Learn how Artist WELZIE colors in his artwork with his POSCA PAINT PENS. This video is part of Welzie's ART BOX TUTORIAL SERIES. Follow WELZIE along his process of creating fun art projects for all ages.
Welzie’s artwork is shown throughout the Hawaiian Islands. He gained a grassroots following for his artwork when he started the popular Hawaii longboard brand Two Crows Surfboards. His unique approach to colors and the resin and fiberglass medium grabbed peoples attention.
Growing up Welzie was always making art inspired by his father who was a graphic designer. Going to UH Manoa Welzie studied art all while surfing and building boards and doing art on them for all the famous surfers on Oahu’s famous North Shore.
While making surfboards in his surfboard factory and spending less time in his studio painting acrylic on canvas, Welzie turned to fiberglass and resin as his medium to pursue his creative endeavorers.
Welzie’s work is collected and loved by people all over the world. His signature Art Gallery is at the Andaz Wailea on Maui where he is their Artist in Residence.

Fantastic little workshop. Totally get your instructional style which makes it clear. How easy is Posca to use in a temporary way on windows Welzie? Would it be easily removable? Am also wondering how good it might look from the inside of the window if you've drawn outside the windows. And... last question honest... how do they stand up to our British rainy cold weather? :) Thanks. Am enjoying watching these!

Posca does work on windows but they do scratch off really easy. It is definitely a more temporary solution than using oil based pens. But at least the acrylic will come off a little easier. As far as the weather I can only guess that the paint pens won’t last as long than say using normal acrylic paint. It’s all sunshine and rainbows out here in Hawaii. Good luck, have fun and stay inspired 🤙🏼

Great vid. Super helpful man. Quick question, and probably obvious, is it okay to use traditional acrylics either under or over the Poscas?

Thanks! Yes you can definitely use acrylic over or under posca paint pens. The only trouble you get in is when you use acrylic over oil base. Have fun! 🤙🏼

Nice demo. I must try these pens. What size pens are you using PC-3M or PC-5M?

Thanks! I use mostly the PC-5m. They are great because you can do almost every size line with them and smaller detailed work. I think the pc 3m is too close to the 5m to warrant getting both sizes. I use the pc 1m for all detailed work and cleaning up lines on the bigger pen tips. Some people like the 8k for larger areas but I like the 17k. It has a ton of ink and the pen tip can be turned on the side to archive same size lines as the 8k. Great question. Hope this helps. Any questions you have just ask. Aloha

Oil based paint pens work great but posca pens do too. Posca pens will be easier to scratch off than oil but they do work. I have a video about oil Vs acrylic paint pens and a video about drawing on glass as well

Is there a reason you don't pencil the outline, add fill colour and then outline last?

  • @WelzieArt

Generally I do the outline of the sketch, then fill in colors. Then go back over the outline with the sharper pen to make the black outline over the full areas. Does that make sense? I haven’t watched this video in a while. If this response wasn’t what you are wondering let me know and I can try again 😁🤙🏼

I do my illustrations with posca pens on a resin panel. These panels are made with wood, covers in a layer of fiberglass with white pigmented resin. Then i paint abstract over the fiberglass with pigmented resins. This then gets a clear layer of resin which gets sanded to 320 grt. This is a perfect surface for drawing paint pens on. We do sell art boxes that include.my favorite posca colors and a resin panel painted by me. Welzie-are.com

I guess you cannot do gradients on graph paper, I assume your board you're using you primed it with gesso?

  • @WelzieArt

I use resin panels I make. You can do gradients but on paper the paint will have to dry before adding the next color

@@WelzieArt, thank you although I do not see how to make the gradients with dried paint though.

@ravenshadowz2343 I’m not sure what video it’s in. It’s only a short little description. You can do wet into wet or what I prefer do one color. Let dry. Then do the next color and use dots or lines for the gradient.
