    Hi Chris, Thank you for another very informative video. Based on your suggestions, I am now using the FLEXUS method book. Not only is it helping to strengthen my flexibility, it is also a great source for long tones, lip bend and much more!Thank you for this recommendations. 🙏🏽 P.s., Your tip about using a Metronome has been a game changer for my practice sessions.

    Hi Virgil! Yes, the metronome keeps us honest and is a source of measurement. We can actually improve by measuring! That’s pretty exciting!

    Thank you. I am looking forward into coming back into playing my trumpet again for the purpose of worship but also to get back into this hobby I miss. It was straightforward back in the day when I had my music teacher in high school, but now I am on my own I am glad you are providing the help that I need. It is far to easy to be discouraged considering it has been a while since I've played on a daily basis, so having some structure is key. Thanks again!

    Hey man, just dropping by to say thanks for your amazing tips! I'm just starting out on the trumpet and your videos have been very helpful, especially because they are the only ones I've found that uses the number system. I've found the number system has been really helpful for me to learn scales and progressions more efficiently across multiple instruments.

    These sorts of practice routines are like flossing your teeth or leg day and I tend to rush them in order to get to the fun stuff, actual music. You've inspired me to try to make the routine fun, maybe I'll make some games out of it or try to see long tones AS actual music. Anyway, thanks for the great video.

    Chris.. You got it !! My practice routine consists of LONG TONES to start w/dynamics. Then LIP SLURS. If I have any difficulty I stop and begin to slowly get through whatever glitch I may have. Then, I start LIP TRILLS.. If I feel comfortable, I take a short break… 20 minutes to a half hour and begin playing Clarke studies. I spend another 30 minutes developing endurance and my range using Clarke studies.. slur and tongue. Finally, I work on a piece of Music for The rest of the evening. I also believe in taking breaks between each of these aspects of play. I also believe in taking a day off completely from the trumpet. Thanks Chris.. Keep ‘em coming !!

    Chris, Thank you, I have recently had some questions about what was recommended in a practice session. Your video goes a long way to answering those questions. I would spend 90% of my time on exercises and wondering if this was the right way to go.

    If you’re able, have 2 (or more) practice sessions a day. I believe that’s the best way to approach it, whether your session is 30/45/60 minutes. Having a rest period goes a long way. If you’re unable to walk away and return then simply split everything in half in order to fit in the time frame you have (though I find this not to be as effective).

    @@ChrisDavisTrumpet Thank you for the advice. I am retired and spend 1 to 1.15 hours after breakfast and the same again after dinner at night as I hate TV and enjoy practicing. For a while I was also doing 1 hours after lunch but found I was not getting enough recovery time. I quite enjoy lip slurs and flexibility exercises and can easily spend 45 mins just on that. I have only been playing 18months after a 50yr break and the first 12 mnths was only 1 hour per day but rather disappointed with progress so stepped it up. If the chops would last I would spend more time. Based on your advice I will work at scheduling my time in each session to cover a greater variety.

    Thank you! Is range important with Caruso long tones (think you only played G to C in half steps?). Any value in going higher, lower?

  • @ChrisDavisTrumpet

    @ChrisDavisTrumpet

    Leroy Jackson yes, there is value there. The first study is only 6 notes (warm-up) but the second study goes as high as the player can play. Also, other methods use Caruso concepts but extend the range in either direction. Yes, there is certainly value in extending the range!

    @ChrisDavisTrumpet That first exercise has two more parts that didn't wind up in the book. Continue up from C to G (two whole notes using the breath attack then tongue pattern). Part three is from High G to C. With part 1, I was taught to build toward 5 minutes using the repeats.

    Unfortunately, I only play trumpet when I feel like it. I used to love playing the trumpet but now I only play when I feel like it. As for lip slurs, I can't do those because it makes me dizzy. I've been playing trumpet since 1989 but after my sister gave me a concussion, I've been getting dizzy playing slurs. I've heard of lip slurs but not lip bends. I hate reading sheet music. I always hated it. I usually play whatever's in my mind at the time. The method books I have are from when I was in school. I only use them for the trumpet fingering chart.
