Practice: Converting between Moles and Grams
Converting between moles and grams is a fundamental chemistry skill. In this video there are six problems with explanations. The problems start easy and then become more difficult. At the end of the video you should be comfortable converting from moles to grams and grams to moles.
One method to mole conversions is to use something called the Mole Map. This provides a visual tool to know when to multiple and when to divide. The Mole Map is also useful for conversions between the mole and liters as well as atoms and molecules.

The mole map is based on conversion factors, which using the factor-label/dimensional analysis is another way to convert between moles and grams. The conversion factor used is the molar mass of the element or compound. This is the preferred method for mole conversions.
Conversions should be automatic (you don’t really need to think about it much to find the answer). This requires lots of practice converting between moles and grams. The more you practice the less effort that is required, and you can focus on solving the bigger chemistry problems (like reaction stoichiometry).
The video is organized like a worksheet where you answer the problems and the check your answers.

Wayne Breslyn Dr.B i’ve got a question if you don’t mind. When we exhale on a cold day we see water vapor from our breath condensing. But my question is the following is it the cold air in front of us that gets saturated with water vapor thus water condenses or is it our warm air that gets cooled and can’t hold the same amount of water vapor thus the water condenses. This question got me thinking and i thought i should ask it away.

I'd say it's the warm air from our breath hitting the cold air and condensing. Sort of like breathing on a cold window and having it fog up. There is a large difference between our breath and the air on a cold day...

Hi sir how do you calculate the estimate?
Hey 6:58 I could be wrong, but with this problem, should the answer not contain only 2 sig figs (ie 27g) considering the question is 0.37 Which is only 2 sig figs.
wayne, i love the way you've explained and understood better than anyone, but can you be a bit louder next time while recording?!!! just a humble request from my side wayne.
Cool

what's the use of 22.4 in the mole map?
@wbreslyn
3 жыл бұрын
It is for converting an ideal gas from moles to liters. So if you had 44.8L of an ideal gas, like O2, you could divide by 22.4 to get the number of moles of O2.
Say for the 0.37 in grams I got 74.1 and how did you get the 74.09 grams? Is there some secret as to how you get that?
@ragnar53104

I'm pretty sure your answer is right, your answer is just rounded unlike his. Calculators will give you different answers also.
In the 1st problem how did u get 43.25gram~2.5mol ??
@wbreslyn
5 жыл бұрын
Since one mole of water is about 18 grams per mole (that's the molar mass) I figured two moles would be 36 grams. Since I have 43.25 grams, and this is more than 36 g, I know I have more than 2 moles. But 3 moles of water would be too, much. So I estimated 2.5 moles. Estimating this way makes you think (a good thing!) and it helps you know if your final answer makes sense. Over time you estimating becomes very fast and you almost do it automatically. ---- Dr. B
