Power Metal Opera Singer? Vocal ANALYSIS of Atilla's insanely powerful vocals from Powerwolf
I'm convinced that if you put Karsten "Atilla" Brill on an opera stage, he would absolutely slay it. We're checking out one of Powerwolf's new releases following their European and US Tour announcement, and I'm once again digging that epic sound they so easily put together!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Powerwolf performing "My Will Be Done" for the first time.

It's definitely great to see a reaction that's more than just "wow, that's a crazy noise they made." I've genuinely enjoyed her breaking down metal music and talking about the skill, techniques, and musical theory used in these songs. I feel she was surprised herself at first, breaking down these songs, that it's more than just noise, it's talented musicians making music they love, and she caught the bug.

This is mainly to the fact that they strictly dont produce anything they cant do live. As Attila said, "If we cant do any part live, you wont hear it from us." Every song they make is focused on playability in their concerts. For "Army of the night", he needed to adapt to another breathing technique to make it work. And it worked, as nearly no fan can sing this at the concerts because they would faint bcs of air.

Had the luck to see them live in July; their on-stage performance is absolutely amazing ! Atilla's voice feel even more powerful when you have him a few meters from you 🤩🤘
The whole time I was thinking part of the melody seemed so familiar, wrecking my head over where I'd heard it before: it's Nena's 1984 hit "Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann" ("Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime" in the English version) that shares part of the chorus sequence! Not saying they stole it (there's just so many possible melodies in western tonality) but as a German band I'm sure it lived in the back of their heads when writing this.

I remember having a similar 'ah ha!' moment with Alestorm's "Scraping the Barrel", the vocal melody in the chorus is almost identical to the guitar melody about half-way through Iron Maiden's "The Prophecy". Although in that case if it was stolen it'd be thematically on point for the song at least...

I love how you're enjoying this power metal rabbithole! Your interview with Hansi was just such an amazing couple of hours. I can't say enough how much Battle Beast and their singer Noora Louhimo fits neatly into this arc. Here in Finland, music is taught from year one at school alongside languages so there's an extensive degree of musical fluency here and many musicians with technical competence that might not have discovered their range of abilities if introduced to music at a later age. Either that or you could look at it as the musical "muscle" is developed from an early age where its use becomes most natural like riding a bike. Battle Beast have a bunch of music videos around KZread such as "Eye Of The Storm" which is straight power metal pop, however their older track "Straight To The Heart" as part of the Tuska Utopia series, filmed live in a forest during the pandemic is a perfect slice of how they sound live, and how Noora's voice is just an absolute powerhouse! Operatic, but with a very Bonnie Tyler-esque sort of husky tonality to her voice and 10x more powerful in delivery. Amazing to witness firsthand in the front row as well!
Beautiful to see you embrace Metal so intensely now! I've been discovering Powerwolf myself over the past year and now they are the absolute perfection of Powermetal for me. I recommend checking out their orchestral version of the sacrament of sin album as well as the newer single sainted by the storm.
Because you mentioned the video production quality - this was done by VDPICTURES and they always deliver amazing visuals. Once you have seen a few you can tell from the start who was responsible for the visuals. There's a reason why almost all Lord of the Lost videos are produced by them, but also Faun, and a number of other European metal bands.
Great video again Elizabeth! It's so cool watching you fall in love with metal! It really is amazing music isn't it? Peace ❤️☺️

Thank you! I love watching your videos such great insights!! Would love to see what you make of Atilla's voice in one of Powerwolf's more ballad type songs such as Where the Wild Wolves have Gone or Let there be night.
Similarly to Atilla being a 'different kind' of vocalist, I'd love it if you could take a look at a Falconer song, maybe Upon the Grave of Guilt or Mindtraveller. It might be a bit difficult since they disbanded a few years ago, but their singer has an extensive theater background and it gave the band (especially their first album) a really unique and almost haunting sound. Definitely worth a listen, even if you can't do a reaction!

Basically playing the whole S\self-titled FALCONER debut through would be worth consideration... :))) My favorite off it is "Lord of the Blacksmiths" - such a catchy rhythmic tune with great vox and the heaviest Metal instrument used in the chorus... you fellow fans will know! \m/ That sound is impossible to miss, and I kind of do not want to spoil. ;) Wait, some church bells actually weigh (literally) a ton, so the instrument FALCONER did use must be the 2nd heaviest, lol! Also, concerning later FALCONER opuses - long time favorites to suggest would have to include "The Clarion Call", "Dreams and Pyres", and "Svarta Ankan" ("The Black Widow")... Maybe, one day, Elizabeth gets to do tea (or better, a collab?) with Mathias Blad.

the reason i started watching the channel at all is bc she breaks down singers vocals and is describing how vocal magic works physically and i just cant get over it. music is magic, and this is one of the reasons i stopped listening to music with lyrics for the most part. you must be vigilant and guard your mind from influence.
I stumbled across this channel only recently, but I have absolutely fallen in love with it. Many of these videos are of songs and bands that I have listened to for most of my life, and seeing the reactions that Elizabeth has is just awesome :) On a side note, I couldn't see any Hammerfall songs on here yet, so I would like to suggest them. Joacim Cans has an amazing voice in my opinion. Perhaps songs like Last Man Standing or Always Will Be, but I'd also be interested to see what other people think.
Awesome analysis. I really enjoyed watching it :) - and I totally agree with you on the opera stage idea - wanna see the faces of the audience xD. Just a couple of things I'd like to add: For someone having German as native language the Latin pronunciation is fairly easy. At least if you use classical Latin and not ecclesiastical Latin. So it is no surprise that this sounds well done by him. Though the Latin itself in the lyrics is understandable but not always grammatically correct ^^ I liked a lot that you pointed out how powerful his voice is during the music. On tour, he pulls this off a couple of shows in a row. Quite impressive - and for me the perfect voice for the more fantasy inspired theme so many power metal bands go for. I mean most fantasy themed stories are heavily inspired by the middle ages... The only other vocalist that comes to my mind that also could incorporate this impression into Power Metal was Sir Christopher Lee, who also has had classical training and sang a duet with the Power Metal band Rhapsody of Fire, named "the wizard's dream". But to be fair, I am normally not listening to western metal that much as many bands bored me. Powerwolf is the band that got me back into listening more to western bands. My expertise lies in Japanese metal, where most vocalists sound very different. If you have the time you might want to listen to a band called "Dir en Grey" - their vocalist Kyo is exceptional. Very distinctive voice, many different techniques. I'd recommend "Revelation of Mankind" from their 2014 release. Shows a broad spectrum of his techniques and I know from experience that he can pull that off live. For his higher notes, "Uroko" is also a suggestion to listen to as in Revelation they are only audible sparsely.
I saw them in November last year and he's just as good live as he is in the studio!
Everything Elizabeth is saying about Powerwolf is spot on. You can't listen to Powerwolf without feeling just overwhelmed with the power. Powerwolf and Battle Beast would a phenomenal duo
I've seen Powerwolf live twice, and they're fantastic. Atilla's voice is amazing live.
Powerwolf is one of my favorite bands. These guys now how to make epic music. I love how big the sound is.
I saw (and heard) Powerwolf for the first time at Download festival in June last year... They were amazing
Rised from the little Saarland to conquer the world. :) Their concert in December in their "Hometown" Saarbrücken was amazing. Maybe as a result of this 2 year pandemic desaster, the crowd was so enthusiastic, the band showed so much passion and joy (ok i had to admit that they do it everytime). It was a great evening with some goosebombs (Where the wild wolves have gone) and a lot of headbanging. :) Can´t await July when they will return for an Open Air.
Sweet! A new band to me that's good. Thanks!

Hi !! Thanks for the analysis. It's always fun to watch you having so much fun listing to metal music. I recently rewatched your Lara Fabian's videos, and i think that you should listen to "Requiem pour un fou". I recommend you the live version of 1998 which is a duet between Lara and Johnny Hallyday. If you ever get the chance to see Powerwolf live, I highly recommend it. :) Been to two concerts and it was absolutely incredible. I would go again, if possible.
Karsten Brill aka "Attila Dom" is a powerful vocalist and suits this type of music perfectly. This truly is some fun music for the Charismatic Voice audience. Great choice and insightful commentary. Germany really does have some great rock music artists. For some reason, perhaps costumes, PW reminds me of Norway's Dimmu Borgir which is a symphonic black metal band that started same year as PW. Mr. Brill is indeed one of the most powerful vocalists in any musical genre.
I got into this band more and more over the last 12-18 months, and everything they release just blows my goddamn mind! Then I learned they're doing a very, VERY limited tour of 2 dates in Canada (Montreal) and US (NYC). It's roughly a 16-17 hour drive from where we live, we're making it down to NYC because there's no way in hell we're missing this, since it's the very first time they'll be playing in North America!
Where The Wild Wolves Have Gone and Sacramental Sister are more super duper uper great songs of theirs that I just love. The vocals on the chorus is just gorgeous. Atilla has a crazy powerful and mesmerizing voice. Major Edit: new favorite No Prayer At Midnight. Also a must
Wow I can tell you really enjoyed this
One of my favourite things about powerwolf is they feel tailor made to have on in the background while doing anything Warhammer 40K related.
Good band, good song, good analysis as always. My personal favourite from Powerwolf is Army of Night. Also if i may make two suggestions for you to listen to. One is Nita Strauss & Alissa White-Gluz - The wolf you feed, and the other is the song voted the best metal song of the year 2022, Arch Enemy - Handshake with hell.

Big fan from Australia! One artist I think youd really adore is lingua ignota, check out the song "do you doubt me traitor" for an incredibly first listen, it's dark, it's operatic, it's metal, it's haunting, it's beautiful. Trust me, you're missing out. Much love ❤
If Powerwolf should ever have a concert close to where you're living you should definitely go. They have such a great live performance and great crowd interaction. And somehow Attila manages to sound even better than on the records
Suggestion time! Red Handed Denial - “Father Said” (Lauren Babic live one take performance) Much more recent version of Lauren who can sing beautifully and scream with the best of them. The lyrics are very personal to her too and is worth listening for both her voice and the story.
