Precision rifle FAQ.... Does adding a suppressor change performance?
Спорт
Ever wondered what happens when you add a suppressor to your long range rifle? In this video we'll take an in depth look at how adding a suppressor to a long range precision rifle impacts performance. First up we'll shoot my .308 bolt gun unsuppressed where we'll measure bullet velocity, group size and drop on multiple targets out to 1100 yds. Then we'll add the surefire socom suppressor and shoot the same course of fire noting any changes to the performance of the package.
Rifle details:
- pristine action
- proof research .308 carbon fiber barrel- 1 in 10" twist
- MDT XRS chassis
- accu-tac bipod
Optic:
- Riton 7 conquer 3-18 with PSR reticle
Ammunition:
- Federal gold medal match with the 175 gr sierra match king bullet

Absolutely love watching all your videos. I deeply appreciate the "gear review". It's one of the key reasons your videos are at the top of my lists to watch. And the timelines are another plus for when I go back and re-watch the video's again. Your content is spot on for tips of what works and why. Keep up the great work. If I remember correctly your in WA State. I live near Puget Sound area and have an cousin in the Dalles area. If you ever think of hosting a shoot I know we would both love to come and hang out. Great channel, great format, visuals and presentation. Love the presentation style, the way you describe the intent of the video and then walk us through step by step in a logical sequence. You're asking and answering all those questions that pop into shooters minds which is great.

From the uk here, we have been using suppressors for many years, on centrefire riflei have seen points of impact changes from 2in upto 10 in high,depending on barrel contour,and very rarely an horizontal shift in poi, Best wishes, your vids are very good,rgds steve

Great job as always! I think it would be easier to visualize the data if you summarized it on a single piece of paper or slide. It can be difficult to remember the numbers from suppressed vs unsuppressed but having something like suppressed vs unsuppressed velocity and the drops side by side for the different ranges you fired at would make the summary much easier to comprehend. Also, 2.6 SD on that FGMM is insane!

I've seen pretty much the same results as you. POI shift, usually low, similar to slightly faster velocity, same accuracy. The main difference is enjoying the reduced noise and recoil.

POI shift is expected but it needs to be repeatable and consistent. IMO for long range Thunder Beast is where it’s at.
First of all you are a talented shooter. The hat I Think would look much better with a triangle instead of being round.
Very nice scenery
Good one
You’d never lay bare ground like that here the ticks would have a field day….very bad in eastern Ky…I lay on 10’ tarp and still get eat up…can’t hardly walk to my target…hundreds I’ve picked off me…as a .308 man I like that setup….always good to se ya brother….matt
Good video, from what I have seen on another video that with a can on your rifle that it speeds up because of the extra length.
At 25 yards, my AR15 shoots 1 inch lower with my suppressor vs without. It is a fairly large suppressor, barrel has a medium contour profile. It is free floated; however the barrel nut isn't the most robust.
So, I started to watch, and you triggered my OCD🙄 in first minute and have had a shot and a beer.😵💫 So headed back to watch the video to see the outcome as I have wandered about this a lot. Ha my goal is to let the performance of the gear in each video do the talking. No clue where the idea that 308 is useless past 800yds comes from but as you can see here that’s very much so false haha
Having the view through scope was wonderful. But I can't hold that steady. That was something to see...just how steady you hold position.
Great test! Methodical and analytical w/usable data. Thanks! 1 question though. Which ballistics app are you using?
I find your video results consistent with my experience and I really enjoy your video content. Very informative and genuine real world results.
I suspect the carbon fiber barrel may be less affected by heating as you send rounds down range. An all steel barrel might behave differently. Barrel profile is also a big consideration.
Love your concept here. Good Work. Now the hat. Get some color in there as it is a touch sleepy looking. Or is that just me!?

groups will tighten
If you are sniping it whatever drop you may get you will compensate anyway right. I suspect a little drop with slight difference in less velocity at longer range. But it's so much better on my ears and you won't be scaring all the rest of the game off.
Interesting, I wonder how the suppressor would effect shot groups with different barrel lengths, thinkness/design, and materials. You would think the suppressor (different lengths and weights) effects the barrel harmonics and shot grouping...now thinking about it, this might be reflected by the impact locations.
I'm just getting into shooting with silencers and got the Garmin Zero to check velocity difference. Going to shoot out to 1000 in a couple days and interested to see the difference for myself.
It will move POI based on added suppressor weight (which changes barrel harmonics) - all else should remain the same. I think. 🙂
Great video! Great results! Question- why did you choose to wear the ear pro with the can? Was it still to loud?
@MountainsMulletsMerica
6 ай бұрын
Yes, SuperSonics through a suppressed rifle are still too loud for me to repeatedly shoot without ear pro. The can makes things much more comfortable but far from quiet.

@@MountainsMulletsMerica interesting. Did not know that. I’m thinking I may get the Q Thunder chicken.
Without having watched the video yet I know that groups will shift. So long as you can unmount and re-mount with repeatability then those groups should stay consistent. Don't expect to be on target when you remove the can, obviously. So opt to zero the gun with the suppressor mounted or unmounted and leave it alone. If you want it suppressed but have to remove it every time for transportation purposes, then use a quick mount system that's repeatable. People seem to hate Q products due to K. Brittingham or whatever his name is, but I happen to enjoy my Thunder Chicken. Thinking about picking up a 300 PRC and testing out some super long distance shooting using the can...
@Bizill75

AFA super long distance, I'll predict the suppressor not slowing the bullet but rather speeding it up and necessitating elevation adjustment accordingly. Seems the suppressor will slow it, but I think it might speed it up. Let's see as I continue to watch your vid...

Yes it’s taken a couple impacts but it’s designed for that. That part of the light is a flexible type of rubber that self heals if a bullet hits it. The actual hard parts of the light are protected behind the plate. Awesome tool for long range shooting

I know you’ve probably answered this question in the past but what shooter app do you find the most consistent? Dialing in my 6ARC with Hornady 4dof hasn’t proven itself effective for me. It’s off at least a few 10ths on average compared to other ballistic calculators
On the 100 Yard Zero you can see the Suppressed have a much wider MOA than the Unsuppressed.
.6 mil elevation shift on my 30 cal. Seems to be similar. Small velocity increase as well, 10-25 fps?
My man.
I wonder if a flow through suppressor would have less of an effect on the standard deviation?
My poi shift is exactly .5 mil lower at 100yds out of a 26” Desert Tech SRS A1 using a silencerco .30 cal suppressor. Your shift looked to be the same. Wondering if a “low shift” is common? Reading comments. Thank you for providing your very interesting content. Thoughtful, helpful video!!

Oh man a level on the rifle is an absolute must for long range shooting and I actually run one on all my rifles. The Spuhr mounts have a level built in, or I run a send it electronic level. Great question
Excellent video and shooting 👍 For what it's worth: " favor = 1/2 of the distance from center to the edge of the target. Edge of target is self explanatory. Everything else is described in mils/minutes. Keep up the great work. Your videos are top notch!
What app do you use for dialing the distance?
Correct me if I’m wrong here, but wouldn’t the dope for the ranges be fairly identical since the POA/POI shift for the can was already delt with when the rezero happened?
@MountainsMulletsMerica
Жыл бұрын
Well that’s the main thing I’m showing in this video and yes I’d say the results shown in the video match your comment exactly. Seems like a lot of people think suppressors drastically change velocity or range and if that were the case then the bullet drop would also be different. Given velocity barely changes though bullet drop is nearly identical.
So I watched one where a guy was doing a big magnum and a can added like 200 yrds to it they said it was cuz there’s more pressure for a little longer. Urs makes more since to me but do u think a bigger cartridge would affect that?

No surprises here. Too many misconceptions with suppressors due to games and lack of experience with them. I like how you break it down barney style. I would like to see the repeatability of POI shift between taking the suppressor on and off. Although with it being a surefire can it probably is gonna be consistent.

Interesting…. Guess I didn’t realize that was a thing. Do you know which other gun tubers have put out content showing the fliers from carbon fiber barrels? Nothing I’m terribly worried about though, adding the can really tightened things up.
