regardless, practicing too fast is a pretty bad bass hobbit.
Josh makes these kind of videos that gives you the urge to pick up your bass immediately and start playing. No showing off. No flexing. Just pure motivation. Thanks mate.

I'm watching this on a 4 hour train ride, now I really really can't wait to get home and play some bass 😂
When Josh says "it'll take a long time" to get rid of the flying fingers, take it to heart. I've been playing for years, but never really focused on economy of motion until recently. I've been focused on proper technique for about four months and I've improved but still am not to where I want to be. Don't get discouraged if you're not keeping your fingers down after only a couple weeks of practice!

Assumed fast bass lines came down to fast fingers (certainly helps!). After a few years playing, discovered there's more than meets the eye; efficiency of motion matters, i.e., when a guitarist's/bassist's fingers appear to be moving 'slow' relative to fast, clear notes heard, they're elite.

Can relate to that! My parents never let me take music lessons as a teenager. Picked up a bass at 19 and played more seriously when I started music lessons with a teacher at 25. Now 43 playing music with bands since my 29th birthday. My father's behavior has become my music drive never to quit!
This guy is great. I’m halfway through his (paid) lessons and in less than 2 weeks I can play along with my (hugely more experienced) mates in their band. This is no paid promo (I don’t even know the dude…I live in Australia!) but I guarantee you, if you want to learn the bass, pay him his money…it’s not much…and have him teach you.
I have to admit, when I first started going through this video my first instinct was to blow through the exercise, but it's more challenging than I anticipated; especially trying to play it clean and clear. And I've been playing for over 30 years! Thanks for keeping the old dog in line!

I had this bookmarked for later reference and just got around to it today. True, it is a little tricky to play clean. On first few passes I kept stylishly sliding in to the 6th fret instead of just playing it plain as intended. It was actually hard to stop myself from doing that.

Facts.
If you can play bass with people instead of sitting in a room on your own, you might find the inspiration and excitement of playing along with others keeps you going. Especially if you can gig. That’s how it’s gone for me. I have been lucky to play with some amazing musicians.i am completely rubbish at bass the weakest link in the band. But I practice my ass off to try and not let down the people I am in a band with. He is right! Only find inspiration from others. So what your not as good as others. They are doing their thing. You are doing yours. Least your playing .Things of great value are seldom achieved instantly . If music was easy it would be boring
I've been a professional music educator for 4 decades. This is the best bass teaching video that I've seen. I'm so glad that I've stumbled across your channel. I'll quickly refer you to all my students.

Music teacher starts a youtube video and walks out for a smoke break, joking... I'm taking the Bass Buzz course and I'm having so much fun with it, Josh is an awesome teacher. I'm 58 years old and my elementary music teacher put me in a corner with a triangle because I couldn't sing in tune. Totally turned me off from learning an instrument at a young age. But I'm back! And I can groove!
A quick tip from a hobbit for all the other hobbit bassists out there: If you are just starting out with this exercise and you are really struggling spreading your hobbit sized fingers across 4 frets, you can move the exercise a dot or two higher up the neck 😁
@martinmix7464

And micro-shifting isn't against any rules. I've got small hands and can stretch enough to fret a note on the 4th fret while keeping my index finger down but it's prone to a lot of buzzing because I'm short of the actual fret. Shifting a bit or even rocking my hand down does wonders and after it became natural, my playing became a lot better. Glad to see other Hobbits here!

fellow hobbit hear, still just learning but I wish I hadn't listened to the naysayers that said you needed large hands to play when I was younger and just tried it.
Alright so, gotta say it: this is the best bass class video on the internet. And having watched only this I can bet is the best bass channel on KZread right now. Everything is on point; good delivery, no stalling, comprensible explanations, great sense of humor, LOTR memes. This is peak bass
The effort you put in is outstanding! You are the best teacher and I love how you play with Squires and not expensive instruments... you rock! You really make learning bass what its supposed to be... fun!
Josh, you are one if the few bass coaches here on KZread who can make practicing things like this fun and entertaining. And you don't need to apologize for being funny.
I can't wait to practice after work!!... as usual, but especially with these exercises 🤩 thank you!
I have been playing for 30 years, and I still love watching your videos. Always learning cool things. Thanks man!
This exercise was truly outstanding. It pinpointed exactly what I needed to practice, is easy enough to play without an amp, and wasn't so repetitive that it would make me lose focus. Incredible work! 🙇♀
Thanks Josh! Great exercise and PDF. I really appreciate all your great content AND your sense of humor!
At 65 yrs old I'm taking up bass guitar. I've been a recording engineer and mastering engineer at various times but retired now and having fun. Good lesson/teacher!
A bought my first bass literally a few days ago and have been watching dozens (hundreds?) of videos for a total beginner and this is the best I’ve found. Thanks so much, Josh. I've been watching you for a long time and you have a great delivery for a teacher. Flying fingers has been the bane of my playing since I was a guitarist. Great video as always.
6 weeks ago I started bass lessons irl. I'm 54 and always loved bass, but never thought of playing it myself, now suddenly I thought, hey why not. I'm never gonna excel or anything, but just to play along with some simpler tunes would make me happy. I am gonna do this excercise daily now. Not even at 100bpm yet, but whatever, I'll get there. You're stimulating me to do more, so thanks and keep up the good work 👍
I just love this video, it’s not « PLAY THIS EXERCISE TO BECOME AN UTRLA BASSIST » and it’s juste one stupid exercise that I’ve been playing for months. It’s so much more than an exercise, it’s how to use the exercise in an intelligent manner. Learning how to approach learning. Because very few people will teach you how to learn properly. Thanks josh you are awesome 🤘🏻
Josh is the absolute best teacher! Amazing musician plus great teacher! Would love to see him play with a band.
This is the walking practice I didn't know I needed. Thanks for the informative and FUN lesson. 🔥🎸
Great video josh thanks for all you do .. your approach is really resonating with me at my beginning level.
Very generous of you to make this video.

Been doing this for about 5 months now and Josh is right. This exercise helps with everything. Best exercise out there.

Thanks I'm recently starting bass using my friends bass and your channel is helping a lot
I really needed this josh, thank you. I've been struggling personally with finding a good practice routine and staying motivated

Incredibly informative, great positive encourageing vibe, love your humour. Your videos always make me want to pick up my bass and start playing for hours. Great, great work!
The example that starts at 10:00 is awesome! I finally was able to understand "walking from one chord to the other". Thanks!

I’ve been doing this practice every day for three months, never picked up a guitar before then- and it’s considerably improved my playing. The overall sound quality has changed form sounding incomplete with that metal scraping sound to a much cleaner bass tone. My finger dexterity has improved a lot too, and it’s much easier to go back and forth between my index and middle finger ‘plucking’ than just using my index for everything. At this point I’d say the most ‘complex’ baseline I can play is Burnin Love by Elvis, and I’m very proud of myself to see such progress. Thank you very much for this video!
This exercise is truly useful. I've been having problems with clear execution of couple of basslines recently, got fed up and put them on the back burner. Around the same time I started doing this drill and yesterday I came back to my nemesis basslines. Guess what? They sound much better now and I feel more control in both fretting and plucking hand. Amazing stuff Josh, I love your channel.
Josh is the kinda guy I like to watch even tho I play bass for years know just because of three things: first he's super nice to listen, second even advanced players can sometimes learn new stuff and third ... Did he really just tapped the chords and played a walking bass line ? Damn josh, keep your great work up.
This exercise completely unlocked bass practice for me! Thank you so much! I went from hardly touching my bass to practicing happily every day!

I got a Bass for my birthday an now i have to learn to play it, so much to learn, now i have to get a amp so i can hear my mistakes an how it sounds, I'm so excited though! 🎸🎸😊
Level 3 is also good for pick players, as it teaches you to alternate pick when moving between strings instead of doing two consecutive downstrokes or upstrokes, which is something that beginners on pick usually do (me included). Neat exercise, Josh!

Hey Josh, great excercises, whacky humour and top notch production value. Bravo!!
Excellent video! I still have issues with flying fingers. Moving through this with a focus on controlling them helps. It's also fun to apply the theory and shapes and think about where the next note needs to go to move around the circle of fifths without even looking at the PDF. Love the videos!

Just gonna join my voice to the chorus of praise for this excellent bit of teaching! I’ve been a professional music educator for almost a decade and have experience on several instruments but am just starting on the bass (well, ukulele-bass - but it’s the same notes!). It was so great to find a video that has super practical stuff I can practice now as a beginner but that wasn’t also explaining what half-steps are ;) This was JUST what I’ve been looking for! And since I’m self-teaching with videos instead of taking lessons it’s great to know some bad habits to look out for and how to fix them. This video truly has so much wonderful content. And I enjoyed all the LOTR and bits of your personality that came through as well :) Bravo sir!!!!
Great advice. I am definitely going to recommend this video to my students! Thank you
Holy theory realisation BassMan!!!! Your PDF is actually taking us through the cycle of 4ths and 5ths !!!!! Mucho appreciato.
