    My oldest is just about to turn 4 and he has been passionately against potty training, to the point where he cries whenever we mention the potty or getting rid of his diaper. Then last week he said he didn't want to wear a diaper anymore and walked into the bathroom. I took it off and he leaned in and started weeing. Now (other than when he's sleeping) he won't have anything to do with a diaper and has used the toilet every time. He even made it through a long car ride with no issues. Kids are wild, man.

My boy was showing readiness at 15 to 18 months, "pretend" wiping himself..but we were going through alot of changes and I chickened! Now he is 26 months old- he is ready because he knows what's toilet meant for, he knows difference between blue line/yellow line and even indicates when he wets the diaper. But he refusessssss to use the toilet. Even says "I don't like it". I've tried different configurations, followed everything from all your videos but I don't know what to do now. I am about to get into this phase but my son is a cardiac baby and still wears size 3 diapers. I tried finding a small potty but it is still too big for his tiny butt. Should I wait until he is 3 instead? He is really good at taking instructions and unfortunately with the constipation drama we have had in the past, sometimes he is most comfortable doing it lying on the change table if it is a lot. How do I transition now into training with such a tiny body that consumes a lot because of high calorie demands?

    I followed all of your tips on potty training my 17 month old and we are on day 3. I have been reading him the "Potty" book by Leslie Patricelli and he loves the book, he asks for it everytime we are at the toilet. What happened though that is quite funny is that he began saying "popo" for every bodily function that he has, whether it's pee, poo, burps, or farts. So everytime he says "popo" I run to the toilet to find out he just needed to burp lol.

    Man this is hard! My daughter is 18 mo. I started potty training her at 17 mo. She picked it up fairly easily, but it helped that she was regular so I could tell when it was time to go. She even got to the point of standing by the potty and saying poo to let me know. Then the flu bug hit my household and we didn't do much of anything. We got better but now it's like she forgot everything and is hiding sometimes to go now. I'm back in school and it's impossible to watch her how I want. It's discouraging. Thanks for the video!

    Do you think being in full time preschool or daycare delays the toilet training process? I work as a teaching assistant at a preschool in the two year old class and I only have 45 minutes to get 18 2 year olds through the morning bathroom routine. I feel like I'm on a racing pit crew. They're all in various stages of training. I'm always in a rush. I can't put them on the toilet unless I'm like 99% sure that they'll do something and most of the time I just end up putting on a diaper just because I don't have the time to make them sit. And they can't wear underwear unless we really think they're ready because I don't have time to be cleaning up accidents all the time. I don't think it's right. I wish I had either more time or less kids in my class. What do you think?

  • @adararelgnel2695

    @adararelgnel2695

    There should be FAR fewer children in your class. 2 year olds still need so much individual attention. From my moms experience with her preschoolers and my experience with my many children (many were babies and toddlers staying at home with me at once) I cant imagine doing more than 4 at any one time. They simply will not have enough care like that. I would never send my child somewhere where they would get neglected like this.

  • @EmmaHubbard

    It can be really tricky to do this. Some people find it is best to wait until the baby is a little older, because as you said it can be very challenging to be responsive to the toileting cues when you have a baby as well. When your bub is older, generally their routine becomes a bit more set and they can wait for a brief period while you help your toddler go to the toilet.

    Hi Emma, I love your videos, I’ve been watching them since my boy was a newborn. He’s now 16months and just recently starting crying as soon as I put him in the bath, he used to love bath time now its so traumatic for all of us. From what I’ve read this can happen between 1-2yrs old. I know its not related to this video but any advice would be so much appreciated! Cheers Penny

I know this is not ideal, but before he would cry not wanting to sit on the toilet, even though, I’m seeing all the other signs that he is ready for potty training. Letting him playing an educational game is a definitely no for the process?

  • @EmmaHubbard

    @EmmaHubbard

    Hi Holly! Staying dry overnight is a skill which can take a child a little longer to learn. In fact bedwetting is considered normal until the age of 6. Given it can take a little longer for a child to learn this skill I recommend letting them continue wearing a nappy overnight and during naps. What you will notice is your little one wakes with a dry nappy and at this point you can try removing it.

He also bends down when he needs to poo and does adult poos ( does not stain the diaper, poop is solid in a lump). In such a case how do you know whether he requires potty training? Confused about whether to look at milestones for 1 yr or for 2 because of his size and advance. Please help

    I want to talk about the underwear in the nappies part. I tried it as beforehand I was concerned that my twins aren't showing any signs at all that potty training was possible. Plus, my twins can't really talk and they just turned 2. So I wasn't sure if we would make any progress and I kinda want to get rid off changing nappies as it quite a hassle,they don't want us to change them. Well in just one day time session of saying your wet and we need to change your pants or your dry and good. One of the twins took off the nappy after he did some movement he also said the word wet which is new. The other twin didn't do anything like that. So it is possible that the kiddo can actually be ready and preventing a signs from going through. The health visitor mentioned it and I found this video to show my partner. Hopefully in a few days of doing this trick the other twin will start to show he is uncomfortable and we can bring in the potty for them both.

    Hi Emma! First, thank you for always producing such practical, logical, parenting guidance for your community. I've been watching your videos since I was 6 months pregnant and your channel is one of my go-tos for every new mom-question and milestone. A question for you after watching this video: I'm having trouble discerning if my 17mo old is "ready" or not for potty training. On the one hand: he's become very interested in the toilet and going to the bathroom in the last few weeks. He watches me and say "pee poo" while I sit on the toilet (he has very high verbal) and likes to flush it. He will also put one of his toys on the (closed) lid and say "pee", then flush when I say "all done." Yesterday, he climbed up to sit on the closed lid himself and said "pee". When I checked his diaper, it was wet. On the other hand: he doesn't always make it over an hour between wetting diapers. Sometimes only 45min. I also worry that at 17mo even the seat and wooden stools will be too small for him. In your view, do you think it's worth trying for potty training now? Or would you recommend waiting until he's closer to 2yrs despite all the interest and understanding he SEEMS to be showing at the moment? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

    So my 7 month old is already (in some ways) potty trained as he has already figured out what it feels like to need to pee/poop and can warn us about this when he is taking a bath or being dried off after as he will bring his hands down there, make a specific face and start to fuss... I will then rush to get his diaper on him and then after he will go in it. He also pees/poops when I tell him he is about to get a bath... he hates making his bathwater "dirty". He peed once when he was very young and he started to cry so we changed out the water and then he was happy again... he also as a newborn would lift his mouth to have it wiped off with the burp cloth after eating and now wipes his mouth himself after feeding. I don't think this is very normal but my mother says my sister was this way and had basically completely potty trained herself before one... with a child like this, when do you start potty training them?

    Is there anything we can do as occupational therapists to help w. constipation?

  • @EmmaHubbard

    @EmmaHubbard

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not really. We can help families set up an inviting bathroom and make sure the toilet set up is ideal (so the child’s knees are above their hips when they are sitting on the toilet). We can also help to identify strategies if sensory preferences are stopping a child from using the toilet which is leading to constipation. Also if the child is a picky eater due to sensory preferences we can also work on that. But otherwise I would encourage the family to link in with the GP and dietician regarding diet and medicine options to manage/resolve the constipation.

    Hello Emma! I started elimination communication (poop training only) with my son when he was 7 months. He seemed ready and was communicating with me whenever he needed to go. It was successful for months. Now he is 11 months and for some reason he refuses to poop on the toilet and prefers pooping in his diaper. He still communicates with me when he wants to go but AS HE IS POOPING. So I almost never make it to the potty in time. And I put him on the potty routinely but once I take him off, he’ll poop in his diaper. This is a major regression for us and I’m feeling so helpless. What should I do?

    It's likely because your son started becoming more mobile and with that babies commonly regress with their toileting. My son went 4 months (from 7-11mo) without a single poopy diaper and then he started cruising and started pooping in his diaper, at the same age that your son did. My son is now 20mo and has displayed the signs of readiness for a couple months now but still will poop in his diaper, same as how your son does. On occasion he will poop in the toilet. Not sure how to get out of this!

    It would be impossible for my little one to get changed after an accident in the toilet (bathroom is separate from the toilet) due to its tiny size. Even trying to do it in the bathroom would be tricky as it has about the same amount if floorspace (about 3 feet, with the door going inwards on both to further reduce the space). At best I can do in the doorway or either rooms.

    My girl is 2,5 years and doesn't show or say before she is weeing or pooing. I can't also tell when she does a wee and only notice when she is pooing when it's really obvious. She sometimes says she did a poo or wee afterwards, but also never really hides when she is doing it. She can also wee and poo when we tell her to use the potty before going to sleep or going out but she is not willing yet to give up her nappies. I think she loves the sweet attention she receives when getting changed. I think I will start to stop changing her on her baby changing table and throw the poo from a nappy into the toilet so she sees there is a change going to happen.
