In this video I'll show you my method of smoothing up the action on a cap and ball revolver, using a new Uberti Model 1862 Police revolver.

    Your videos are always top notch, no pun intended. An old welders trick, wipe a dry cotton ball across something you suspect has burrs. The fibers will snag on the burrs and you can clean, file and smooth from there.

    Thanks for the how-to videos on cleaning up new guns. I have 2 Ubertis. The 1851 I bought about 4 years ago was pretty good out of the box and only needed minimal polishing. The 1860 I bought in 2018 functioned perfectly but the action felt like it was left out in the rain for 6 months. Unbelievably gritty and tight. It must have been made on a Monday by some guy that was hungover. It took A LOT of smoothing-out but it is very good now.

    Great video. I de-fanged the hammer on mine right after I bought it a couple years ago. Now I need to smooth out the cylinder pin. The action is timed correctly but only if I pull the hammer moderately. Thanks for showing and sharing this one. It's a great little revolver.

    I sent by Dragoon and my Pocket Police to Mike Brackett (45 Dragoon) and he did an action job, adjusted the length of the arbors, installed cap rakes and installed a coil spring to operate the hand. The Dragoon is a work of art and the triggers are the lightest on a revolver I have pulled But the Pocket Police still doesn't handle caps very well.

    In my experience cap sucking like you call them has way more to do with a soft hammer spring than the strike surface or notch , you can verify that simply by placing stiff spring between the main hammer spring and the wood handle or by adding a second exact same OEM spring on top of the original preventing the hammer to get pushed back at the ignition of the cap & powder pick pressure letting the cap being pushed out and eventually get strike by the hammer on his 2nd fall or falling down the frame messing the action . Even on my Uberti Walker on wish one i can't fire three or sometime three time without a cap falling into the action or being crunshed aigainst the frame where the arbor hole is located preventing the hammer to reach full course and so he can't hit the caps on the nipple . I had do three thing that have make it 99.9999% reliable even without cocking the next chamber with the gun pointed to the sky . 1st and easiest one , use of Remington N°10 cap exclusively they are the one that just perfectly match the nipple my walker come with . 2nd was the Spring added to push a bite more on the main hammer spring ( as you can't just add a second spring on top of the original due to the V shape spring design the walker was design with ) . And last but not least , making a V notch on the top face of each nipple facing the center of the cylinder so the gaz escape right there and split the cap open rather than explode it in multiple pieces ( i would have used Slixshot nipple but can't get them delivered in my european due to regulation on modifing any gun wish is clearly not allowed here ) . That said , i do not have your experience with percussion gun or general firearms in general Mike , but that's really what i figured out with the hammer spring .

    I've got an India made 1728 Charlyville musket. I bought it as new at a gun show for a couple hundred dollars. Overall it's pretty nice. Maybe they have improved their product line over the years. Ive watched a lot of videos of people shooting thier India made guns Most guys polish the lock up a bit. Some guys glass bed the breech-plug area in the stock. A few guys complained about having to drill the touch-hole.. After seeing what you do to expensive Italian guns I don't feel a bit sorry for guys that have to tune the lock on a $500 musket. I would like to see what you could do to a India made gun. Thanks for all you do. John Davis Jax fl

    Hi Mike, all Uberti revolvers have an issue with the arbor not being the right length. All current Pietta production have a correctly sized arbor where the barrel/cylinder gap is perfect hitting the wedge fully in. Optimal accuracy will never be accomplished with a gap that changes depending on how far the wedge is hammered in. IMO Uberti needs to solve that defect in their C&B revolvers. I drill and tap a hole in the end of all my 13 Uberti revolvers to support a set screw to optimize gap with a hammered in wedge. Only the Pietta Paterson doesn't have an optimal length arbor. I put a set screw in those two Patersons.

    @@griff7749 see my reply to Brad Potter above. My experience: Brad, my Uberti 1860 Army has the same problem. Can't even fit a 0.001" feeler gauge in between. Sometimes I would shoot it and thought the black powder was gumming up the arbor and causing hard cylinder rotation. Sometimes not. What it really was, was the metal expanding as it got hot and with no cyl gap, it was making the rotation difficult. I haven't fixed it yet, but I'm thinking of trying to take a few thousandths off the breech end of the barrel. Just a little. Otherwise a great gun.

    I was considering picking up an 1862 and/or an 1861, I've heard that the Cabela's/Pietta models have the ability to accept Howell of old west's gated conversions, and that the only real difference with the piettas 1861/1862 is that the '62 is shorter and has a fluted cylinder with 5 shots. That Uberti looks pretty slick out of the box.

    Hopefully you understand that the Model 1861 is built on the Colt 1851 Navy frame, and it is a full-sized belt pistol, like the 1851 and the 1860 Army, but the 1862 is built on the same frame as the .31 caliber 1849 Pocket Model. So it is essentially a pocket-sized .36 caliber.

    Hello sorry for writing under old video. I just bought it as my first ever black powder weapon. I have a problem. I bought is second hand and the seller didn't told me he WRAPPED THE ABOR WITH HYDRAULIC TEFLON TAPE. He did this because seemingly without tape the cylinder is moving forward and backward around 1mm. Is this normal? With the tape it is not moving forw-rearw but it doesn't rotate like yours. Should it rotate so fast? Should it move forward-rearward 1mm? (it moves in such a way when the cock is resting on a cylinder nipple).

  • @kirkrasmussen9629

    @kirkrasmussen9629

    No that’s not normal. Sounds like it could be an arbor that is too long and placing the forcing cone too far in front of your cylinder face. Additionally I’d check the bolt to cylinder notch fitment to make sure it is holding the cylinder correctly.
