in the shield), you could call it a very short throwing spear. There’s also the more pike like spear (sarrissa) if we want to dip into Greek phalanx warfare. This was a formation weapon, not a personal one, but given the unsullied, I’d include it. So the three spears could be: Sarissa-like pike (formation weapon) Personal spear Javelin spear. Iirc, sarissas have been depicted with a middle section which can be suspected to be a joint. For battle logistics it made repair easier for an 10ft long pike (just 2 5ft pieces of wood) For the unsullied it could serve as all three spears. Pike (when together) Then the personal and javelin when separated. Which would be cool, and still logistically sound.

While dysentery is not contagious from person to person, having rotten corpses hurled into your city day and night will cause disease. Think about the bacteria contained in those ripened corpses, and they basically explode when they strike home- this is a great way to lower morale and be intimidating, but it is also absolutely a hygiene hazard for Mereen and all of the people within. There's a reason we are careful with the handling of corpses, and why we dispose of them ASAP by burning/burying deep underground.

I don't think you should be worried about the unsullied's maneuverability. While I always envisaged them as Greek hopolites, maybe because of the show, they could also be based on the Hastati. The Hastati carried multiple spears at certain points in history. They're most well known for their javelin like pila but they also had longer heavier spears at times quite possibly with a sword as well, not forgetting their shields. Later they became primarily swordsman with javelins. They had no problem with maneuverability. Equally the hopolites while not as maneuverable had 8 foot and up long spears as well as sword and shield. Three spears a sword and a shield seems to be appropriate and realistic for the unsullied. Perhaps a long spear a medium spear and a javelin?

3:58 You note that Famine is connected to the Battle of Ice and that Pestilence is connected to the Battle of Fire. If you continue that thought for the other two battles and the other two Horsemen, wouldn't you think that the Battle of Blood will be connected to Death (so many bodies and blood) and that the Battle of Steel will be connected to War (after all, Jon Conn and the Golden Co have been waging this war for decades). Idk I kind of like this connection and that it doesn't really have to mean anything, it's just for fun.

I've always thought the "way of the three spears" is a reference to the roman heavy infantry's use of multiple throwing spears in battle. Romans would throw javelins of different weight at the enemy as the ranks closed to kill, disrupt, disorder the men as well as disabling the enemy shields. In the late classical and early medieval legions they might have carried as many as three javelins. I think it might be as simple as one light javelin, one heavy javelin and one spear. Throw the light at 40 paces, the heavy at 20 paces and use the spear I melee combat. Furthermore, I presume the "lockstep legions of old ghis" are Macedonian style phalanxes.

Could it be that Westerosi trebuchets are just better than Ghiscari ones? Westeros has far more castles and seems to have had far more infighting during which trebuchets would be used against these castles. They may therefore have far more refined siege weapons, or even just more experience in using them effectively. I do wonder also about the possibility of whoever set the trebuchets up, or did the calculations for them, sabotaging them deliberately, though I don't think we know anything about who this could be.

Dear Preston 1 - When talknng about throwing people across the river Barristan means puting trebuchets on the other side of the Skahazadan- thus completely encircling the city as is expected by a siege. 2 - Maybe the essosi trebuchets are less advanced than westerosi and can't fire as far 3 - We don't have conformation that Little Walder Frey is leading the army at the Crofter's village, all we know the armor belonged to him in aCoK - Hosteen Frey or whoever the leader is may have taken it - what use for an armor does a child have. 4 - Whait what??? You expect Selmy to give the horn to a person who can fight well? Correct me if i am wrong but the person carrying the horn has to watch and communicate, not fight and die - that is what the army has to do. 5 - "We are uncertain of where those 3 000 unsullied went". ... Maybe they died? In the war? That they are all in? Or maybe of the sickness? I can feel you will be using "the hidden army" in a theory later, despite there being many other more logical explanations than "Barristan has this secret plan, you see...". It's the same with half the golden company and Victarion's "missing" ships - on a long voyage people get lost, you can't expect all to make it. You also falied to mention how Barristan is quite literaly riding a pale mare which may also have some effect on the peolpe

Hi Preston, I wanted to ask you a question: do you think that GRRM is planning carefully which book spin-off he is releasing? For example the Hedge knight was released before ASOS, the Sworn Sword before AFFC, the Mistery Knight before ADWD and Now we will have the Princess and the Queen, The world of Ice and Fire, the short essay on the first 3 Targaryen kings and Fire and Blood before TWOW. La it possible that he choose what to release in order to give us more informations to help us understand what will happen in the next book? The only thing i can think on this is that in the Mistery Knight we have a description of Bloodraven and in ADWD We have a description of the 3EC. I don' t remember if the 3EC said that he was Bloodraven, But if not We have been able to figure out the truth just thanks to the Mistery Knight. What do you think?

That would be overly burdensome. The Ghiscari Legions or New Ghis are described, and the Unsullied were initially modelled after the Ghiscari Legions of old. But how close either of those is to the original, that is not alltogether known. However, the former have javelins, and it would be only logical to carry a pair of those, as did the Roman Legions.
