Shooting off a tripod- the basics

Спорт

Thinking of purchasing a tripod so that you can take your precision rifle game to the next level? This exact thought is what inspired me to purchase my first shooting tripod earlier this year. Now that I've got experience shooting multiple rifles off of multiple tripods, I want to share my tips and tricks with you. This video will provide an in depth look at the basics of using a tripod to improve your long range shooting. In this video I cover topics such as tripod and head selection, attaching the rifle to the tripod, standing/kneeling/ sitting positions. After watching this video you'll be excited to pick up a tripod for yourself and head to the range!

Using a tripod never called to me.... But I'm always curious about what all the fuss is about. Your thorough and thoughtful explanations gave me all of the feel of it with none of the expense of checking it out myself. While you confirmed tripods aren't for me... you also confirmed that this channel is. I appreciate your work!

I recently started using a tripod as well.. it’s great for all the reasons you have mentioned. I appreciate not having to lay down in the grass out here in West Texas with all the bugs and stickers. Also, knee high grass and brush makes for VERY poor visibility in the normal prone position with a bipod. Lastly, I tried it all splayed out in the prone position and was Shocked out how stable it is with a rear bag, much more so than with a bipod and rear bag. Who knew!!?? Great video, thanks!

Great primer on tripods. I would say you the way you demonstrated the various positions you had them all a little too tall. If you use the rule of thumb "top of ballhead level with your nipples", you'll be able to get behind the rifle more and control recoil better especially with a heavier recoiling rifle. Your advice of 2 legs back and 1 forward is perfect, but you can also improve recoil control even more by shortening the forward leg just slightly from the back 2. As far as ballheads, I highly recommend the Really Right Stuff Anvil-30. It is incredibly stable and super quick to adjust on the fly. With a solid set of legs (I use some Amazon Innorel RT90C legs) and that ballhead, making standing shots out to 1k yards is no problem. I've found that a good tripod setup is an absolute must for hunting. So easy to get over vegetation and more versatile than bipods. Great video, keep more coming man!

My casual observation seemed like the scope camera was more stable with the tripod more at the front of the rifle. I will try your tips for setup and both positions with my 308 and check back when i have meaningful results.

Nice job!👍🏼 I am a Predator Hunter and have done most of my shooting off of tripods. So many people on KZread trying to push products or discuss how to do something and have no idea of exactly what/why or how to use a tripod effectively. You did a great job on this “basics” video. Keep up the great work

At 21:14, you’re talking about snugging up the ball head while aiming low and then tensioning as you come up to target. So at trigger pull, the existing tension your body is placing on the rifle is in the direction of muzzle rise and the ball head’s slop has been minimized in the direction of muzzle rise, which would increase the restricting nature of the ball head on muzzle rise. I guess your experience indicates the latter wins out over the former?

One thing you can try, (I've seen it taught both ways) is to actually put the 2 legs forward and keep the one leg back. It helps eliminate that hop you get out the front leg.

This was a great video. I have had a the Bog Deathgrip for 2 years. I just switched it to a Ball Head and that's a plus. The Bog's have been popular because most retailers carry them. That Sunwayfoto is a fantastic tripod. I believe Sunwayfoto has a similar tripod that's cheaper than $600 .

As always a lot of key info in your discussion and demonstrations. I've found it hard to keep my rifle stable when using a tripod with a ball head. I've always shot standing with the tripod so i will now try some other positions. Unlike prone or a bench there are many places in the setup to induce slop no matter how hard the ball head is cinched down.

I see you often check muzzle velocities and consistencies of ammo you use. That's good and very important for long range shooting. But there's one more important thing: advertisized BCs of bullets by manufacture s! Get Labradar or similar equipment in order to check that out. Cheers!

I can see how a tripod would be very useful for long range precision shooting and even in some hunting applications. I cannot see how it would be useful in a "combat" scenario as well as most hunting scenarios as its a lot of extra weight and is assuredly unwieldy. Regardless, another incredible and informative video! Thank you!

Never used a tripod. But if you flipped the tripod around 180 degrees and lined the single leg up with the target and riffle wouldn’t it be more sturdy with the recoil. Seems like that leg going directly behind it would take a lot of the recoil. Also with it clipped in towards the front of the riffle with arca adapter
