Ar battle zero deep dive- optic mount height

Спорт

How does optic height impact the performance of your battle zero? In this video we take an in depth look at how a 1.54" optic mount height performs vs a 1.93" optic mount height with a 36yd zero out to 300 yards. We put rounds on cardboard at the 100, 200 and 300 yard lines which provides us solid real world data to review at the end of the video.

These videos have been immensely useful to me. I got a short barreled ar, and the ballistic reticles of Lpvo scopes don't correspond with the lower velocity of the short barrel ar. It is a much better idea to have a battle zero in such an instance. Thanks again for all your knowledge. Much appreciated

Good stuff. I bought both mounts because I couldn’t decide what was more comfortable and useful. I ended up using the 1.54”, because it’s what I’m used to. I guess now I have an extra mount, so you know what that means… time for a new build!

It's important to note that when adding your mount to the rifle, you need to measure the distance between the center line bore of the barrel to the center line of the scope and inputting this measurement into your ballistics calculator. For example: The 1.93 mount PLUS the distance of the center line bore to the top of the picatinny rail gives you 3.14 inches. This makes for a 57 yard zero with this optic height and works very well out to 300yds.

This is about what I expected, great seeing the breakdown and proof! No one else is providing this much data with testing, video and explanations; thank you for the service. Speaking as a vet I can tell you, at least from where I did my training - new recruits would get ahead faster and save a several days of being baffled on the range, by watching a few of your videos before ever pulling a trigger or listening to the trainers we had available at the time.

I know you're too young for the reference.... But after watching you drill steel over and over at insane ranges with all kinds of calibers, when you held up that cardboard drawing to describe zero again I heard that quote from Rocky IV in my head.... "He's not a machine. He's a man." I don't know how a guy with your arsenal and your skills keeps coming off as "a regular guy".... but you continue to deliver. Never get an art department .

Great video. I’d love to see the differences of these with a 100 yard zero because that’s where many people zero their LPVO’s.

It would be pretty similar at 100. Maybe a couple inch variance at 300yd between the different optic mount heights because it's such a flat zero the drop (for point of aim point of impact) would be more significant. But with a reticle you essentially should collect dope so you can hold over. Battle zero is more for things like a red dot where there is no measurements in the reticle to know where to hold and maybe with a magnifier where you could hold center mass and get hits. Taller the optic, the more lobbing of the round you're doing. So with something like a unity mount(2.26" height) you want like a 60-70 yd zero for the smallest variance above and below holding center mass out to 300. So what I mean is he's only using the lpvo for the magnification to get as accurate a comparison as possible.

just got an lpvo, it came with a 1.5 mount. first range day after zeroing and it was a pain to get behind that scope. i couldn't get in the eye box fast and i felt like i had to lean over my rifle to get into the eye box. tried a friends lpvo mounted at 2.04, instant bliss, even shooting table mounted out to 300m was so much easier. decided to split the difference a little and go for a 1.93 adm mount, no regrets... im 6' 3", so my rifle setup needs to accommodate my big head and long neck, not the other way around.

Location makes everything different. I live in East TN, where people think the sights need to be as close to the bore as possible. But in this area, most hunters get their kills at point-blank and rarely have to shoot beyond 90M. The real fun is the unit of measure argument, where they assume you have brain damage if you use Mils rather than MOA. The competition crew have so many opinions, it is better to turn off your hearing when around them. Many of them believe in misleading those they could be competing against. I have always tried to keep my scopes around 2" above the bore, because of the size of the scope. Long range scopes need a 1" riser to fit on a AR. A topic that needs addressing is twist rate. Most talk about stability, but they have no clue. I have a Savage 110 in 270 Win, with a 1/10 twist rate. I noticed in reloading for this gun to get every shot fired to cut one hole, I had to load at the max pressure rating for the gun. For 30 years, I tried to overcome the accuracy issue with lighter loads and failed. Now I am learning that a 1/8 twist would have fixed the problem. The best accuracy I could achieve with this Savage was a 4" group at 300M. I have moved on to a 6.5 Grendel.

It seems like ideally you’d just get to test your individual ammo. Personally I have a BDC for my 5.56. It’s a shorter barrel and running the numbers it lined up really nicely with a 7.62 reticle. Then I took my reticle and set the elevation based off the 300 hash and basically zeroed it at that distance on that mark, lessening the error through the range of marks. So my 200 mark might actually be 235 or something that doesn’t really matter and my 500 mark is more like 488 or something, instead of dead nuts at 200, leading to 415 or something at 500 if that makes sense.
