Cyb does what he does best by taking on the pointless task of making a semi-ancient enthusiast computer useful in the modern age.
In this video, we take a look at one of Apple's flagship desktops from back in the day, the Power Mac G4, and try to get it running a little smoother in preparation for the task of a lifetime: using a 22 year old computer for a whole week.

Fun fact: the computer that is taped up with electric tape was actually my PC! I did it on purpose as a joke for a LAN party back in 2003/2004ish. It ran an AMD Athlon XP and Unreal Tournament! So funny seeing this picture again. It was literally my first profile pic on MySpace and then Facebook 😂

I have a 2004 G4 PowerMac, the dual-processor 1.25 GHz Mirrored Drive Doors model. Behind those two drive doors are a 12 X DL DVD burner (SuperDrive) and a CD-RW. I have given it 2 GB of RAM and all four drive bays are occupied. I have OS X 10.4 (incorporating OS 9 in the Classic environment) on one HDD, OS X 10.5.8 on another and the remaining two are concatenated to behave as a single drive and are used for an on-board Time Machine drive. Two of the expansion slots are fitted: one of 4 USB-2 ports and another featuring 2 more USB-2 ports and two FireWire 400 ports. This connects to a 20-inch Acrylic Cinema Display which incorporates two USB-2 ports in its rear. I use these ports for an external sound card and to connect the keyboard. The low power USB ports on the keyboard are used for a mouse and a Bluetooth dongle. Because of the fan noise, this model is also known as the Wind Tunnel.

I was looking into power Macs on KZread since I decided to pick one up for my upcoming birthday as tribute to my childhood in school (and wanting to run old software) and god already I’m in love with this channel and the cute art style, subscriber earned. Might eventually pull a druaga1 and throw an SSD into it, though for now I’ll use mechanical drives. Eventually I’ll probably make videos on my custom P4 machine and this.

The Power Mac G4 Sawtooth was the first computer I owned capable of running Mac OS X. It was an exciting time for computing. USB, dvi port / first time using LCDs, high speed cable internet connections. The first versions of OSX were quite slow with audio glitches and spinning beachballs but Apple improved this significantly in later versions. In the last 20 years I haven't had to worry about my macs crashing on me, MacOS 7/8/9 would crash once every 1-2 days. Great video!

Great vid - it made me chuckle. Hoping Part 2 is just around the corner? I'm currently in the same boat. I picked up a cheap but dead PowerMac G4 (AGP)... and I am trying to resurrect the poor thing. Watching this has probably saved me a few £$£$. No doubt I would've bought a few mistakes too!

Depends on the model. A dual 1.0 / 1.25 ghz can be quite useful. I have one ( an MDD ) that I upgraded the heck out of ( even a new PSU with a specially made adapter cable ).

Cool video. Looking forward to a new retro tech channel, subscribed! Side note: older machines who have wifi, typically cannot do modern wifi with modern encryption. To get around this, I have a second router plugged into my main router. On this second router, I set the wifi to no security, and do not broadcast the SSID. (I keep it hidden). The SSID I use for this router, which is used only for my retro PCs, is coincidentally, "retronet:". :)

G4 Adventures! Reminds me of a certain SSD enamored stoner's videos Also I really like your channel! Please keep posting! Too many retro channels kinda disappear after a few videos. Also I have one of these G4's they are pretty fun. Mine is a Mystic G4 with two dual CPUs (yes two physical CPUs on the same processor card) running at 450MHz. Here's some tips for what you wanna get for this machine SATA Cards! You can get that SSD running way faster using one of these and they are like 10 bucks. the main hurdle is getting a PC to flash with them with them but it sounds like you have that covered. USB 2 card (you absolutely want this don't get a VIA one. they don't work properly under Mac OS X) You can get even better cards for the G4 graphics wise. you can flash PC cards to work in these also of note is your monitor. ADC Adapters can be found on eBay to make them work with any DVI input. RAM get at least a gig you'll see why later Sorbet Leopard. Sorbet is leopard already made to work on lower end G4s and it runs great the aforementioned G4 Mystic (ie gigabit ethernet) runs sorbet with the stock Rage 128 Pro. Now the issue is that was only really usable after getting more RAM (mine goes up to 2GBs) You can run Sorbet Leopard fine with a low end G4 and 512MBs of RAM but with the a gigabyte it really sings. If you want to stay on Tiger check out Shuriken. It's a bunch of patches for Tiger that do a variety of things but namely for me updates certificates meaning you can go to more modern websites. ALSO: Macintosh Garden is your best friend for this machine. You absolutely want to use it.

What a unique style for retro computing videos! I love it. I recently got into collecting old macs to even out my collection of stupidly obsolete PCs. Have a 2009 Core 2 Duo Unibody Mac and a 2009 Core 2 Duo White MacBook. Currently rocking a 2015 i5 MacBook Air, old but gold. I'm tempted to get my hands on a G4 or G3 era Mac for fun. A little TLC and these computers are pretty amazing!

The crazy thing is a lot of Macs from those days still work perfectly fine! My daily driver is an '09 iMac 27" I got last year for $200, and I haven't had any issues with obsolescence or lag. I wanna get a 2012 MacBook Pro 15" unibody, I have the 13" which is equally great.

I liked the joke at the start, very funni :P I've got a G4 Digital Audio myself, I got it because SheepShaver wouldn't run the sound for certain Mac OS 9 games correctly. When I have the space to, I'll try to find an era-correct monitor and accessories for it.

that's a cute and well done video, congratulations for your format. Sometimes I'm tempted to get an old iMac between the Power Mac G4 and the iMac G4 just for the sake of having them and use them for whatever reason, but by thinking about having to check them inside to see if there's any dead iRoaches included I mostly pass, but hey, it will be interesting to see how your week went :b.

If you like Druaga1; you'd probably like his brother Shelby's channel Tech Tangents (formerly AbKuKu), which also covers so old stuff - albeit without the weed references and all of the SSDs. I have a bunch of old hardware to tinker with, but my biggest issue is not having the time to do anything with it. 😐 I should either sell my collection or put together a plan to actually do something with it. I have a lot of old Apple and IBM stuff right now.
