This is easily my favorite series Preston has put out, however this may be biased by the fact that the battle of Ice, is one of the storylines I am most excited for in Winds. I'm looking forward to prepping for Alayne.

I had never heard/thought of the old-man Karstark and Theon switch prediction. I especially like it from a storytelling aspect. Then Theon could act as old-man Karstark and retake Winterfell but this time for The North via Stannis. Also, regarding Stannis' claim that he knows Ramsay more than Ramsay knows him- I've always thought Stannis was making the claim, because he has Theon hanging on the wall of his headquarters i.e. a Ramsay encyclopedia. Really great video and series!

I know Stannis will die at some point but I really hope he orchestrates some kind of masterwork and takes down the Boltons before it happens.

It's small things. Cantuse believes that the Iron Bank is in league with the Faceless Men and that they may provide Stannis with the real Arya. I believe the Iron Bank and the Faceless Men are enemies. He also believes that the weather situation was created by Mel, while I don't believe there is magic in ASoIaF. He believes Theon sent the Pink Letter. I still lean towards Mance (not that Stannis or Theon or even Dagmer are bad choices).

It isn't glamour or mummery as they say, and the wearer of the face receives dreams of the formers memory and torment. There is obviously blood magic as well... So much more, so I'm confused. You go in depth farther than any person I've ever seen,there's no way you miss that there IS INDEED magic in ASoIaF Edit; green sight, skin changing. Mel blowing up Varymyrs bird.. etc.

Henrik Genzink nigga ive read the books twice through i love them i was just stating that Stannis is in my opinion arguably the best character (other than the Lannisters arguably) and he is actually the rightful king in the line of succession. i get the point of the books dude. monarchy and war are bad. thats a central theme.

We know that Tycho was in White Harbor when Davos arrived (his ships are in the harbor). So, Tycho and Manderly were talking about something. Perhaps they discussed something else, but Tycho was there.

Juan Pablo Mina True, but we also know Tycho freed Tristifer Botley for some reason which means something changed regarding the campaign's relationship with the Ironborn. I can really only think of Wex or the planned liberation of Theon as things that could affect that decision. And knowing about those means Manderly was sharing vital information with Tycho.

This is such fantastic analysis! There is so much I overlooked about this chapter, and now I have so much more to think about. I cannot wait to see this analysis applied to the Arianna chapters. Especially the behavior of young Griff's men that Arianna observes.

Well, maybe Stannis is just saying that Ramsay "knows nothing" (A Snow that knows nothing? wow) of military warfare and strategy. I find it interesting that Stannis represents High War, field combat and strategy, and that the Boltons represent Low War, with deceit and dubious ploys to fight their battles. As Tywin says about the Red Wedding (don't remember if in book or show), why is it more honorable to kill men on the field than it is on a feast? His actions would stop the war to claim more and more lives, which is kinda why both tactics were used throughout history in the first place.

Nobody does an analysis like Preston! I was interested, too, near the end, that Preston pronounces 'brooch' to rhyme with 'pooch'. Where I come from, it is pronounced 'to rhyme with 'coach'. This is not the first time I have run across a word that Americans pronounce phonetically the way it is written, and at least in my part of Canada, we pronounce it otherwise. Examples: 'lieutenant' and 'shone'.

I do believe that Davos has heard stannis say so many times I don't think it's a speech I just think stannis is the kind of person who would repeatedly tell everyone "I did this don't you think you should be respecting me because I've done all these things" And Davos being his most loyal man, I don't doubt he would repeat the exact words that stannis uses

I think you underestimate Ramsey's sociopathy, arrogance and egotistic nature. Sure, Roose may insist on sending Ramsey with a third force out of prudence, but Ramsey would almost certainly insist on leading, or at least commanding, any Bolton force sent against Stannis anyway. If only for the pleasure of defeating and, presumably, flaying Stannis, Theon and/or Farya himself. After all, how often does he get the chance to possibly capture and torture a king? It sounds like something out of a wet dream for him.

No Preston, Stannis is a shit general. I watched D&D's adaptation of ASOIAF and Stannis just rammed his unorganized men straight into the enemy formation without any plans. Clearly, the bastard of Bolton is the superior general.

It's interesting that the conversation Theon and Stannis have, is very similar to the show in the sixth season before the battle of the bastards, when Sansa and Jon talk and she warns him he doesn't know Ramsey and not to fall for his tricks, and Jon says he has fought against worse.

One thing we don't talk about enough is Mance's possible plan. It seems like most people just write him off as a Stannis agent now & that can't be true. Despite defeat at The Wall, he finds himself inside Winterfell. Surely he has some sort of plan to turn this all to his advantage.

On Ramsey winning by trickery, if he's sent out from Winterfell, he could ambush either the Freys or the Manderleys, or maybe both. He could then retreat to Winterfell, saying the other 2 forces were destroyed by Stannis, while he sufffered minimal casualties and escaping (learning from Roose in the Riverlands). He would have gotten rid of his competition and strengthed his own position in Winterfell

Interesting stuff. My impression there is that the "Knows me" and "Knows" cawing are a reference to Ramsay understanding Stannis. After all Ramsay is excellent at psychology so may know how to manipulate Stannis personally. Some of the Northerners attaching themselves to his army may be spies for Boltons as well

And I thought I was so clever for thinking about that "fishing makes holes on the lake" theory.

When Stannis asks Theon "how many men is Roose Bolton like to send ?" Theon does NOT reply, "he will send half his force your grace, exactly half" he says "NO MORE than half". The phrase "no more than half" could mean roughly half of the Bolton's forces but it could also mean 4 blokes & a mule. Theon got to Stannis a little so Stannis decided to school him but I think he was also genuinely trying to confirm his own assessment of the situation. Stannis has never faced Roose in battle before & unlike Stannis, Roose does not have a huge CV of triumphs that Stannis can study. Stannis has (with the available info) determined that Roose is a cautious commander, likely to trust in the walls of Winterfell but for the first time he has the opportunity to ask someone who has been present during Roose's war councils, a man schooled in military tactics by Ned Stark no less, what Roose is actually like. Theon assertion that Roose will send no more than half his force against Stannis seems to confirm Stannis' own assessment & so he hints to a part of his own plan; to draw a portion of the Bolton forces out of Winterfell & defeat them.

Preston, I am eagerly awaiting your thoughts on Quentyn's role in the Dornish master plan. I agree with you about Doran's motivations and the Ryonish restoration, but Quentyn just doesn't seem to fit and his plot really makes Doran look like a fool, whether he set it up to fail or not.

But Roose doesn't mention anything about the Mormonts and Umbers, if his leak is from Stannis' letter to Jon, he would know that. Cantuse's version of 2 letters, one being to the Karstarks is far more likely.(Yes, I am aware that you don't want this series to be a copy-paste of Cantuse's Mann(is)festo, but still.)

I could see Ramsey warning reek back just because of the amount of joy he seemed to get out of terrorizing and destroying the psyche of theon. The 1st reek was something different from what I remember reading and from everything it seems that the initial reek was just as unruly and in many ways evil as Ramsey himself

And they'd also think that they have the numbers to overwhelm Stannis considering they assume the Karstarks are with them too!

I think the ravens repeating "know" was Bran trying to say to Theon, "you know who I am." Brans whisperings through the weirwood had a similar meaning. Bran wants Theon to know he's still around and watching him, we just dont know yet if its out of hatred or if he needs something from Theon.

I'm still not convinced that the talking crows have people actively warging them whenever they talk. It's certainly possible, but I think it's more likely that the intelligent ravens are intelligent due to their strong connection to the CotF and the Weirwood net in general, or due to the minds of the Greenseers and other wargs fading away inside ravens in the past. We know that the Greenseers would warg into ravens as messengers, so I think it's quite likely that when a Greenseer died, they would either enter the weirwood net and take control of ravens that perch in the weirwoods, or they would possess a raven directly and hang out in its body, perching in the weirwoods to tap back into the abilities to warg and see the future. Offspring of these ravens could intelligent on their own, or they could be born more receptive to the net. This would explain why there are fewer talking ravens now and why fewer ravens can fly to multiple castles, the greenseers are all but gone and the ravens have had many generations to breed back to a more "normal" state.

Winds plot for Theon: following a victory in the battle at the crofter's village, Stannis infiltrates Winterfell using Frey uniforms & takes the castle. Ramsay disguises himself to avoid capture, Theon recognizes him but doesn't say anything. Ramsay attempts to manipulate Theon into helping him kill Stannis but in the end, Theon kills Ramsay. That's an easy 6-8 chapters.

let me just say that roose boltons strategy in this instant is beyond foolish. Sending the armies of other houses to die while his men stay safe was a good strategy back in the war of the five kings back when people didn't know what he was doing and they were all ostensibly fighting for a Stark King in the North under Rooses command. But now that the Boltons have shown themselves to be treacherous and deciptful, why would the other less loyal houses fight for him. My money would be that they would go over to Stannis with no Roose Bolton looking over them, but even if they don't they ould probably have low morale fighting for a house they despise and either desert or rout quickly after making contact with Stannis. And let it be show that any commander who sends their forces out to be defeated in detail needs to brin their head out of their ass.

I reread the Theon/Roose chapter while on the subway today and have a theory... Is it possible Roose WANTED Theon to escape? I know Theon is basically Ramsay's pet and Roose supposedly knows he'd never run, but why would Roose openly admit to anyone that he lives in fear of the other Lords and names every player in the Grand Northern Conspiracy (minus Mors) to a high value prisoner like Theon Greyjoy, someone that could be ransomed off or possibly be taken by Stannis or the Ironborn due to his name? I could just be overthinking a guy getting his workplace drama off his chest, but I still think there might be something there.

Does anyone know another series that allows for this kind of analysis? I'm looking for something to read while I await the Winds of Winter.

Okay, technical question, about 7:23 In english books, when a person speaks and there is a new paragraph, it is opened with new quotations marks. So are we really sure "the North remembers" comes from Theon, and not still from Stannis?

I think some of Theon's thoughts and statements are founded in some fudged details the expedite delivery of exposition. I think some of it is just guesses, but some is just hand waving to get the reader the info.
