Power Mac G4: 7 Days of Suffering | G4 Adventures (PART 2)

Ғылым және технология

Cyb puts himself through PowerPC hell and attempts to use a hilariously obsolete Mac for a whole week; quickly realizing that it may be the second worst thing to come out of 2001.
In this video, we take a deeper dive into whether or not Apple's 22 year old flagship computer can handle some slightly more modern tasks and use cases.

Panther. Install Panther. We all bought new hardware when Tiger dropped. Also you can edit proxies and link back to whatever crazy format you had your original files in. We "printed" back to 2K files and they still look amazing today - albeit if they were film-scans to start with...

love these kinds of videos! Also, love your personality and editing style! I have a lot of vintage macs, but my 2006 iBook G4 14” 1.42GHz is actually surprisingly good at a lot of modern tasks. It runs minecraft smoothly, youtube works decent with a little bit of video skipping. It’s also been upgraded to 1.5GB of RAM. The extra CPU power and RAM will go a long way in making these machines somewhat usable

I have one of these w/ an old beige apple external mass storage HDD, a dual CPU G5 w/ a 20" cinema display, and my 1st personal computer... A RevB OG Bondi Blue iMac. They all reside in my apartment closet currently. I also have a 2008 iMac I actually use as a VST midi noise maker as well as a retro Nintendo (NES/SNES/N64) emulator. My current main audio workhorse is a 21.5" 2013 (i7-4770/GTX-750m/16gb/256 NVME/1tb SSD), that I pick up "parts only" for $50 local! Invested another $40 for parts and refurbished/upgraded myself. Wasn't the easiest endeavor I've embarked on mind you, but after a couple of days hunched over and swearing? I'm actually quite satisfied with it's capabilities. Great video series BTW. Cheers!

Awesome content man just watched both videos in this series! You should totally do more stuff around retro computers like this. Have you looked into things like OpenBSD or NetBSD they support SPARC and PowerPC 32 bit systems like this. Some Linux distros like Gentoo also support this hardware but take time to compile everything for the hardware but it should run smoother than anything else. It would be cool to see some content on that as well with these old machines since macOS is pretty much unusable for them these days. Keep up the good work

Yeah, I kind of figured it wouldn’t be fun. I not too long ago snagged a 2012 Mac Mini with 4GB of RAM off eBay…since that was the year they started saudering RAM to the motherboard I’m stuck with it. I figured it wouldn’t matter since it’s basically just going to be a dedicated HomeBridge server but even pulling up the site to download the software and some plugins took WAY longer than it needed to so I can only imagine your struggle. Thanks for the entertainment though.

Mainly due it only having a modem port. But, it ran Microsoft Excel and Word and .mp3s (for background music) perfectly fine.

Awesome video! I think you should get a MDD G4 or a Power Mac G5 next. I know you are short on room, but the G5 PowerPCs are nice! Or get one of the late model MDD G4s. The last model was a 1.25GHz which could also run Mac OS 9 still. It is much faster than yours, but still of the era, and can play games and work with other intensive things much better. Keep these kinds of vids coming!

I wonder if it would be better to use linux on such machine. If this machine was a G5 machine it would be easy to test because G5 is a 64-bit big-endian PowerPC CPU and several distributions support this architecture but G4 is a 32-bit PowerPC CPU and out of all major linux distributions only Gentoo seems to support it and installing Gentoo is a very tedious and intentionally very manual process.

You cannot expect to use the modern, ad and script riddled internet, on a 20 year old computer. I hate what the modern web has become. This isn’t the fault of the G4 which is plenty powerful to render HTML and CSS.

Around 2015, I tried using a iBook G4 as my main laptop for a little while. At the time, it was still kinda usable. TenFourFox was still updated (and Leopard WebKit was a lot faster, even if not as compatible), HTTP was still pretty common, HTTPS was still using TLS 1.0 or 1.1 pretty much everywhere and we had a lot of options to play KZread videos, the best one being YouView, but QuickTimeEnabler being also pretty good. Even for productivity, it was decent. Office 2009 and iWork 09 were still pretty recent, Audacity had just dropped support and had basically every features you needed, iMovie 06 was pretty good for basic video editing and if you were running Leopard, a lot of general software were supported on PPC until early 2010, so most programs you needed had no so old versions available. Years later, the situation is definitely very different and even with the best G5 Quad and 8 GB of RAM, you can't do much, at least on OS X, the software part is just too outdated and unlike XP, most people don't care, so there's not a whole lot of alternatives. Even in the Linux world, the situation is very different, most distributions still had PPC builds in 2015 (I still have the DVDs for multiple version of Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora, etc.), but today, I think you only have one or two options.
