Positional Play Mini Course 2/8: Does side spin affect the cue ball path?!...
In this demonstration of whether side spin affects the cue ball path (OR NOT!), we cover:
• Top priority - check where the cue ball hit the pocket
• Where do you think the cue ball will go with top spin and R4?
• It is very tough to pot centre pocket with side spin - which is my excuse in advance for not doing so!
• Where most players think the cue ball will go when this shot is played
• The three reasons the cue ball does not deflect from the object ball as much as most players think
• The lesson from this video has 50% importance weighting in positional play knowledge:
→ You can NOT deviate the cue ball from it’s path with side spin
→ If you have a straight pot just assume you are out of position and can only go backwards and forwards.

Thank you for the video Nic. Enjoy your analysis. Many years ago I took online coaching from you. Enjoyed my game even better since then. I observed that using side spin with stun or screw back might deviate the cue ball significantly from the straight path.

Thank you Ravi - yes I remember. Play centre cue ball whenever possible to keep the game simple!

The physic's answer is: It depends on your force hit and how slik is the cloth. I really respect your opinion, Nic, but saying it will go to a "specific" path without mentioning anything regarding the force of shot.. Thats weird. When you test spins for so long.. You come to realize that a player Basically needs to adjust his/her aim to the power intended in mind since every shot can be played an infinite number of ways. Slow shots casue the cueball to deflect more to the same side of our spin, and strong/fast shots will cause the cueball to deflect more to the opposite side of your spin. Tany side spin will *always* create an "arc", and sometimes it will deflect in such way that the arc will be in a perfect shape, thus causing the cueball to squirt and swerve back to the point you aimed as if the shot was perfectly straight. Of course, if you speak about a world with no squirts and swerves (the arc always being created by the squirt first, and the swerve right after..) and you want to explain why the object ball deflects to any opposite side the moment it is being hit by the cueball, then you need to elaborate more on friction between the balls, and the "gear wheel effect" at contact point and time.

Yes Levy it goes without saying that speed has an effect - although this video is covering basic principles only. If I keep adding caveats to videos they would be too long and not remain simple / high level. Yes the cue ball turns of course, but the fact remains that on this straight pot the cue ball follows the object ball into the pocket even with maximum english.

Nice one! I never knew that about the effect with top and side. Will remember that when I return to playing again👍

@@TheSnookerGym Been away from it for over a year now. A gradual decline in interest and then the club closing due to COVID didn't help. Can't say I've really missed it and it would be a lot of hard work to get back to a decent standard. One thing may draw me back though and that is to try out a titanium ferrule. From what I've heard it makes things a little easier with much less deflection, something that was really holding me back in recent years.

@@bottlecap57 It looks like Nic has a blackspin ferrule fitted on his cue that is very similar to the titanium. I have a blackspin and the deflection is very minimal which is much easier when playing with side. Hope you get back to playing mate 👍

Try it but it is not the be all and end all - go to Go Customs in Holland and test their carbon cue - THAT is low deflection to the next level!

Hi Nic, I thought the cue ball might have gone very VERY slightly to the left of the pocket (as you looked at it) due to your right spin 'squirting' or deflecting the cue ball to the left of the object ball and then following on to hit left of the pocket??

Thank you Mark. Depending on cloth age and speed etc the side spin can turn the cue ball slightly (like a micro swerve shot), but I have found it to be impossible to pot on object ball centre pocket on a straight pot awith top spin and for the cue ball to NOT go in off virtually dead centre pocket. I should offer a challenge to anyone who can do it! The point of the video is to get people off the notion that they can control / change / adjust the cue ball path with side spin before it hits a cushion... they are then liberated to just go up and down the central cue ball height line only to control its direction. 99% of club players fail to do this, and suffer considerably as a result in terms of not being able to play near their potential as they are making it so complicated...

@@TheSnookerGym Yes fair point! Side spin opens up so many avenues of confusion, but yes, the path of the cue ball after contact with object ball can only be influenced by the height the cue ball is struck! Love you vids - hoping to get to see you one of these days. Where are you again? Milton Keynes?

@@markgilmore2077 Thank you Mark. Yes in fact as the cue ball moves across the cloth with side spin, it will turn slightly... but to a microscopic degree. So side WILL make a 1% difference to the cue ball path - but effectively it is zero. What players of 40-70 break standard fail to account for when trying to utilise this 1% is the difficulty cost of applying all that side - it would be like paying £99 for a £1 coin. If I was playing that red in the middle 100 times with maximum side, I would expect to hit to within 3mm of centre pocket maximum 5 times out of 100... but with centre cue ball I would expect to hit with that accuracy 30+/100 times.
