    After having worked for many years, raising a family, social commitments, involvement in all the “must do” things in life, I love it that I now have time to spend some time alone. Retired in Thailand is great and I feel privileged. Another great video. Thanks.

    For me it’s depressing to be a “senior” in the USA. It seems Gen X& Z hate the “Boomers” and you just as well be old wall paper in the room with no conversation with younger adults. People my age mostly watch Fox News, sit around talking about their ailments and what medication to use. The nightly TV News bombards the viewer with advertisements from pharmaceutical companies that makes one paranoid about their health. I love my retirement years in rural Thailand. I can enjoy my morning coffee with the sound of nature, work & create in my tropical garden and avoid the complainers. And the Thai culture respects their elders.

    Retirement in USA is fine if you can afford it, I spent 30 years building up a small ranch in mountains of northern Calif, only to be near burned out, while others were, and if you have a house your homeowners insurance went from $1,200 to $7K-$10kK a year. Plus good ole property tax s too, if you are on Social Security you’re screwed !!! …. Sold it !

    Isolation is the biggest price of living as an expat. I miss being around friends who laugh at my dry sense of humor. I miss being around friends who share my passions. My Thai boyfriend is with wonderful & smart, but he doesn't get my puns or share my interest in American politics, and I don't expect him to. Other retired expats seem to socialize in bars and I am not a heavy drinker, so I haven't made many friends there. (I also don't tolerate idiots well, which severely limits the candidate pool.)

    Great take, Steve. Over the decades, I have found that it is easier to occasionally find the company of quality people than it is to shake the constant company of difficult people. Not everybody likes themselves enough to be alone for long stretches, though. I feel genuinely sad for the people who find themselves in that situation.

    I have been in Thailand for 24 years and married a Thai woman. I am 66 years old and my Thai wife works all day and night(at a Japanese second-hand shop) and doesn't come home before 21:00 or later so I am alone a lot and like you say get stuck on youtube and stuff, oh well. I gave up beer 6 months ago with a fatty liver and no cig's and trying to eat healthy and a couple of raw garlic cloves a day and lemon water and other healthy things like food and vitamins. I don't get checked out at the hospital though I will one of these days. Since I drink coffee and green tea a lot I have to get up from my computer and take a piss that is my exercise but they say if you are at a desk job and you get up every hour or so and walk a bit it can keep you healthy, so who knows like your shows, Peace☮ p.s. Steve, I'm 61 and I had the same hernia as you in early 2021. I did it (I think) by running too much on the beach at Patong and carrying heavy bags of shopping! and they fixed it at the Mission Hospital (which is cheaper than the other ones) in Phuket. I think it was about 50,000. It was all done really quickly (unlike in the UK where you'd be on a waiting list for months because it's considered very non urgent) I stayed a night there in a nice room like a hotel. I was walking pretty slowly for about a week after, but back to almost normal within two weeks and running again in about 6 months.

    Hello Steve, new sub here. I had the same mate. Six months ago I got a hernia. I live in Hua Hin on less money than you, and still have a great life. I got mine done at the local government hospital. 25k Baht, in surgery a week after diagnosis and walking around the same day. No need for the expensive private hospitals unless you have insurance and like to be treated like a VIP. That's another cost of retiring. Sure, there is no AC in the ward, but the windows are open and they have a fan by the bed. Food was simple, but OK and I was told it would have been well over the 100k if I had gone to the Bangkok hospital chain. More like 300k by the time they had charged me for all the extras as they do. Good luck mate, enjoy your videos.

    Thanks 4 the show Steve, what you said about mex-food, a similar quest came along when I asked myself if I could find all of what's needed to cook "American Chinese Food". I live in Chaiyaphum. This challenge has been really bothering me because it's a challenge to match the labels or even find the same as the american-chinese-take-outs use. The entire subject is a weevil eating at my brain. That leads to a different search into "what sauces can be found that mimic what we enjoyed in the usa". Supper cheap eats here in deeper Thailand, but you likely have more available around Turtle Beach. I'm too high right now and gota go, but I just wanted to chime and agree that there's a sauce quest and food challenge to overcome here. Brisket... that came from Mexico to cook tough beef and we sure do have allot of that around here... Food is a challenge, but 7-11 is a life jacket.

    Great monologue as always. 1st takeaway: The Dr (Peter) put the mask on your face to shut you up...i think we have a name for the Grumpy Old Men turtle:) 2nd takeaway: You spoke of isolation as a cost of retirement. That is the one thing that scares me the most. Due to the pandemic and lockdowns and combined with my caregiving of mom, I feel like I have lost nearly all my friends here. I still have some that have been friends for decades, but i am a really shy person and I don't socialize easily. I realized one day that nearly all of my friends at that point in my life were made through my best friend. I had merely been absorbed into his circle of friends. Bar goers, mostly - not the ride or die types...but decent people. I fear I will turn into that "stay inside watching KZread all the time" person if I end up in Thailand. Lastly, maybe we loyal viewers can help mitigate that medical expense.

    3:57 Back in 1998 when I shattered the left side of my pelvis (acetabulum) in a boating accident and an amazing Stanford orthopedic surgeon put me back together so I can walk, I remember going in for a follow up visit at a Stanford clinic, and watching the process while I waited for my turn. Doctors would talk into a microcassette recorder after seeing a patient, then that microcassette would be removed from the recorder and scotch taped to a piece of paper and placed in a big stack of papers with microcassettes taped to them. Then a presumably erased microcassette would be inserted into the recorder for the next use. Little did I know someone like Steve was at the other end of that process. I wonder if they are still doing things that way?

  • @steverosse

    @steverosse

    Жыл бұрын

    No, sadly they are not. Now the docs either are required to fill out a form on a computer, checking boxes instead of actually composing their notes in prose, or else they speak into a microphone and voice recognition software composes the record. Either way mistakes happen and lives are lost. (The difference between "give Hans fifTEEN mg of Demerol" and "give Hans fifTY mg of Demerol" could kill a guy.) But it saves money, and everybody is in favor of smaller medical bills, so that's how it's done now.

How things come around I am in Chiang Mai and googled mexican restaurants yesterday, ended up going French was great but prices compared to local food was hard to take. That is the big thing for me I can get by with no social interaction or taliking to anybody (so far) but the food I can not give up western food so difficult for me to try new things. An interesting video about the cost of retiring abroad. The alone time is, however, something I look forward to when I become an e-x-p-a-t. I had surgery done in Thailand by a surgeon that also operated at Bumrungrad. My wife found an other and cheaper private hospital where he also worked. It was about half price. @@steverosse haha. I'll tell you something, Steve. The whole time I had the bump, I was sure I was going to get in an argument at some stage, and any blow to the groin area would have been disastrous. I actually signed on for, what we call here in South Africa, Medical Aid. It's basically private medical. Believe me, you don't want any medical procedure done on the State over here. So I signed up for it, then disclosed my pre-existing hernia, which means you have to wait for a year, then had the procedure. Keyhole surgery, quick and clean, home the next day. If I'd gone with the State, they probably would have chopped one of my nuts off instead of fixing the hernia - only half joking. Coincidentally, I got out of hospital the day before the Covid lockdown, and about 3 months after returning from my first visit to Thailand. Quite a busy period for me, unlike now - early retired.

    I'll try to remember next week to show the back. This building used to be a sushi restaurant. The back was a (slightly) landscaped garden. The shed was the laundry room and staff bathroom. I never use it for anything at all. It's full of geckos. I mean, like thousands of the little bastards. Khun Chamnan keeps the weeds down with the weed whacker, and takes home what little produce the plants produce. This year he's had two limes, a pineapple, and many bushels of "tamlung," a weed that apparently is boiled and served with rice and fish sauce. He hangs the laundry back there, and I moved the plants from the front of the house to the back for the monsoon. Other than that I usually forget it's there. The football field behind the house is used frequently for all knids of things. Some football games, but also seasonal festivals, parking for special events like the Bangkok Airways Half-Marathon which is this weekend, grazing cattle and goats, livestock shows, and even a Ferris Wheel during the Turtle Festival.
