I know I've said this before but I'm gonna say it again anyway. The way you block out colors and then slowly blend them into a soft but richly layered piece is just so wonderful to watch.

I’ve had this set for two years and it’s still moist like the day I got it. One time I didn’t use it for months and some paints dried up so much (black and Indian red and others) so I poured water in them to fill up the cubes and closed it for four days. Then I opened it and mixed them each and they were full again and brand new. I’m guessing the water evaporated over time but nothing else did

When I use gouache I start with a layer of watercolor underneath to block out the shapes. I think it gives a nice blended look and it’s easier to apply over watercolor than using just the gouache! I hope this helps! Your art is amazing!✨💖

Thank you for sharing your insights. I have just started using gouache. I used to use acrylics so I’ve come from the opposite end of the spectrum from you, give you’ve moved from watercolours. I would say gouache is MUCH harder to use than acrylics. Particularly struggling like you were with the paint lifting problems. When I used acrylic I used to just have the luxury of going over and over a painting and all my mistakes until I was happy. With gouache this is not really so easy to take this approach. Having said that, I think changing mediums pushes you outside your comfort zone which is a great way to explore new techniques and really stimulates creativity when all is said and done. Look forward to seeing more of your tutorials. This is a beautiful portrait you have completed!

Hello! Loved the painting, I have the same gouache palette. I found that once they have dried, you can spray the paints with water and let them soak for a day or 2. After some time, the paints get soft and you can mix them with a palette knife. It reconstitutes the paint and brings it back to that creamy texture it originally came in :-)

Agree 100% with your opinions 😭 watercolor is my basic, when i use gouache and I uh its kinda hard. I learn that jelly gouache underneath (or all kind of gouache) will melt when we apply new layer. So 2-3 layers is maximum.. this is why in my opinion gouache is more hard to learn than watercolor cs i really used to layering my paint a lot 😂

Yeah, I find that gouache works best opaque. Yes you can water it down and paint many layers but for that purpose I would use watercolour as it spreads well. Gouache could always be added on por a final opaque layer on top of watercolour.

FINALLY SOMEONE WHO... struggles for the same reason... The getting-the-flat-wash part always caught me off-guard, and was the source of so much frustration... Part of what I like about watercolors was also layering very light washes to build up colors. (narrator voice) It did not go well in gouache. Using your fingertips to blend made me chuckle-- mostly because that is a mood. In the end, trying to tackle it like I'm doing digital painting worked better for me. At the very least, I'm a lot less frustrated! Your art is gorgeous and I've loved everything you've drawn so far, but in this one I'm just in love with the sketch and can't stop staring at her eyes at the end-- so wonderfully expressive. The finished piece looks gorgeous, I'm fascinated by how you painted the area that's uh, connecting the bridge of the nose and the cheek, it's really beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this video with us! Especially given the frustration you've had during parts of the painting process.
