My autistic daughter was 5 1/2 when she was potty trained. Game changer for her and us! It seems like the milestones get reached but with varying degrees of delay. I just love seeing her accomplish things, there is so much joy!

My son is so much like yours. I remember my husband and I, jumping around the bathroom and applauding when he did his first poo on the toilet. He was around 5. The look of delight on his face was enough to turn a heart to mush. Please don't think your world has ended if your child is diagnosed with autism. It's certainly a different world...but a marvellous one.

Milestones don't apply to autistic kiddos. 😄 My Seth wouldn't potty train, but he was waking up dry, and then, he would flood his diaper. I got tired of changing him and had a younger baby. So one morning, I had enough! I took off his diaper and just put sweatpants on him. .. In a little while, I was walking past the bathroom, and there he was, sitting on the toilet!!! .. I guess he knew the diapers would keep him dry, and the pants would be wet on him. So he went to the bathroom!!! Of course, he still wore diapers to bed for a while. And his little brother wet the bed a long time for some reason. ❤️ But Hallelujah, mine are ALL potty-trained now!

I’m so glad my kiddo wasn’t the only one he was almost 6 before he was fully potty trained, I used to get so much nag and hate because he was in pampers.

It’s interesting how it works on different people cause I was diagnosed with autism at 3 years old, though I was potty trained a few months before I turned 2. According to my parents, I was the easiest one to potty trained compared to my 2 neurotypical brothers. Though I didn’t speak till around roughly 4 and a half years old.

Those milestones are important as they allow us to see outliers as red flags to something else affecting the child’s development such As autism

the great grandmother keeps nagging about this...he is 4 and she gripes and asks all the time about him being in pull ups. I, the grandmom feel like telling her off...the granddaugher (mom) is sad about the remarks. He is autistic and mostly non-verbal too. Some people are so ignorant.

I'm sure you mean with an autistic child, right? And not just someone slightly autistic, I'm sure. My brother was nonverbal and had severe behavioral issues but we potty trained him by 2. I was 16 and fully involved in helping. I have 4 children, youngest is on the spectrum, and they were all potty trained early . At the very least they should definitely be done with diapers when they begin hiding to poop. They obviously know they need to go and so rather than hide, they should go to the potty.

She's talking about children who are AUTISTIC!!! do your research if you don't understand what it is and don't come here with your judgmental self when you obviously don't know anything about it and have never had to deal with it!!!

Yeah milestone is important. The world unfortunately isn't that kind for parents to always protect their children. If you child doesn't grow up to become a sensible child who can communicate and interact in the society (autistic or non autistic), then best of luck to the child.

You obviously don’t have a completely non verbal Autistic child. Your lack of empathy and actual blame you put on parents who give all they got everyday is pathetic.
