How I Found Out My Son Has Autism

This is one of the hardest videos I have had to film. I talk openly about autism diagnosis and the process we went through. Some words of wisdom on how I got through it. I am as honest and raw as I’ll ever be.

I am on the spectrum. I stim, there are lots of foods I can’t eat as well as fabrics I can’t touch or wear . I’m a terrible sleeper in facts it’s the hardest part of having autism for me( because when I’m tired my symptoms worsen). I get overwhelmed in stores and large crowds. With that being said there is hope . I am a productive member of society. I have a full time job , a house a car . And I have raised two amazing daughters. Diet for me is huge I’m a vegan and try to eat Whole Foods . My symptoms are lessened when I eat well and when I have a strict routine.

Shara cy I’m sure with you by his side he will flourish 🥰. The hardest thing about having mild “ symptoms “. Is that people don’t know how hard the person is working on the inside . So that way the world can perceive them as mild . I just want to show the world as well as new parents that hearing their child has autism isn’t the end of the world . I’m sure your son is amazing 😊 and having a label doesn’t change that .

@@kymrobinson9589 I cannot thank you enough. All medical professionals have told me no or he is in the mild to no signs group or his famous diagnosis of Devolpmental Delay (he has mild hearing loss as well). Though a part of me was always afraid of him having any disability, through people like you I know we are going to be ok. I always thought i dont want anything to be "wrong" but the truth is I dont want him to live his life pretending to be something he is not... so I embrace his quirks when possible, follow up with ALL appointments, check ups, reviews but most importantly we embrace a new way of life that fosters his learning pattern and ensure he is confident, independent and happy.

Thank you so much. I’ve been so overwhelmed lately cause doctors keep telling me everyone develops differently but there is a clear difference between a meltdown and a normal toddler tantrum and she turned two in July and still isn’t sleeping through the night. We struggle to go out to eat as a family and get so many looks when she gets over stimulated and we even try to go during the week when there aren’t many people there. This video has given me the strength to try again with her doctor cause they don’t see any of it. She has seen how frustrated people can get when she is overwhelmed and so in a new environment with different people around she doesn’t show her true self as much and then melts down when we get home she struggles with being in her car seat so we always have to keep toys and snacks in the car but we never know what is going to work on what day and don’t get me started on how hard the days are when our schedule is different. I have been trying to work with her and find what works for her but everyone around me keeps telling me to just discipline her and that I can “out last” her melt downs when I have to take what makes her comfortable like juice or milk at night without any guidance on how to replace that coping skill. Thank you so much for these videos they are really helping me to not feel like a failure as a mom so often ❤🙏🥹

It has been hard work but when I see how she is now at 31 I am so proud how she has coped along the way. She has a job, drives, and has many wonderful friends all with some form of learning difficulty, she could not cope with mainstream friends, her brain doesn't function the same way. I wish you and your lovely family all the best, all the hard work and perseverance will pay off.

I have never left a comment but this video compelled me to share a bit. Thank you so much for making this video! My 3 year old son was diagnosed ASD recently and tho I knew very early on, I’m still coping with my feelings and anxiety. I don’t always feel connected to him but I am searching for information and guidance to learn more. Again thank you for sharing your personal experience. A day like today where we barley got sleep and our morning was rough, and I dropped him off at preschool so I could sleep and cry alone; I am so grateful for the hope your video gave me.

I just want to say thank you to you and other mothers of autistic children sharing on this platform. Your experience is so similar to what we've been going through with my 3 year old. Even had his hearing checked. He's slowly using more words, but the tantrums have been out of this world since he was 2. I understand the pain you feel, because I feel it too. Ir's not their fault, or our faults, and we try to not compare. I am a preschool teacher and my son was in my class prior to quarantine. It was so hard seeing him unable to interact with peers, or engage in things as a class. But this video is reminding my that I am not alone. And that I am not at fault, autism happens to anyone. The hardest is seeing him hurt himself out of frustration, even at 18 months old to see a baby trying to bash their head into the wall, it's heartbreaking as a mother. Luckily we've worked through those intense emotions.

Hi, another fellow parent with very similar story. Thank you for sharing your experience, these types of videos are so helpful to new Autism parents, including myself 10 years ago! I too was determined to build a connection that was not coming typically with my son as well. Building a bond through play is about the best way to break into their world. For me, I just did what he liked with him, even if I thought it was silly. His stems, like running in circles, stacking items, and lining things up were the first ways, and it worked! Also, when be started speech therapy, I was always right there involved and continued it when the therapist wasn't there! God bless you and your family!

I have no words to express how grateful I am to you for that video... I'm waiting (for nearly a year now) to have my son assessed, he's 3yo, we know that he has language delay but there are some red flags for asd as well, so I'm grateful to learn as much as i can cuz I'm scared... not knowing what it means for him and quality of his life later is weighing on me :( and you are absolutely right about the family not getting it... sometimes they will brush off my worries and say that for sure all is going to be ok, he's just developing with his own pace, or act like I'm overprotective if I don't want to trick him in staying for sleepover... Thank you so much for sharing... I had tears in my eyes listening to you, i can so relate...

May Allah heal your son and bless and protect your whole family.

I'm a 45 year old man who was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome which has now turned into Autism Spectrum Disorder. Life has been extremely difficult and lonely but I'm now on a voyage of self discovery. Things were very different in the 1970's...no one had really heard of autism or were talking about it. Things may have been different if there was some early intervention then. Great video though and you're obviously a great mother.
