POSITIONAL PLAY | Mini Course 1/8: Screw / Stun / Follow

Positional Play Mini Course 1/8:
In this over view of cue ball spin, we demonstrate the following:
• Screw back wash off
• Slow motion screw back
• Slow motion stop shot
• Slow motion drag shot
• Centre cue ball stop shots are impossible (most people think I am dead wrong on this one - but watch the video and you will agree with me!)
• Close up power follow (top spin)
• Close up power screw (backspin)
Let us know your thoughts…
PS the ‘Wagon Wheel effect’ explains why the cue ball when screwing back looked occasionally like it had top spin, and vice versa…

Beautiful Nic. Unfortunately here in Sri Lanka, we are having continuous lockdowns, not seen a snooker ball for ages, and cannot get back to Melbourne too. The slo mo videos are beautiful and educational. Unfortunately here it is we, the population who are being er..... forgive me :-((, screwed by the Government?? How are you gentlemen doing, I did watch, Boris trying to respond to his Booze party, faux pas :-)) poor guy, what else is one to do, after, work? Take care, Stay safe? BTW, Omicron, just landed in Sri Lanka too. Have you taken all your vaccines??

Nic. Say if we are potting a full length pot and want to stun the white, does -4 spin wash off more than -1 as the friction is greater? I’m my head I feel like a -1 shot played slightly firmer than a -4 would be more effective. When I’ve seen good club players play this shot - they never seem to hit low on the cue ball at all.

Thank you Darren. The issue is that most club players play that long straight stop shot with WAY more speed than they need because they are hitting much higher than they need. .

I worked with a top eight pro who was addressing (AND hitting) a stop shot from baulk to hold for pink in corner with -2 / -1.5. He was smashing the ball and missing accordingly (as he was playing on proper sized pockets, not the buckets that club players use which allows them to get away with these errors!).... Anyhow, we tested going down to -3 and the shot was so much calmer, slower, and quieter. -4 felt a bit soft for him so we kept it at -3. Another comparison is that I have never seen a club player hit that shot as softly, efficiently, and quietly as Ronnie would - because he hits low enough to float them in. Most club players who play this shot ADDRESS -1, but will HIT -3... it is PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAY THIS SHOT AT -1... which 90% of club players will disagree with (claiming me to be someone cuckoo - which they may be right about in some ways!)... however, if one put sheets of paper in front of the cue ball to force them to -1 and no lower they would agree within a few shots that it is indeed impossible. This could be worth a video in its own right in fact!.... Having said this, the LOWER you go, the HARDER you have to strike the cue ball to overcome the friction caused by extra backspin. This is a cost of doing business, though, and the rule is 'Lower & Slower' generally gives better results. Most club players would transform their game if they learned to play this shot -4 (which is sometimes needed anyway), and then they could make a conscious choice about whether to then play it 'Higher & Harder' for better results. This assumes of course that they hit where they address - and most club players dip on delivery as the subconscious knows their conscious height selection was wrong... so helps by dipping beyond their conscious awareness.
